Montreal and provincial police have made several arrests Thursday morning targeting the Rizzuto family in the Montreal area, Radio-Canada is reporting.
The major police operation aims to end the activities of what was once the most influential and dangerous criminal organization in Canada, led by the late Mafia leader Vito Rizzuto.
About a dozen people were targeted by the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal and the Sûreté du Québec, according to Radio-Canada sources.

Ontario's police watchdog says just before 1 a.m. staff at a bar on Lakeshore Boulevard East called authorities after a male allegedly assaulted a staff member then ran away. Officers from Peel Regional Police were dispatched to the area and found the suspect nearby. The civilian agency says he fled onto the roadway at Lakeshore Road East and Helene Street where he was hit by the driver of a vehicle, who then took off. The teen was subsequently arrested and taken to the hospital where he remains in non-life-threatening condition. At this time, three investigators and a forensic investigator have been assigned to the case. A 31-year-old Limoges man and a 39-year-old Swastika woman were arrested Sunday after police found $75,000 worth of suspected fentanyl, cocaine, meth and ketamine in their car. The driver also had a suspended licence. Both were held pending a court appearance. A routine traffic stop by the Ontario Provincial Police in Kirkland Lake led to the seizure of suspected drugs with an estimated street value of more than $75,000. At about 3:40 p.m. on July 13, officers pulled over a vehicle on Prospect Avenue after discovering the driver had a suspended licence. The driver was arrested without incident during the stop. Authorities estimated the street value of the suspected drugs alone to be more than $75,000. Two facing multiple charges A 31-year-old man from Limoges, Ont., and a 39-year-old woman from Swastika, Ont., were each charged with four counts of drug trafficking. The man faces additional charges, including drug possession, possession of the proceeds of crime and driving with cannabis readily available along with the initial charge of driving while under suspension. The woman was also charged with disobeying a court order. The man accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 21 – while the woman was remanded into custody and is set to appear in court on July 18.

According to a release from the Surrey Police Service, officers were called to the area of 152 Street and 96 Avenue for reports of shots fired shortly after 11 a.m. Police arrived to find 'numerous shell casings', but no one was injured during the incident, the SPS said. The RCMP's SPOSU General Investigation Unit have been called in to assist with the investigation.
