2 men killed in boating accident in Sturgeon Lake: OPP
Two men are dead following a boating accident in the Kawartha Lakes region on Sunday afternoon.
The incident happened on Sturgeon Lake, which is roughly 155 kilometres northeast of Toronto.
Emergency responders were called to that area shortly after 3 p.m. after receiving reports of a canoe carrying three males that had capsized.
In a news release, the OPP's Kawartha Lakes Detachment said one of the males was able to make his way to the shore, however two others were 'unable to remain afloat and succumbed to their injuries.'
They added that there were no life jackets in the boat.
The local OPP, including its Marine Unit, along with City of Kawartha Lakes Fire and EMS, and the OPP's Aviation team were involved in the lifesaving and recovery efforts.
'With capsized vessels and falling overboard the top contributing factors in boating deaths every year, a significant number of lives stand to be saved if boaters, personal watercraft users and paddlers wore a lifejacket or personal floatation device,' said the OPP, which patrols more than 110,000 square kilometres of Ontario's waterways.

Three northern Ont. men fined for illegal moose hunting

Guilty pleas and fines Peter Berardi pleaded guilty to failing to immediately invalidate his moose tag and was fined $3,000, along with an additional $1,000 for possessing illegally killed wildlife. Thomas Tronsen admitted to unlawfully invalidating his moose tag on an animal killed by another person and received identical fines. Alan Tronsen was fined $1,000 for possessing illegally killed wildlife. The incident Court documents revealed that on October 28, 2023, Berardi harvested a bull moose in Wildlife Management Unit 15B near Graham Road under the authority of his bull moose tag. Instead of invalidating his tag immediately, he contacted Thomas and Alan Tronsen, who were in Thunder Bay – roughly 160 kilometres away. The two men traveled to the site and invalidated Thomas Tronsen's tag on the moose, allowing Berardi to retain his tag for further hunting. The animal was later transported to a Thunder Bay residence and divided among the three men. The investigation Conservation officers launched an investigation after the 2023 hunting season, leading to the seizure of the moose meat and charges. The ministry emphasized that hunters must follow party hunting regulations, including invalidating tags immediately at the time and location of harvest. Two people hurt in Waterloo stabbing

According to a post on social media, it happened near King Street and Princess Street early Sunday morning. Two people were taken to hospital with unspecified injuries. Police said they believe the stabbing was a targeted incident. They did not share any further details about a suspect, arrest or any possible charges. 3 charged with second degree murder following northwestern Ont. weekend homicide

Police respond to weapons call The Thunder Bay Police Service responded to a weapons call in the 200 block of Pearl Street in the early morning hours of July 19. Officers located an adult male victim at the scene. The victim, identified as 32-year-old Allan Faykes, was transported to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Earlier warning to public Before midday on Saturday, investigators had issued a public warning that a homicide suspect was at large and possibly armed. However, they assured the public that the victim and suspect were believed to be known to each other, adding there was 'minimal threat to public safety.'
