'Fantastic Four: First Steps' earns $57 million opening day, ranking second-highest debut of 2025

Fantastic Four: First Steps opened to an estimated $57 million in the United States on Friday, including preview screenings, making it the second-largest opening day of the year. The figure puts the Marvel Cinematic Universe entry just behind A Minecraft Movie, which earned $57.11 million on its opening day. According to Disney, the film, which plays in IMAX and other premium formats, slightly outperformed DC Studios' Superman, which opened to $56.1 million earlier this month. Industry analysts suggest it may be a close competition as Fantastic Four aims to surpass Superman's projected $125 million three-day debut. Directed by Matt Shakman, the film introduces new MCU cast members Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. The narrative functions largely outside the core MCU storylines, offering a standalone experience for audiences. Early feedback has been favourable, with CinemaScore reporting an 'A-' rating from opening-day ticket buyers. The $200 million production is Marvel's third release of the year. Its predecessors, Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts, opened with $88.5 million and $76 million, respectively, but did not achieve box office profitability. Fantastic Four: First Steps represents Marvel's latest effort to revive legacy IPs acquired through Disney's 2019 purchase of 20th Century Fox. The studio is expected to pause superhero film releases until Avengers: Doomsday in December 2026, following Sony's release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day in mid-2026.

‘Predator: Badlands' propels predator perspective at Comic-Con

SAN DIEGO: The latest movie in the 'Predator' series flips the script to focus on the bad guys who always lose to the humans in the end, director Dan Trachtenberg said on Friday. 'The predator never wins,' Trachtenberg told an audience at San Diego Comic-Con after footage of 'Predator: Badlands' debuted at the convention's Disney panel. This, the 'Prey' director said, inspired him to tell the story from the predator species perspective in 'Badlands,' the seventh in the main movie series, dating back to the 1987 hit starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the ninth across the franchise. It was key, Trachtenberg said, for him to explore a different aspect of the 'Predator' world for this science fiction movie, developed by 20th Century Studios and landing in theaters on November 7. 'There are no humans in this film,' said cast member Elle Fanning, discussing the challenges of learning the logistics of a completely fictional realm. 'Project Hail Mary' sends Ryan Gosling, and Comic-Con, into outer space The biggest challenge was mastering the fictional Yautja language, said Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi, who stars as Dek, a young predator on a solo mission in a treacherous land of even bigger predators. He bonds with an android named Thia, played by Fanning. Dek is 'ferocious and badass, very much an anti-hero,' Trachtenberg said. Before the panel discussion with the director and several cast members, the audience got a glimpse of a Yautja-speaking predator prowling the stage with the signature glowing weaponry as stirring music played.

Rachel Zegler leaves Evita stage mid-show after falling ill

Rachel Zegler, currently starring in Evita at London's West End Palladium, abruptly exited Thursday evening's performance due to illness, according to People. The 24-year-old actress had performed the matinee earlier that day but was unable to continue the night show. During intermission, the production announced Zegler's departure, and understudy Bella Brown took over the lead role of Eva Perón for the second act. Brown opened the act with the show's most iconic number, 'Don't Cry for Me Argentina,' and delivered a performance that earned her a standing ovation lasting nearly five minutes. She and the cast returned for 10 curtain calls. Sharing her thoughts on Instagram, Brown praised understudies and stand-ins, saying, 'They are pillars of a show!' She later called the experience 'a proud day to be at Evita.' -Instagram. Zegler's absence comes amid a headline-making run of the Jamie Lloyd-directed production, which opened in June and continues through September 6. While many have praised Zegler's West End debut, the staging choice for her performance of 'Don't Cry for Me Argentina' — sung from a balcony outside the theatre while audiences inside watch via livestream — sparked controversy. Some ticketholders expressed frustration on social media, questioning the value of the experience. Others defended the choice, viewing it as a poignant symbol of accessibility for those unable to afford theatre admission. The role is a personal milestone for Zegler, who previously shared that Evita had deep meaning to her and her father. 'The stage has always felt like home to me,' she told Deadline in March. Zegler's off-stage life has also drawn attention recently. She was seen with dancer Nathan Louis-Fernand at a Sabrina Carpenter concert in July, following reports of her split from actor Josh Andrés Rivera. Her latest role follows a tumultuous year, including public backlash over her comments during Disney's Snow White press tour and the film's poor box office performance.
