British Trad Wife Charlie Gray says women thank her for giving them 'permission to be at home'

Daily Mail21-05-2025
A British Trad Wife says that people have thanked her for 'giving them permission' to be a stay-at-home parent.
Charlie Gray, 42, who lives in a large house in the West Sussex countryside, regularly posts her tips on homemaking on her @ askcharliehow Instagram and YouTube pages and says she is proud to be a traditional housewife.
A growing number of women particularly in the US and increasingly the UK, are calling themselves Trad Wives - rejecting the feminist plight in the hopes of championing traditional feminine roles of looking after the home and keeping out of work.
Speaking to Woman's Hour presenter Nuala McGovern on Tuesday, Charlie, who runs cookery courses on making dishes such as sourdough and foraged wild nettle pasta, says she hasn't encountered any negativity about not having a formal job.
When McGovern suggested to the mother of three teenagers that the content she makes might be 'setting women back', Gray responded: 'I've just had people saying "thank you for giving me permission to be able to stay at home and not feel the pressure to go back to work"'.
The influencer, who has more than 34,000 followers on Instagram, is married to husband Simon, 18 years her senior, whom she met while working as a secretary - she described him in an interview with The Telegraph last month as 'the most wonderful man I've ever met'.
His career, running a successful seafood business has meant she is able to stay at home and care for the couple's children, Archie, Coco and Gus.
Gray told Woman's Hour that she spotted the need for her housewifery tips after realising that homemaking skills hadn't been passed down - after she ended up teaching the family au pair basic cooking skills.
She said: 'We had au pairs for our children. We had three children under the age of two, and it was crazy so we enlisted an au pair to come and help, and she couldn't even boil an egg.
'So then I found myself with an extra child to teach how to do these things.
'And that's when I realised that practical skills haven't been passed down through the generations like they used to be.'
The Trad Wife added: 'Running a home and being a housewife is a very, very busy important role if a wife or husband chooses to do that, and I'm sharing these tips to make life easier.'
Reactions to the YouTuber's appearance on the BBC Radio 4 show were mixed, with many suggesting that her social media work is a job, saying: 'All power to her and she looks really interesting and with a clear style but she isn't a "trad wife", she's a successful businesswomen with an interesting premise.'
Others agreed that vital practical skills have been lost, with one writing: 'Learning to cook for yourself and run a house is a skill every adult should have housewife or not, I don't think this is controversial. Why are people upset she's teaching people how to bake bread?'
Another recounted how she'd cared for her children but faced criticism for the decision, saying: 'I stayed at home with my three children and honestly loved every minute; the backlash from other parents however was not pleasant, but it mostly stemmed from they thought I was rich enough not to work, which wasn't true.'
Last week, the most famous Trad Wife of them all, Nara Smith, was criticised by some for glamourising teen pregnancy after posting a controversial TikTok.
The 23-year-old, who shares three children with husband Lucky Blue, posted a video celebrating being a young mother.
The clip, which showed her hugging her young child in a paddock, was captioned: 'POV: You decided to have kids at 18 and this is your fifth Mother's Day.'
Nara rose to fame through TikTok, where she flaunts her 'tradwife' (traditional housewife) lifestyle, baking extravagant meals for her family while seeming to effortlessly care for her young children.
While her social media shows a lavish lifestyle, where she wears designer clothing in a beautiful home, many have pointed out very few teen moms can afford the same lifestyle.
'Nara please don't glamorize this. Happy for you but your life at 18 is not most teens realities…,' one response read.
'Reminder to all the 18-year-olds, you do not have Nara Smith money,' read another.
'Girlies at 18 you don't have Nara Smith money so this ain't your sign,' someone else shared.
'No. DO NOT GET INFLUENCED PLEASE. Finish your college. Get a job. Become financially stable,' agreed another.

Jessie J 'set for huge TV comeback' following successful mastectomy amid breast cancer diagnosis

Jessie J is reportedly planning to mark her TV comeback with a special appearance on Strictly Come Dancing this September following her mastectomy. The singer, 37, had surgery two weeks ago and confirmed to her fans that 'no cancer spread', after revealing she had been diagnosed with breast cancer in June. According to The Sun, BBC bosses believe she will kick off the new series perfectly as they welcome her return. A source said: 'Jessie is putting her health and recovery first but is already excited for getting back on stage. 'She's been booked for a TV comeback on Strictly in September and bosses can't wait to have her on the show. 'Right now she's feeling very grateful for life and all the opportunities coming her way.' MailOnline has contacted Strictly and Jessie J's representatives for comment. As well as the reported Strictly appearance, Jessie is also booked to perform at Radio 2 In The Park in September in Chelmsford. Earlier this month, Jessie shared an adorable clip of her two-year-old son Sky the night before the operation. In the sweet clip, Jessie is heard encouraging her boy to say 'Mummy's going to be okay' as she prepared for the surgery to remove her breast. In the caption, she penned: 'AND.. I AM OK. Results = I have NO cancer spread. Happy tears are real', followed by several crying emojis. The Price Tag hitmaker continued: 'Thank YOU for the prayers, the love, the well wishes, the joy and all the positive energy. 'This video is from the night before my surgery. We called it baby boy. You are my biggest ray of light and with you in my life, the darkness will never win. 'Lots of healing to go and one more surgery to make these cousins look more like sisters, but for now it's gratitude time and I am changing my name to The LopJess monster.' It comes after Jessie revealed she wished she said goodbye to her breast before undergoing a mastectomy. In an update last month, she said that she is experiencing some 'delayed sadness' and felt 'disappointed' that she didn't say goodbye. Taking to her Instagram stories, she shared a candid post with fans, bravely opening up about her feelings. The performer admitted that she went into 'survival mode' when she first found out about her diagnosis and is now letting herself be angry and sad. In her post, Jessie wrote: '2 weeks post surgery. Had my drain out 2 nights ago. She said breathe in and take a hard breathe out. She whipped that thang out so quick. Woii oii. Weirdest feeling. But so nice to have it out after 12 days. 'Now it's just me and my wonky boobs trying to figure out how to dress until I match them up. The left one is looking at me like "you ok babe?"' She continued: 'Also my experience was when I was diagnosed I went into survival mode. 'There was so much going on with appointments and in my mind esp with a toddler I had just moved and was about to start this campaign after 8 years away. Mad. In the caption, she penned: 'AND.. I AM OK. Results = I have NO cancer spread. Happy tears are real', followed by several crying emojis 'I didn't really have a lot of time to process what was happening or what was going to happen. So I'm currently experiencing some delayed sadness and frustration by having time to process what IS happening. Jessie added: 'A little disappointed in myself I didn't say goodbye to my old boob enough. Sounds silly but that's where I'm at. Again that's my journey. I'm sure others feel different. 'But for me I didn't think beyond the surgery. I was just being strong. Well now I'm here and letting myself be angry and sad and all the things. Just for a few days. 'Then I will sew some padding in a bra to even them out order some t-shirts and crack tf on'.

'Downton Abbey cast to reunite for emotional "farewell" documentary after final film - but one major change is set to leave fans furious'

The Downton Abbey cast are reportedly set to reunite for an emotional 'farewell' documentary following the release of the third and final movie - but one major change is set to leave fans furious. To mark the grand finale, the cast will come together for a glossy new documentary titled Farewell Downton Abbey, according to The Sun. However, in a major blow to the millions who originally tuned in on ITV, the swan song is expected to land on a streaming platform - shutting out fans without a subscription. A TV insider told the publication: 'This will be bittersweet news for all the people who would be thrilled at the prospect of seeing all the stars of Downton Abbey coming together one last time. 'Because it means there's likely to be a bidding war between the streamers to get this, probably Netflix, who currently show all the TV episodes, and Prime Video, who have the first two movies. 'With the release of the third film it's 'Goodbye Downton Abbey'. But not everyone is going to be able to take part in that, as only those who have the right subscription will be able to see it.' MailOnline has contacted ITV for comment. The news comes after it was confirmed last year that creator Julian Fellowes and his team were working on Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. The third and final film will see the return of Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern as the Earl and Countess of Grantham. As well as Michelle Dockery as Lady Mary Crawley and Jim Carter as Mr Carson - some of the beloved stars who rose to fame when the original series aired from 2010 to 2015. The upcoming movie will hit cinemas on September 12, and the documentary, produced by British company Monkey Kingdom, is expected to drop around the same time. It's said to include behind-the-scenes footage, cast interviews, and emotional tributes from fans reflecting on the show's enduring legacy. The latest news follows the release of the brand new trailer for the final film - which left fans in tears and teased a major scandal involving Lady Mary. In the three-minute clip, Robert Crawley prepares to hand over his duties as head of the household to his daughter Mary. However, her plans to become her father's successor are thrown into jeopardy when news of her divorce reaches the newspapers. Set in the 1930s and written by Julian, the final chapter is directed by BAFTA and Emmy nominee Simon Curtis, who also helmed 2022's Downton Abbey: A New Era. Alongside returning favourites like Hugh, Jim, Joanne Froggatt, Laura Carmichael, and Michelle, new faces Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale, and Arty Froushan will also join the cast. The trailer ends on an emotional high, as Lady Mary declares: 'Long live Downton Abbey.' Downton Abbey is available for streaming on several platforms including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and ITVX Premium.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that Lily Samson doesn't like...

What Book... ...are you reading now? I am enjoying a biography of Alfred Hitchcock – The Dark Side Of Genius, by Donald Spoto. It has taught me a lot about my favourite director and how I can learn from him to be a better writer. I was interested to discover that, aged 16, Hitchcock fell in love with reading Edgar Allan Poe, feeling that his films were comparable to Poe's novels as 'a completely unbelievable story told to the readers with such spellbinding logic that you get the impression that the same thing could happen to you tomorrow'. ..would you take to a desert island? My favourite thriller writer is Patricia Highsmith and my favourite Highsmith is The Cry Of The Owl, which I rate even more highly than her Ripley novels. Highsmith loved exploring twisted duos, her most famous being the men who make a pact to murder each other's wives in Strangers On A Train. In The Cry Of The Owl, the protagonists are a stalker and a person being stalked, but they end up reversing their roles. ...gave you the reading bug? Danny The Champion Of The World, by Roald Dahl. I grew up in a family on benefits and attended a middle-class school. I felt out of place, but a teacher there nurtured me, telling me I was going to be a published writer when I grew up, and giving my seven-year-old self hope! He introduced me to Dahl when he lent me his battered copy of Danny The Champion Of The World. The touching relationship between the book's widowed father and his son spoke to me, given that my father was ill and emotionally absent. Dahl sometimes gets misjudged for being a cruel author, there is also great tenderness in his writing. ... left you cold? PRIDE And Prejudice, by Jane Austen. I can see that Austen is a brilliant writer, that her observations – written 'with a fine brush on a little bit of ivory' – are subtle and astute. But I derive little pleasure from reading her. As a teenager, I much preferred Bronte's Wuthering Heights and its unhinged, wild, surreal spirit; the relationship between Cathy and Heathcliff stirred my soul, whilst Elizabeth and Darcy left me cold. But I'm aware that I'm in a minority here…
