Sheikha Moza attends UCQ final convocation

Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, chairperson of Qatar Foundation, on Sunday attended the final convocation of the University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ), marking the close of a remarkable chapter in the university's history.
The ceremony celebrated the achievements of its last cohort of graduates and paid tribute to UCQ's profound contributions to advancing Qatar's healthcare system over the past two decades.
Held at the Qatar National Convention Center (QNCC), the event was also graced by Minister of Education and Higher Education Her Excellency Lolwah bint Rashid bin Mohammed Al Khater along with senior officials from key national institutions, including the Ministry of Public Health, Hamad Medical Corporation, Sidra Medicine, and Qatar Foundation.
Ambassadors, faculty, staff, and families joined the graduates in celebrating the milestone.
A total of 120 graduates received their degrees, joining a distinguished network of more than 1,100 UCQ alumni who have played a critical role in elevating the nursing profession in Qatar.
Since its inception in 2006, UCQ has provided world-class nursing education tailored to local needs. Through its Bachelor of Nursing, Master of Nursing, and Nursing Foundations programs, UCQ has nurtured a highly skilled and diverse nursing workforce.
More than 120 Qatari nationals are among its graduates, many now serving in leadership roles across Qatar's healthcare landscape.
Opening the ceremony, UCQ President and CEO Prof Hala Sultan Saif Al Easa said, 'This graduating class stands as a testament to years of hard work, perseverance, and dedication. Today, 120 graduates join a legacy of over a thousand professionals who continue to strengthen Qatar's healthcare system.'
She added with pride, 'We were the first to offer a Qatar-accredited Bachelor of Nursing degree. Our CPD programmes and master's degrees in clinical nursing, leadership, and oncology have helped shape a robust nursing workforce essential to modern health care in Qatar.'
Echoing these sentiments, Sheikh Dr Khalid bin Jabor Al Thani, chair of the board of trustees at UCQ, emphasised the university's legacy and its alignment with national priorities.
Sheikh Dr Khalid bin Jabor Al Thani said, 'Today's ceremony is both a celebration and a farewell. We are incredibly proud of every student, and we honour the impact they have made, and will continue to make, on healthcare in Qatar. UCQ's contributions to the nation extend far beyond education; by cultivating a homegrown, highly qualified nursing workforce, the university has strengthened not only the health sector but also Qatar's economic resilience and national development goals in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030. As we mark the graduation of this final cohort, we do so with immense pride and gratitude for the deep and lasting impact UCQ has had on our society.'
Over nearly two decades, UCQ distinguished itself not only through academic excellence but also through a deep commitment to community engagement, research, and collaboration. Strategic partnerships with leading healthcare institutions—such as Hamad Medical Corporation, Sidra Medicine, and Primary Health Care Corporation—enabled students to gain hands-on experience that aligned with the dynamic needs of Qatar's healthcare system.
As part of its collaborative mission, UCQ actively contributed to the Interprofessional Education Committee (IPEC), joining forces with other major healthcare entities to promote interprofessional practice in the country.
Further cementing its leadership in nursing education, UCQ became the first institution in the Middle East to earn the prestigious Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) designation—an international benchmark for implementing and sustaining evidence-based nursing practices. Through these efforts, both students and faculty played a vital role in enhancing clinical outcomes and advancing patient-centered care.
Interim Dean of UCQ Dr Janet Rankin said, 'Although this final graduation marks the conclusion of UCQ's operations, it does not mark the end of our story. Coming from the main campus in Canada to serve in Qatar, I've had the privilege of contributing to the university's final chapter and witnessing firsthand the powerful impact of its mission. The dedication, compassion, and professionalism of our graduates are now deeply embedded in the fabric of Qatar's healthcare system.
'They embody the core values our institution upholds—excellence, service, and community. It has been an honour to be part of this journey and to see UCQ's legacy reflected in the lives and careers of our alumni. I am especially grateful to Qatar for its unwavering support and visionary leadership. UCQ's achievements have been made possible by the trust, generosity, and shared purpose that defined our partnership with this extraordinary nation.'
Emphasising the personal evolution of the graduating class, Director of Student and Enrolment Services at UCQ Hassan Kandar said, 'Each of our students carries a story of resilience, purpose, and transformation. Witnessing their journeys from orientation to convocation has been a privilege. They have grown into confident, skilled nursing professionals, ready to serve their communities. Today's ceremony stands as a testament to their perseverance and the unwavering support system that guided them.'
During the ceremony, Executive Director of Nursing Work Force Alanoud Hamad Almarri addressed the graduates.
In a moving gesture, she led the class in reciting the Graduates' Pledge, symbolising their shared commitment to their profession and society.
Though the university will soon close its doors, UCQ's legacy will live on through its alumni and the enduring impact it has made on Qatar's healthcare sector.

MoEHE launches student activity centers for summer 2025
Doha The Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE) on Sunday launched the Student Activity Centers for Summer 2025. The activities, which will continue until August 7, target Qatari and resident public schools students, as well as Qatari students in private schools, aged 6 to 18. The centers will be located in eight summer centers across the country, four for boys and four for girls. The ministry said that the launch of these centers comes within the framework of its commitment to investing students' free time during the summer vacation in quality and integrated activities that contribute to developing their personalities, honing their skills, and promoting the values of citizenship and responsibility within a safe and attractive educational environment that meets their psychological, social, and educational needs. MoEHE noted that the summer programme will run from Sunday to Thursday, with daily sessions held from 9 am to 1 pm. The programme features a diverse array of educational, cultural, artistic, sports, and technical activities, all designed within a comprehensive framework that fosters creativity, encourages innovation, and enhances leadership and life skills. It also aims to strengthen national identity, support mental and physical well-being, and cultivate a culture of sustainable learning and continuous self-development. The ministry has designed the programme's themes to cover modern and diverse fields, including: value education, cultural activities, digital solutions, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, arts and design, as well as themes of public health, sustainability, and the environment, to meet the aspirations of generations and enrich their summer experience. The programme's activities are organised in cooperation with several supporting entities, including ministries, national institutions, and educational and cultural centers. These include the Ministry of Sports and Youth, the Ministry of Public Health, the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, Qatar National Library, Qatar Museums, Aspire Academy, Qatar Scientific Club, Dar Katateeb, and the Qatar Red Crescent. The summer centers were carefully selected to ensure comprehensive geographic coverage. The boys' centers include: Omar bin Al Khattab Secondary School, Khalifa Secondary School, Al Wakra Secondary School, and Abdullah bin Ali Al Misnad Preparatory School. The girls' centers include: Umm Salama Primary School, Amna bint Wahab Secondary School, Sawda bint Zamaa Preparatory School, and Al Khor Preparatory School. This year's programme features specialised activities and initiatives, including cybersecurity and facility security awareness, religious lectures to promote Islamic values, public speaking, leadership, and volunteering programs, and workshops in the arts, science, and technology. The programme also includes the launch of the "School Innovation Incubators" initiative, in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports and Youth and the Qatar Scientific Club. This initiative provides an interactive learning environment equipped with advanced technologies, enabling students to transform their ideas into real-life projects, while offering specialized training in robotics, 3D printing, and entrepreneurship. The programme includes field visits to several national institutions and cultural landmarks, including the Qatar National Museum, the Qatar Media Corporation, the Equestrian Club, and the General Directorate of Coasts and Borders Security, with the aim of enhancing practical and applied learning and connecting learning to reality. The programme concludes with a celebratory day at Lusail Hall, featuring an exhibition of student activities, the final matches of the football league, and a ceremony honoring the participants in the presence of senior officials and representatives of supporting entities. A visual presentation documenting the educational impact of the program is also featured. In a statement on this occasion, Aisha Al Kaabi, Head of Programmes and Activities at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, emphasised that the summer programme aims to provide quality activities that meet students' aspirations and contribute to developing their skills and discovering their talents within an integrated educational and recreational environment. She stated that the centers offer programmes that focus on creativity and innovation, personal and social development, leadership and volunteer skills, along with training workshops in literature, arts, technology, sports, and health. They also include religious activities that promote positive values and behaviors, as well as weekly educational and recreational trips. She added that through these centers, the Ministry seeks to provide an integrated educational experience that contributes to building students' personalities, developing their capabilities in various aspects, and instilling the values of citizenship and excellence in serving the nation. The ministry called on parents to register their children through the "Maaref" portal for public services to take advantage of this unique opportunity, affirming its commitment to providing a safe and inspiring environment that enables students to discover their potential and direct them toward excellence and creativity. MoEHE intends to open Qatar Technical Secondary School for Girls - North in 2025-2026 academic year
Doha The Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE) intends to open Qatar Technical Secondary School for Girls - North, in the North District, during the upcoming 2025-2026 academic year. This strategic step aims to enhance technical and vocational education for girls and provide a specialised educational environment that contributes to preparing qualified national cadres for the labor market. This approach embodies the ministry's firm belief in the importance of applied education and its pivotal role in empowering female students with technical and professional skills through a balanced curriculum that combines theoretical and practical training, keeping pace with the rapidly changing demands of the national economy. The school will offer quality technical education in two main tracks: information technology and laboratory technician, in addition to the academic subjects prescribed for secondary school. According to the approved plan, the school will accept a maximum of 40 female students in the tenth grade in its first year. Registration for the 2025-2026 academic year is now open via the Maaref Public Service Portal on the Ministry of Education and Higher Education's website, for tenth grade students only. Applications are accepted in accordance with approved regulations, with priority given to the following categories: first, Qatari female students; second, daughters of Qatari women; third, daughters of citizens of Gulf Cooperation Council countries; and finally, female students born in Qatar and residing there. All applicants must meet the academic and health requirements for admission, which include passing admission tests and a personal interview, as well as submitting an official medical certificate confirming that the student is free of chronic diseases that might affect her participation in practical activities and training workshops. The admissions portal will be activated as of June 25, 2025, and official registration procedures will be completed by the start of the new academic year. Parents are also required to sign a declaration approving the student's transition to the new educational environment and to adhere to the Ministry's student assessment policy and registration procedures. The opening of the new school comes as part of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education's efforts to meet the educational needs of the outer regions and provide specialized educational options that support the national drive to diversify secondary education pathways. This is based on the results of opinion polls conducted by the Ministry with students and parents in the region, which revealed a growing desire to provide technical education for girls in the northern region. It's worth noting that Qatar currently hosts eight specialized schools, including three schools for girls: Qatar Technical Secondary School for Girls, Qatar Banking Studies and Business Administration School for Girls, and the new school in the north. The Ministry of Education and Higher Education affirms that this trend reflects its ongoing commitment to expanding vocational and technical education opportunities for students across the country, in line with the priorities of Qatar National Vision 2030, which support a knowledge-based economy and empower national human resources, especially women, to play an active role in comprehensive development.
