Opera singer Wynne Evans has hit back at BBC executives who accused him of using "misogynist" language during a Strictly Come Dancing photocall. Wynne, who rose to fame after being cast as the face of the Go Compare TV ads, said the entire experience had been "heartbreaking."
Wynne says he now realises that Strictly isn't for everyone, and he's spoken to a number of other competitors who had struggled on Strictly: "I loved the dancing part, and I did do really well but the rest of it wasn't right for me with my personality and with depression. It wasn't the right thing."
Wynne's biggest problem related show came after he was accused of using a vulgar sexual term in reference to pro dancer Janette Manrara – triggering a four-month-long controversy which, he says, has resulted in him being placed on a round-the-clock suicide watch by an NHS crisis team.

He told The Sun: "I wouldn't use that word and it's very difficult for the BBC because, historically, and by their own admission they've got it very, very wrong. So now they have to investigate everything, and they have to be seen to investigate everything."
It was alleged that, as he stood with Janette and fellow-competitor Jamie Borthwick, Wynne referred to a "spit-roast" – an expression used to describe group sex. The 53-year-old singer maintains that his words were misinterpreted.
He explained: "Spit-roast boy was a nickname we all gave Jamie Borthwick because he could contort his legs over his head like a spit-roast chicken."
(Image: BBC/Guy Levy)
He insists that there was no intended sexual undertone to the conversation, and that the fact that he had specifically said "spit-roast boy" made it clear that he was speaking to James, and not to Janette.
However, two weeks after the photo shoot, Wynne began to receive dozens of calls from his agent and BBC executives demanding an explanation for what he had said. He says that his first mistake was to apologise for any misunderstanding – which was seized upon as an admission of guilt.
"The press team issued a statement," he said. "When I read the apology within the context of the story as it had been written, I was absolutely horrified."
(Image: Katya Jones/Instagram)
He added: "The apology always makes it look worse. It validates the story." Within 48 hours of the original story running, Wynne was suspended by the BBC and dropped from the Strictly tour.
To make matters worse for Wynne, he had been caught on camera sliding his hand around the waist of his professional dance partner, Katya Jones, in a way that made him appear to be a "sex pest."
He now says that the move was part of a "body language experiment" initiated by Katya, and after viewers reacted he was instructed to make a video explaining what had happened.
Wynne claims that the initial video he made, which explained his actions fully, was dropped by BBC bosses of brewing "too long," but a shorter, simpler explanation made him come across as a "weirdo."
A third controversy, which Wynne says was simply a somewhat immature bit of backstage banter that got out of hand, saw him buying a sex toy for his soap star pal Jamie: "Obviously, in the light of everything else, it probably wasn't the most sensible thing to do," he admitted.
Wynne says that he feels wronged by BBC bosses, saying: "Personally I don't think I was due an investigation." He says it would be up to BBC director-general Tim Davie whether the corporation were ever to apologise to him.
He concedes that in a rapidly-changing world he "may have got it wrong on occasion," but would have been happy to attend any re-education course the BBC asked him to go on. He says he hadn't been given that opportunity and that all he can do now is concentrate on doing his job.

Kate Middleton 'mortified' by Tim Henman's Wimbledon encounter with her dad

Avid tennis fan Kate Middleton endured a cringeworthy moment at Wimbledon long before marrying Prince William, after her father's comment to British tennis star Tim Henman Sue Barker's illustrious broadcasting career with the BBC placed her at the heart of all the action for almost three decades. The former French Open champion's iconic role gave her the opportunity to interview a host of big names, from sports stars to members of the royal family. During her work on the 2017 BBC One documentary 'Our Wimbledon', Barker travelled around the world to discover what makes the All England Club grass so special for tennis lovers. ‌ That journey resulted in interviews with the Duke of Kent and Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, who is a known tennis fan and is often spotted in the SW19 stands with her family. ‌ In the latter interview, Princess Kate shared an embarrassing incident from years ago, before she had married Prince William. She revealed how her father, Michael Middleton, once approached British tennis icon Tim Henman, confusing him with 14-time Grand Slam champion Pete Sampras. Barker recounted the tale in her 2024 book, ' Wimbledon: A Personal History ', which provides her perspective on the major tournament, from her days as a junior competitor to her retirement from broadcasting over half a century later in 2022. The 69-year-old wrote: 'During the filming of my Our Wimbledon documentary, I interviewed both the Duke of Kent and Catherine, now Princess of Wales. 'Catherine was so lovely to talk to too. I waited in a room in Kensington Palace with producer Carl Doran and the camera crew. 'We were all a bit on edge and then in she came and put us all at ease, even saying she was a bit nervous as she hadn't given many interviews. (I'm sure she said that to make me feel better.) ‌ 'She was a natural in front of the camera and what came across in the interview was her obvious love for the game from an early age. 'Tennis is a family passion and the Middletons came to queue and watch Wimbledon most years. She told me how mortified she was when her father once mistook Tim Henman for Pete Sampras. ''My father is not going to appreciate this, but we were walking past Tim Henman and we had just seen Sampras play. And dad said very coolly, 'Hi Pete.' I was mortified!'' Since that embarrassing encounter, Princess Kate has had plenty of opportunities to meet Henman and rectify her father's past mishap. As a regular attendee of high-profile matches, she is often seen sitting in the Royal Box. The Princess also presents the tournament's finalists with their trophies, the most recent recipient being men's singles champion Carlos Alcaraz in 2024.

Superman actor hopes to bring hero to a new generation

David Corenswet, who stars as the eponymous hero in the upcoming reboot of the same name, also told of the experience of making the character 'his own', at a red carpet event in Leicester Square on Wednesday. David Corenswet (left), Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult attend a Superman fan event at Cineworld Leicester Square, London (Lucy North/PA) The 31-year-old, who has the dual role of Clark Kent and his Kryptonian alter-ego, told the PA news agency: 'You can't help but make it your own. 'I wish I could just give the great performances that have come before, but I couldn't help but do my own thing. 'So much of (the history) is already in the character and people's knowledge and love of the character. 'So that sort of came for free, and I just had the great opportunity to maybe explore some different forms of the character and hopefully bring him to a new generation who maybe haven't had their first Superman experience.' He joked that he didn't have big shoes to fill as his were custom-made, so they 'fit like a glove'. The James Gunn-directed remake, described as 'the true beginning of the DC Universe', sees Twisters actor Corenswet protecting Earth from Nicholas Hoult's scheming Lex Luthor. Gunn, a self-confessed DC Comics superfan, co-chief executive of DC Studios and writer of the reboot, said he has brought his favourite elements of the comics into the 21st century – including superhero dog Krypto. 'This is really about presenting the Superman to the world that I love and have loved since I was a kid,' Gunn told PA. The Marvellous Mrs Maisel actress Rachel Brosnahan stars as Lois Lane, and her romantic connection with Clark Kent has been teased in a trailer in which they stare at each other in the Daily Planet newspaper offices, and later embrace. Brosnahan said filming with her co-stars and Gunn was 'a blast'. She said: '(The film) gave us the opportunity to deepen the relationship between Lane and Kent and explore more deeply this relationship that you've come to know in the comics for so many years.' On playing a reporter, the 34-year-old said: 'I have a whole new appreciation and, also, I'm on to your tips and tricks.' Director James Gunn said the film was about presenting Superman to the world that he loves (Lucy North/PA) Gunn, famed for Marvel film series Guardians Of The Galaxy and DC Comics movie The Suicide Squad, said he is excited for fans to see the personal interactions between Lane and Kent. He added: 'I'm excited for every piece of it, and it makes me it really warms my heart that all of these people are so excited to be here.' British actor Hoult plays Superman's nemesis and the chief executive of the LuthorCorp, and the film also stars several DC superheroes, including Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), a Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion) and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced). It will be released in UK cinemas on July 11 by Warner Bros Pictures.
