As winter power bills hit and broadband prices spike, NZ Compare is urging Kiwis to take control of their household bills.
The cost-of-living crisis continues on a relentless march and Kiwi households are being hit with a one-two punch: the first hefty winter power bills have landed, and Spark, New Zealand's largest broadband provider, has announced yet another round of broadband price hikes. Meanwhile, last week Frank Energy customers have been told the brand is closing, and they'll be moved to parent company Genesis Energy, which will likely come with an increase in the size of the household power bill. For consumers already feeling the financial squeeze, it's just more frustrating news-and a reminder that loyalty often comes at a price.
But there is hope for those willing to take action. In response to these developments, NZ Compare, the country's leading comparison platform for utilities and services, is seeing record traffic. Last week alone, the group's websites experienced their highest-ever weekly traffic, and more than 50,000 New Zealanders have already used the platforms during June to compare broadband, power, and mobile deals.
"This is exactly the time when people need to take control," says Gavin Male, CEO of NZ Compare. "Just as that first big winter power bill hits your wallet, Spark is turning up the heat with fibre broadband price increases. You don't have to sit back and take it. There are some really competitive deals out there and if you are already on a fibre broadband connection, switching provider is incredibly simple."
Spark's latest price increases follow a broader industry trend of rising costs being passed on to customers, often with little warning. Many consumers, like those previously with Frank Energy, are left scrambling for alternatives.
"Whether you're dealing with Spark bumping up your fibre broadband bill or a power provider charging more for the same, it's time to stop paying the loyalty tax," continues Male. "These companies rely on customers staying passive. The bill apathy has got to stop! By comparing and switching, you're not only saving money-you're putting pressure on the market and these companies to stay competitive."

Kiwi inflation accelerated over the June quarter. Annual headline rose to 2.7% from 2.5%. It's a move in the wrong direction. But context is key. A strengthening in imported inflation is driving headline higher. But domestic price pressures, on balance, continue to cool. And most importantly, the underlying trend in consumer prices is weak. Excluding the volatile movements in food and fuel, annual core inflation lifted to 2.7% from 2.6%. A move that was better than many had feared, and one that will improve into next year. For now, there's little risk this bout of high inflation will persist. Especially given that there's still significant spare capacity in the Kiwi economy. Today's report showed that price increases are becoming less extreme. The proportion of goods and services that increased in price was little changed at 54%. However, the June quarter saw a greater share of the basket record a decline in price, from 30% (185 items) to 35% (210 items). A larger proportion of items either remained flat or increased in price by less than 3 percent in the 12 months to June 2025. The rapid deceleration in imported inflation, which helped to pull down headline, is reversing course. We're no longer importing deflation. Annual tradables inflation lifted from 0.3% to 1.2%. The 4.2% increase in food prices accounted for 28.5% of the lift in headline inflation. Domestic inflation, in contrast, continues its (slow) move south. Annual non-tradables inflation pierced below 4% for the first time in four years to 3.7%. Domestic inflation has fallen some way from its 6.8% peak in 2023, but it is still sitting high above the long-term average (~3%). And that's despite such a weak domestic economy. Such persistence is due to the lingering strength in administered prices. Council rates and insurance costs are running well above historic averages, up 12.2%yoy and 6%yoy, respectively. And households are now contending with high electricity charges, climbing to 9.1%yoy. If we exclude housing-related inflation, domestic inflation prints at 3.5% – the lowest since December 2021. Given excess capacity still sloshing in the economy, domestic inflation should continue to head lower. But the pace of easing is being dictated by factors largely outside of the RBNZ's control. That's a frustration. Inflation will likely push higher in the coming quarter. But like any spike, it will come back down. The economic undercurrents are weak. For monetary policy, the underlying trend in inflation is what matters most. Monetary policy settings today, are set for an economy 12-to-24 months down the track. It takes a long time for movements in the cash rate, and other lending rates, to influence the economy. So, a knee-jerk reaction to a couple of internationally charged price shocks is not on the cards. The RBNZ's job is to look through volatile movements, and set policy for late next year. And in late 2026, inflation is set to slow below the mid-point of the target band (2%). It's why we focus more on core. Core measures of inflation strip out the volatile price movements. Encouragingly, core inflation has been trending south since hitting the 6.7% peak at the end of 2022. At 2.7% (in the year to June 2025), core inflation remains within the RBNZ's target band. Our forecast stirps out the spikes and looks at slack in the economy. And there's a lot of slack, especially in the labour market. Our best guess, incorporating the damage inflicted through the recession we're still crawling out of, has inflation falling to 1.8% next year. If realised, the RBNZ continues to overcook. And we continue to advocate a stimulatory setting of 2.5%.

ComCom Finds No Evidence Of Cartel Behaviour In Banks' Involvement In Net-Zero Banking Alliance
The Commerce Commission has investigated and found no evidence to support a complaint from Federated Farmers of New Zealand (Federated Farmers) alleging potentially anti-competitive, coordinated, cartel-like behaviour involving five major banks in New Zealand associated with the Net-Zero Banking Alliance. The banks involved are ANZ Bank New Zealand Limited (ANZ), ASB Bank Limited (ASB), Bank of New Zealand (BNZ), Rabobank New Zealand Limited (Rabobank), and Westpac New Zealand Limited (Westpac). These banks collectively account for around 97% of New Zealand's agricultural lending market. Commerce Commission General Manager Competition, Fair Trading and Credit Vanessa Horne says the complaint, received last December, alleged the banks were coordinating their agricultural lending policies to align with Net-Zero Banking Alliance strategies and targets. It alleged that, in doing so, the banks were potentially acting anti-competitively, in breach of the Commerce Act. The complaint also raised concerns that this alleged coordination could reduce farmers' access to capital, resulting in higher borrowing costs and stricter lending terms. 'We know New Zealanders are very focused on the work being done by the Commission (and others) to ensure banks are acting fairly - and farmers are no different,' says Ms Horne. 'If we see activity that falls foul of the laws we enforce, we will not hesitate to act. In this case, however, we thoroughly investigated the complaint and concluded that the banks had made their own, independent decisions. We found no evidence of unlawful coordination between the banks or with the Net-Zero Banking Alliance, either relating to the banks joining or in meeting their obligations under this alliance.' On that basis, the Commission says, it will be taking no further action. The Commission is keenly aware that, in many sectors, New Zealand businesses are working hard to develop and deliver sustainability initiatives together. New Zealand's competition laws can accommodate such collaboration - to help businesses, the Commission has developed Collaboration and Sustainability Guidelines that can be found on its website. Background The Net-Zero Banking Alliance The Net-Zero Banking Alliance is a United Nations (UN) convened initiative, supporting banks to lead on climate mitigation in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement. It was co-launched on 21 April 2021 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Financial Initiative and the Prince of Wales Sustainable Markets Initiative Financial Services Taskforce, with 43 initial banks as signatories. Joining the Net-Zero Banking Alliance is entirely voluntary, and any signatory may join or withdraw at any time. Banks that choose to become signatories to this alliance make a public statement of an intention to align the greenhouse gas emissions from their lending and investment portfolios with net-zero pathways by 2050 or earlier. The Net-Zero Banking Alliance does not prescribe targets that signatories should set. Instead, it provides signatories with a framework for target setting, resources, global expertise, and tools to help them individually assess the emissions within their portfolios and understand ways that the shift of capital towards low-carbon activity might be accelerated.
