China urges sports bodies to reject Enhanced Games
BEIJING : The Chinese Anti-Doping Agency (CHINADA) has denounced the Enhanced Games on Friday and called on the global sports community to collectively oppose the competition that endorses the use of banned substances.
The Enhanced Games will debut in May 2026 in Las Vegas with swimming, athletics and weightlifting on the agenda for athletes using substances banned in official competition, to the dismay of anti-doping bodies like the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
Participants could earn prize money totalling up to US$500,000 per event plus bonuses for surpassing a world record mark.
CHINADA denounced the event in a statement to state news agency Xinhua on Friday, calling it 'a distorted competition that turns pure sports competition into a drug contest, which serious(ly) contradicts the purpose of the World Anti-Doping Code.'
'It severely threatens the physical and mental health of athletes as well as the spirit of sport. In addition, its publicity tactics reveal its nature as a capital-driven initiative.
'CHINADA hereby expresses our firm opposition to any attempt to portray doping as so-called scientific advancements, and calls on the global sports community to stand united in rejecting the Enhanced Games,' it said.
The Enhanced Games operate under the principle that banning performance-enhancing drugs in major competitions does not protect athletes but rather stifles their performance. Organisers have called on athletes to join the competition.
However, CHINADA said the Enhanced Games organisers lure athletes with high prizes into risking their health and feeding public appetite for a 'gladiator show'.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Malaysia's top women's doubles pair, Pearly Tan-M Thinaah, cruised into the second round of the China Open after easily seeing off compatriots Ong Xin Yi-Carmen Ting in straight games tonight. Pearly-Thinaah took just 24 minutes to defeat their teenage rivals 21-8, 21-12, Utusan Malaysia reported. They will face Japan's Rui Hirokami-Sayaka Hobara in the next round. Also progressing to the second round were world 22 pair Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing, who swept aside Poland's Paulina Hankiewicz-Kornelia Marczak 21-5, 21-6 in 22 minutes. Pei Kee-Mei Xing will face much tougher opponents when they meet world No 8 pair Rin Iwanaga-Kie Nakanishi of Japan next. Men's doubles pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun also progressed by defeating fellow Malaysians Yap Roy King-Wan Arif Junaidi 21-17, 21-16. They will face another Malaysian pair, Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong, which guarantees Malaysia a spot in the quarter-finals.

The world No 4 pair beat the much lower-ranked Gao Jia Xuan-Wu Meng Ying 22-20, 21-7 in a 31-minute match. It was their second win over the Chinese pair in as many encounters. A tougher challenge awaits in the quarter-finals where they will meet China's world No 9 pair Guo Xin Wa-Chen Fang Hui. The China Open is a lucrative World Tour Super 1000 event which offers a total cash prize of US$2 million (RM8.4 million).
