New Zealand braces for severe weather as storm threatens flooding
The northern regions of both the South Island and North Island of the country could be severely affected by the wild weather, the country's weather bureau said in its latest update.
New Zealand's MetService said the wind would pick up from Friday afternoon, with gusts of up to 120 kph (75 mph) forecast for some regions. There could be severe thunderstorms later on Friday, MetService's Heather Keats said.
A state of local emergency has been declared for the Nelson Tasman region for the second time in as many months with officials warning that rivers could rise quickly because the ground remains wet following floods at the end of last month.
Motorists have been urged to stay off the roads, while the authorities have asked residents in the Nelson Tasman region to evacuate their homes if they feel unsafe.
"In these conditions, it's just not worth the risk," the Tasman District Council said in a post on social media.
"We have a number of roads already closed ... and we're expecting more closures to happen in the coming hours due to tree falls from heavy winds and significant surface flooding."

Neighbors are grateful no one is hurt after massive tree falls on of two homes in Trenton, New Jersey
Strong winds left behind quite a bit of damage as large trees came down on houses in Trenton, New Jersey. Neighbors noticed the winds picking up very quickly. A massive tree fell on two homes along Newell Avenue in Trenton Friday night. Troy Livingston, who lives across the street, said he was cooking on the grill when the dark clouds rolled in and the wind picked up. "It was just one gust of wind," Livingston said. The next second, he said the tree came down. "Before it started raining, we just heard a weird sound," he said. Firefighters and city crews were on scene assessing the damage. CBS News Philadelphia was told no one lives in the homes currently. Although Livingston said his sister used to live in one of them and she just moved out a week ago. Neighbors also said this wasn't the first time a tree fell on their street this summer. They said a tree fell on their cars in June. "They are hollow, so they just fall and it didn't even start raining. It was the wind," Livingston said. People who live and were visiting when the tree came down said they are just happy no one was hurt.

Holloman AFB and Fort Bliss participate in flood relief efforts with the Mescalero Apache Tribe
NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Soldiers and airmen are lending a hand to the relief efforts in Lincoln County. More than 90 personnel from Holloman Air Force Base and Fort Bliss visited the Mescalero Apache Tribe this week, removing debris, filling sandbags, and sorting clothes. 'Major Disaster Declaration' approved for New Mexico amid severe storms, floods Holloman AFB officials said the Mescalero Tribal Fish Hatchery was one of the hardest hit areas, as it lost 80% of its fish because of contaminated water. 'At the fish hatchery, we were able to clear debris from three different waterways, and then also use sandbags to refortify the area just to divert the floods from any of their important segments of it,' said Capt.
