SIAM and KVS launch National Road Safety Education Programme for school students

Time of India22-04-2025
The
Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers
(
SIAM
), in collaboration with
Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan
(
KVS
), has launched a nationwide online
road safety
education programme aimed at school students. The initiative is being carried out under the guidance of the
Ministry of Road Transport and Highways
and the
Ministry of Education
.
Curriculum-integrated modules for road safety education
The programme will be implemented in 1,253 Kendriya Vidyalayas and it will deliver six interactive digital modules tailored to different school levels—Foundational, Middle, and Senior Secondary. These modules address key topics such as basic road safety, pedestrian awareness, seatbelt and helmet usage, road rules, safe travel practices, and legal aspects.
The programme is part of SIAM's 'Surakshit Safar' (Safe Journey) initiative and supports the broader aim of promoting responsible road behaviour through early education. It follows a successful pilot run at Kendriya Vidyalaya, R.K. Puram in October 2024. Based on positive feedback from educators and students, SIAM has developed a web-based Learning Management System (LMS) to integrate road safety sessions into school curricula.
Prashant K Banerjee
, Executive Director, SIAM, said, "We, at SIAM, are eager to join hands with all teachers and students to restore the glorious identity of India, and we believe this is possible through the support of young builders gathered here today. As India's infrastructure transforms and the nation moves towards the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047, it proudly stands as the third-largest automobile market in the world.
Nitin Gadkari
, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways said, 'The government has introduced several new rules, like mandatory rear seat belts, and these habits should be taught early in childhood. It's important that these lessons start in schools. Through this programme, we have approached the Ministry of Education to incorporate road safety learning in schools. I would request students to advise their parents against using mobile phones while driving, and encourage responsible behaviour on roads.'

India's automobile exports jump 22% in April-June quarter

India's automobile exports grew by 22 per cent year-on-year (YoY) in the April-June quarter of the current financial year (Q1 FY26), according to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). This strong growth was driven by record shipments of passenger vehicles, along with solid performance in two-wheelers, commercial vehicles, and three-wheelers. In total, India exported 14,57,461 vehicles across all categories in the first quarter, up from 11,92,566 units during the same period the previous year. Passenger vehicle exports reached an all-time high of 2,04,330 units in the April-June quarter -- marking a 13 per cent increase compared to 1,80,483 units exported in the same quarter last year. SIAM attributed this growth to stable demand in most international markets, with strong performance in the Middle East and Latin America. Exports also received a boost from recovering demand in neighbouring countries like Sri Lanka and Nepal, as well as growing interest from Japan. SIAM further noted that Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with countries such as Australia helped increase shipments. Maruti Suzuki , the leading carmaker in the country, was the top exporter of passenger vehicles in the April-June quarter. The company sent 96,181 cars to other countries, which is over 37 per cent more than the 69,962 cars it exported during the same period the previous year. Hyundai Motor India exported 48,140 cars during this time, a 13 per cent increase compared to 42,600 cars in the April-June quarter of the previous year. Two-wheeler exports saw a 23 per cent rise, reaching 11,36,942 units in Q1, up from 9,23,148 units during the same period the previous year. Commercial vehicle exports also grew by 23 per cent, with shipments rising to 19,427 units. Three-wheeler exports recorded the highest growth rate among all segments, jumping 34 per cent to 95,796 units in the April-June quarter.
