Sony's Xperia 1 VII camera phone has been given this key power-up
The phone boasts modest upgrades from the Xperia 1 VI which we were very impressed by on review in 2024 – even though it ended some previous stapes of the lineup such as a 4K display and 21:9 aspect ratio display.
But while much of the phone's basics are unchanged, the camera does have a much more impressive power-up – the ultrawide lens now boasts a much larger 48MP 1/1.56-inch sensor (2.1 times large than the Xperia 1 VI), more equivalent to a full-frame camera. The lens has also gone from a 12mm unit to a 16mm one.
Sony says night shots in particular should be much better as a result, with higher dynamic range and less noise. The other cameras are unchanged so you get an 85-170mm Exmor RS 12MP telephoto and 24mm/48mm Exmor T main 48MP camera with 2x optical zoom.
There are also two AI camera enhancements as well. AI Camera Work enables you to create smooth video of a subject without you needing to continually check if the subject is in shot. So you can look where you're walking if you're moving around something as you record. Auto Framing can automatically crops the shot even if you move or your subject does and you can record two streams of this footage simultaneously; both in close-up as well as a wide shot.
The Xperia 1 VII won't be available in the US again it seems but costs a hefty £1399/€1499 in Europe. Sony hasn't shared official imagery with me as yet, so I'll update this story with better pictures when it does.
The Xperia 1 VII has the a very similar design to its predecessor – there's no new beginning here – and it retains the 'best of Sony' ethos that combines the Alpha camera knowledge, Bravia display quality and Walkman audio. It's compatible with 360 Reality Audio , DSEE Ultimate and Dolby Atmos, plus it also has plenty of gaming features such as Sony's PlayStation Remote Play and controller compatibility.

it once again boasts a 6.6in 120Hz FHD+ OLED display and 5000mAh battery with wireless charging but the key hardware inside has been upgraded to Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 8 Elite platform. There's also 12GB of memory as well as a meagre 256GB of storage but you can expand to 2TB with a microSDXC card.
Sony has however, added an extra light sensor so it can react better to ambient conditions and Sony says the Sunlight Vision feature will make the display even better to use in bright conditions.

The OnePlus Watch 3 43mm slims down my favourite WearOS wearable
How do you make the current king of Android smartwatches even more of a terrific timepiece? Shrinking it down to a smaller package, so anyone can strap one on no matter their wrist size, sounds like a good plan. That's exactly what OnePlus has done with the Watch 3 43mm. Essentially a skinnier take on the OnePlus Watch 3 I gave a glowing five star score to at the start of 2025, the Watch 3 43mm swaps that model's 1.5in circular AMOLED screen for a 1.32in panel, and ditches the numbered bezel. The result is a 10% smaller footprint, while smarter component placement has also made it 7% thinner and 24% lighter than its bigger brother. The slimmer watch body has skinnier straps to match, with quick-release lugs and a flush fitting that should make swapping between bands a bit easier than the chunkier 45mm Watch 3. There are two strap options at launch – one black, one white – with both being made from the same rubber polymer as the regular Watch 3. It's still packing the same comprehensive set of health and fitness tracking sensors, including the touch-sensitive shortcut button that can take ECG readings. The functional rotating crown also makes a return, for easily scrolling through the Wear OS interface. OnePlus has expanded its mind and body tracking here, and included a female reproductive health record too. Expect the same degree of protection from the elements, with IP68, 5ATM and MIL-STD-810H ratings so you can wear it just about anywhere, and for any sport or activity. Speaking of, it'll track over 100 different kinds. Power again comes from Qualcomm's Snapdragon W5 chipset, paired with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of on-board storage. OnePlus has also kept its second, lower-power CPU for maximum battery savings when in the Watch-only or always-on display modes. That means the Watch 3 43mm should be able to manage an impressive 60 hours in smart mode, or seven days in power saver, despite OnePlus having to shrink the battery in order to squeeze inside the smaller chassis. A few days less than the larger Watch 3 can manage, sure – but still as good as, or better, than most mainstream Wear OS rivals. The OnePlus Watch 3 43mm is on sale from today, for £269/€299 – so essentially the same as the larger model, now that post-launch discounts are easier to come by. That makes it a little pricier than the 40mm Samsung Galaxy Watch7, but a whole lot easier on the wallet than Google's Pixel Watch 3. There was no word on US pricing or availability at the time of writing.

Sony just gave our favourite headphones a free upgrade they actually needed
Not to sound like a broken record, but the new Sony WH-1000XM6 headphones really are a stellar set of cans. They're some of, if not the best noise-canceling headphones money can buy. Replacing the XM5s, they've easily jumped to be some of our favourite cans, and now they're getting even better. The excellent WH-1000XM6 headphones, alongside the WF-1000XM5 earbuds, are getting a free update that adds some useful features, not just vague promises of 'stability improvements.' Rolled out via Sony's Sound Connect app, the updates bring a handful of changes that make these headphones feel even more premium. Version 5.0.2 for the XM6 over-ears and 2.0.2 for the XM5 in-ears unlock new tricks like a low-latency mode. It's ideal for anyone that spends most of their time watching content or gaming with these headphones. Quick Access and Scene-based Listening also get a welcome tune-up. The features will now switch to your tunes more quickly based on your activity or location. The over-ears get some bonus features, including voice call improvements that work regardless of how much ambient sound you let in. There's even moisture detection for the USB-C port now, so if you've got them sweaty or soggy, it's not the end of the world. Multilingual voice control options have also expanded to include French, German and Spanish. Sony's free software update for these headphones is free and available now through the Sound Connect app. Updating can take up to an hour, and your headphones need to be fully charged first.
