NGT issues notices on alleged plastic waste violations by tobacco brands

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) issued notice on a plea from The Citizens Foundation, which alleges widespread non-compliance with the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, by manufacturers of gutkha, pan masala, and tobacco products.
The petition claims that banned plastic packaging materials are still being used and calls for strict enforcement of existing regulations. This includes the closure of units violating the rules and the recovery of environmental compensation.
A judicial bench led by Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Expert Member Dr. A. Senthil Vel has issued notices to relevant authorities, including the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), seeking their responses.
Counsel for the petitioner pointed out that, despite the CPCB's earlier directives, issued on October 22, 2021, under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, to 25 manufacturers to halt operations unless they adopted eco-friendly packaging, these directives remain unimplemented.
The CPCB had instructed the defaulting companies to submit a timeline for switching to sustainable materials and to pay Environmental Compensation (EC) with interest for any delays.
The plea highlights violations of Rules 4(f) and 4(i) of the 2016 Rules, which prohibit the use of plastic sachets and specific polymers in packaging gutkha and related products. CPCB's previous reports suggested that such non-compliance could result in stern penalties, including seizure of goods, shutting down of factories, and levies of Rs 5,000 per ton of plastic used. Repeat offences could attract additional fines of up to Rs 20,000 per ton.
The applicant also cited a CPCB report from January 2021, which outlines enforcement under the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regime. According to this, delayed EC payments could be penalised with annual interest ranging from 12 per cent to 24 per cent. Delays exceeding three months could lead to factory closures and criminal prosecution under Section 15(1) of the Environment Protection Act.
Recognising the gravity of the environmental concerns raised, the NGT has scheduled the next hearing for September 26, 2025. The applicant must serve notices on the remaining respondents and file an affidavit of service one week prior to the scheduled date, as stated by the Tribunal.

New auto fare rates in Bengaluru from tomorrow, govt sets October 31 deadline to update meters

The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Thursday issued a directive mandating all autorickshaws operating in Bengaluru to update their fare meters with the newly revised rates by October 31. The new rates will be applicable from August 1. According to the new rates, the minimum fare for the first two kilometres has been increased from Rs 30 to Rs 36. For every subsequent kilometre, passengers will now have to pay Rs 18, up from the earlier Rs 15. The night fare – applicable between 10 pm and 5 am – will be charged at 1.5 times the regular rate. Waiting charges, too, have been revised, with the first five minutes remaining free. Beyond that, a fee of Rs 10 will be charged for every 15 minutes of waiting. In terms of baggage, up to 20 kg is allowed free of cost. An additional Rs 10 will be charged for every 20 kg or part thereof, with the maximum baggage limit capped at 50 kg. Additionally, Karthik Reddy, Joint Commissioner, Bengaluru (Traffic), also issued a directive on Wednesday, directing all traffic police officials to book cases against errant auto drivers who charge exorbitant fares in violation of the government-fixed rates. The RTA order would also mean that aggregator apps like Rapido, Namma Yatri, Uber, and Ola are also set to embrace the new fare structure. As per the Karnataka High Court's October 2022 order, app-based auto aggregators are allowed to charge only 10 per cent above the government-notified fare, plus 5 per cent goods and services tax. The RTA has instructed that auto rickshaw meters must be recalibrated to reflect the revised fares and certified by the Legal Metrology Department within the given timeline. To streamline the process, all Legal Metrology inspectors working within the city –excluding those from the Investigation Wing – have been directed to focus solely on verifying and stamping auto rickshaws in Bengaluru city limits, irrespective of their usual jurisdiction. 'This special arrangement will remain in effect until the October-end deadline. Post October 31, the Legal Metrology Department will revert to its regular jurisdiction-based operations, as per existing norms,' the notification said. This is the first fare revision since November 2021, when the base fare was increased from Rs 25 to Rs 30 and the per-kilometre charge from Rs 13 to Rs 15. Before that, fares were last changed in 2013. The latest revision follows repeated appeals from auto unions, which have cited rising fuel prices, higher maintenance costs, and inflation as reasons why the earlier fares were no longer sustainable. However, many drivers have expressed disappointment with the RTA's decision, saying their demand for a Rs 40 base fare and Rs 20 per kilometre was not met. Michelle Khiangte, a regular auto user, told The Indian Express, 'With the current pricing mechanisms coupled with tipping, the auto fares are… very high and unjustified. Now with the new revision, it will pinch my pocket even more. For a Rs 100 journey, I am paying Rs 150. With the new rates I would be shelling out around Rs 170-Rs 180. The bulk of my expenditure is channelled towards commuting, and this has eventually made transport in Bengaluru very costly.' Satya Arikutharam, mobility expert and a regular auto user, said, 'The fare revision for autos was long overdue. That said, hardly any autos were operating the fare meter. Commuters must be vigilant about fares from tomorrow, if not aggregators are likely to increase them even further. The best way to ensure this is for commuters to insist that the drivers operate the fare meter for their trips. The Transport Department must put more monitoring efforts than now to ensure autos operate the fare meter, which is a permit condition, on all their trips. Aggregators must also follow the fare notification as the High Court has upheld the state's right to notify and enforce fares.'

Eicher Motors Q1 net rises 9% to Rs 1,205 cr on record Royal Enfield sales

Eicher Motors reported a 9.4 per cent rise in consolidated net profit to Rs 1,205 crore for the first quarter of FY2025–26, compared to Rs 1,101 crore in the same period last year. The growth was driven by record revenue and robust vehicle sales by both Royal Enfield and VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV). The company posted its best-ever Q1 revenue from operations at Rs 5,042 crore, up 14.8 per cent from Rs 4,393 crore in the year-ago quarter. EBITDA stood at Rs 1,203 crore, up 3.2 per cent from Rs 1,165 crore. Royal Enfield sold 261,326 motorcycles during the quarter, a 14.7 per cent year-on-year increase from 227,736 units in Q1 FY2024–25. Managing Director of Eicher Motors and CEO of Royal Enfield, B Govindarajan, said the brand sustained its growth momentum through product innovation and a continued focus on immersive riding experiences. 'The refreshed Hunter 350 continues to be a key marker of growth for us, both in terms of volumes and community engagement,' Govindarajan noted. He also highlighted the expansion in the SAARC region and the launch of the locally assembled Classic 350 in Nepal as part of the company's global ambition. VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV), a joint venture of Eicher Motors, posted revenue of Rs 5,671 crore in Q1 FY26, a rise of 11.9 per cent from Rs 5,070 crore a year ago. EBITDA surged 32.6 per cent to Rs 511 crore from Rs 385 crore. VECV sold 21,610 vehicles in the quarter, up 9.7 per cent year-on-year from 19,702 units. Vinod Aggarwal, managing director and CEO of VECV and vice-chairman of Eicher Motors, said VECV delivered its best-ever Q1 performance. Market share rose to 18.7 per cent from 17.3 per cent a year earlier, driven by 34.5 per cent share in light and medium-duty (LMD) trucks and a strong 14.8 per cent volume growth in buses. The bus segment's market share rose to 21.5 per cent. While VECV's revenue and EBITDA are not included in Eicher Motors' consolidated figures, the company's share of profits from the joint venture is accounted for as a single line item in the consolidated profit after tax. The strong performance of both Royal Enfield and VECV reinforces Eicher Motors' continued growth trajectory across its core segments.
