Fundraiser launched after crucifix 'torched' and gravestones damaged at Scots cemetery
A fundraiser has been launched by a local church after a crucifix was "torched" and gravestones were damaged at a cemetery in East Renfrewshire.
Police launched a probe following reports of vandalism at St Conval's Cemetery on Glasgow Road in Hurlet, Barrhead, in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The Diocese of Paisley have now set up the fundraiser to pay for the repairs and have donated £15,000 to help families impacted.
A statement to accompany the fundraiser reads: "Following the recent acts of vandalism carried out at St Conval's Cemetery and after many inquiries, the Diocese of Paisley has decided to set up a fund to provide the necessary repairs to the vandalised gravestones. "The Diocese will contribute an initial sum of £15,000 to formally launch the appeal. "All money donated will be distributed to the affected families and used to refurbish the scorched crucifix. We are incredibly grateful for the support and generosity in this difficult time."

On Tuesday a man appeared at Paisley Sheriff Court charged with wilful fire-raising, malicious mischief, breach of the peace and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and admission that weapon was carried with intended use to injure someone.
Grzegorz Strzelecki, of no fixed abode, made no plea, was committed for further examination and remanded in custody. He is set to be back in the dock within the next eight days.

A Police Scotland spokesperson previously said: "A 39-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with wilful fire-raising and vandalism at St Conval's Cemetery on Glasgow Road in Hurlet, Barrhead.
"Officers attended after receiving a report of the incident around 8.50am on Sunday, June 29, 2025.
"The man was due to appear at Paisley Sheriff Court on Monday, 30 June, 2025. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
The Bishop of Paisley, Bishop John Keenan previously said: 'I am saddened and dismayed.
'My thoughts and prayers are with the families, as well as with the whole community of relatives and friends who visit St Conval's and care for the graves of their loved ones so tenderly.'
The bishop added: 'My gratitude goes to the St Conval's staff who maintain the grounds and administer the cemetery.'

She said: 'Every year as part of the Drymen Gala Day celebrations, there's a scarecrow competition and this year we decided to do Billy with his banana feet. 'It turned out great and you have no idea the number of people who stopped to photograph it. Some even climbed up to our fence to have their picture taken beside Billy. 'The gala committee decided on a Hawaiian theme for the scarecrows this year so we just shoved a garland round its neck. 'It was great. I went into the butcher's and he said it was the talk of the steamie. 'But on Saturday night, a car pulled up, and somebody jumped out and stole our scarecrow. 'It's wearing my leggings and T-shirt and I'd like them back. 'I was angry at first but we can see the funny side now. 'If the scarecrow is off on a haycation somewhere and somebody's getting pleasure from it, fair enough. But I'd hate to think it's been flytipped, because a lot of work went into it. Mum, 39, dies after being found injured on street as police launch murder probe
Officers were called to a report that a woman had been seriously injured at around 4.25pm on Saturday. She was treated by paramedics but pronounced dead at the scene Police have launched a murder inquiry after 39-year-old mum died after being found seriously injured in the street. Yesterday afternoon emergency services rushed to South Road at about 4.25pm upon receiving reports of a woman on the road sustaining severe injuries Despite the swift response of paramedics, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A 20-year-old man has been charged, but no further details have been given. Police have now identified the victim as Dr Fortune Gomo, a mother who had been residing in the area. Police Scotland have now confirmed:"A post-mortem has taken place and her death is now being treated as murder." As tributes pour in, a lifelong friend from her high school and university days in Zimbabwe remembers Dr Gomo's exceptional intellect and heartfelt nature. Angela Machonesa, who studied alongside Dr Gomo both at Chinhoyi High School and the National University of Science and Technology, took to social media to honour her friend's memory. Angela said: "She was the kind of person you'd go to when you needed clarity, not just of mind, but of heart. She listened. She cared. She uplifted. No wonder she went on to earn her PhD. It was only natural. Her path was written in the stars long ago. To serve. To lead. To heal. And she was doing just that." Lamenting the heinous act that cut short a life dedicated to service, Angela stated: "But now, that dream, our Fortune's dream, has been violently, senselessly, stolen from us all." In a heart-wrenching conclusion, she expressed sorrow for the irreplaceable loss for Dr Gomo's child and family: "A child will now grow up without the love and presence of a mother. A family will mourn a daughter who once lit up their home with hope and promise." Ms Machonesa revealed that her paths diverged from Dr Gomo after they completed their studies. Dr Gomo, an environmental and water resources scientist, had expertise in areas such as water management, environmental sustainability, and policy creation. Professor Seaton shared his condolences, noting: "It will be particularly distressing for those who knew and worked with Fortune throughout her time here at the university, and for all of those in our close-knit community of African colleagues and students." A legal report is to be presented to the Procurator Fiscal, while the apprehended man is set to face Dundee Sheriff Court on Monday. Detective Superintendent Peter Sharp, leading the investigation, conveyed his sympathy towards Dr Gomo's loved ones. Sharp asked for the family's privacy during this time, stating: "They are being supported by specialist officers and I would ask that their privacy is respected,". Furthermore, Det Supt Sharp stated: "Our enquiries are continuing and I remain satisfied that the incident poses no wider risk to the public. Cancer doctor blames Covid after downloading sick images of children

A top cancer doctor has blamed the coronavirus pandemic for making him exhausted after he was caught downloading explicit images of underage girls - some as young as four. Police raided Struch's apartment in Hitch Quay, Wandsworth, south London, after a sting operation which caught him chatting to an undercover officer concerning his interest in girls aged four years old and up, The Mirror reports. When his address was searched, the doctor was seen attempting to tamper with or destroy a memory stick on which images were found, prosecutor Jonathan Gold told Kingston-upon-Thames Crown Court. The prosecutor said: "His address was searched and he was seen attempting to tamper with or destroy a memory stick on which images were found along with a white iPhone. There are some aggravating features, the ages of some of the children are quite young, some are as young as four years-old." The court heard that Sturch's mental health deteriorated while working on the medical frontline of the Covid-19 pandemic - and Simon Ray KC, defending, told Judge Anne Brown: "The General Medical Council (GMC) are aware and a custodial sentence would almost certainly end his career, but not if you follow the recommendation of the pre-sentence report of a community sentence." The doctor, who hasn't returned to work at King's College Hospital, Camberwell, said he feels "appalled, crushed and overwhelmed by remorse and shame. His KC reminded the court that Sturch's offending was purely online and didn't involve physical contact with children. The barrister said Sturch still has ambitions to return to the medical profession "There is nothing professionally that brings him into contact with children. His speciality is very much adult men," said Mr Ray. "He was working to exhaustion to save lives during the Covid-19 pandemic and he has dedicated his life to the care of others. "This frontline work on the Covid ward contributed to his mental disintegration that led to the commission of these offences. "He is a consultant urological surgeon with a speciality in prostate cancer, undertaking life-saving procedures. He has skills that are rare. If ever there was a case where the court can be sure offences will not be repeated its is this one. "The effect on the defendant losing his career and everything he has worked for would be devastating. Work is his identity and it is something he has worked on all of his life," added Mr Ray. "If the defendant is struck-off it would be a personal tragedy and the NHS would lose a talented surgeon." Judge Brown sentenced Sturch to six months imprisonment, suspended for eighteen months, which includes thirty days of a rehabilitation activity requirement. He will also be under Probation Service supervision for eighteen months, must sign the sex offenders register for seven years and was made subject to a seven-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which restricts his internet use, plus further conditions. "There were children under obvious distress and I will not go into details in open court," announced Judge Brown. "We must take the age and vulnerability of the children into account. It is not for me to second-guess the GMC. I have to decide if there is an alternative to a custodial sentence. "I do not think it is helpful to guess what the GMC will do in the future. I don't know their work," said the judge. "By the time the police came to his flat he was no longer going to work," said Mr Ray. "The police body worn camera presents a powerful image of where he was at the time in his life. His state and the state of his flat." The defence submitted medical reports revealed Sturch had a depressive disorder that led to "poor judgement and impulsivity." Mr Ray added: "People can function when they really, really have to, but behind the scenes they are collapsing."
