
State committed on rural economic empowerment through SMJ plan
Published on: Fri, May 30, 2025 Text Size: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor accompanied Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the state-level Kaamatan Festival launch at Hongkod Koisaan Hall, Penampang, on Friday The Sabah state government remains committed to strengthening rural socio-economic development through strategic approaches such as agricultural modernisation, promotion of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and community-based tourism. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor said these efforts are key pillars under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development plan aimed at ensuring inclusive and comprehensive well-being for the people. 'Rural communities must continue to be given economic opportunities through modern agriculture, community tourism, or skills training not only to boost income but also to reduce poverty in Sabah,' he said. He said this during the State-level Kaamatan Festival 2025 officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today. Hajiji also highlighted plans to reactivate the Sabah Paddy and Rice Board to support food security, targeting a 30pc rice self-sufficiency level by next year and 60pc by 2030. PM Anwar: Reform WTO to protect fair policy space for developing nations
RIO DE JANEIRO, July 7 — Malaysia fully supports a comprehensive reform of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. According to him, there is a need to breathe new life into the organisation so it can better navigate issues such as artificial intelligence, digital trade, and climate policy in the future. '(This should be done) without restricting the fair policy space of developing countries,' he said after meeting with WTO Director-General Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala here today (Monday in Malaysia). The meeting in Brazil's second-largest city was held to discuss the organisation's role in addressing current global trade challenges. 'I reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to multilateralism and the need for the WTO to remain inclusive, effective, and responsive,' he added. Anwar and Okonjo-Iweala are in Rio de Janeiro to attend the 17th Brics Leaders' Summit. Okonjo-Iweala is a Nigerian economist who has served as the WTO Director-General since March 2021. She is the first woman and first African to lead the WTO as Director-General. Anwar arrived here on Saturday at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to attend the summit, which is being held from July 6–7. — Bernama

KUALA TERENGGANU, July 7 (Bernama) -- The Terengganu State Assembly today congratulated the Malaysian Parliament for successfully hosting the 46th ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA). State Assembly Speaker Datuk Mohd Nor Hamzah said the 46th AIPA, organised in conjunction with the 46th ASEAN Summit chaired by Malaysia, was conducted in an orderly, dignified, and commendable manner. 'The House records its full support for this outstanding initiative and prays that the 46th AIPA General Assembly achieves resounding success, further enhancing the stature of Malaysia's legislative institutions at both the regional and international levels," he said in his opening speech at the second meeting of the third term of the 15th State Assembly here today. He said that since the beginning of this year, Malaysia has successfully organised several significant AIPA-related meetings, including the Fourth Meeting of the Coordinating Committee of Women Parliamentarians of AIPA (WAIPA) in Sarawak last April, the Second AIPA Young Parliamentarians Consultation Meeting in Selangor last May, and the AIPA Advisory Council on Dangerous Drugs (AIPACODD) Meeting in Pahang last June. 'These meetings serve as important platforms to deliberate on key issues, such as the role of women and youth, social security, drug-related challenges, and policy coordination that promotes inclusive development and a sustainable ASEAN,' he said. Anwar, South African President hold bilateral talks on expanding strategic cooperation
RIO DE JANEIRO: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim held a bilateral meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa today. The meeting provided both leaders an opportunity to reassess various forms of cooperation across multiple sectors, as well as to chart new strategies to expand strategic investments in agriculture, automotive, tourism and the halal industry. "I expressed my appreciation for South Africa's firm support for the Palestinian struggle, including their efforts at the International Court of Justice (ICJ)," Anwar said. He added that Malaysia is committed to strengthening ties with South Africa as a key trading partner on the African continent, in line with the spirit of South-South solidarity and Madani cooperation across continents. "I also extended an invitation to President Ramaphosa to attend the Asean Summit this October, and expressed my gratitude for the invitation for Malaysia to attend the G20 Summit in South Africa this November." Anwar is currently in Brazil to attend the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit.
