Trinidad and Tobago gives top honor to Indian PM Modi
Modi arrived Friday in the country, where more than a third of the population is of Indian descent.
President Christine Carla Kangaloo gave him the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago at a ceremony at President's House in St Ann's, just outside the capital Port of Spain -- the first time a foreign leader was so honored.
"This honor is a symbol of the deep and eternal friendship between our two countries," Modi said, according to an official translation.
Relations between India and Trinidad and Tobago date back to 1845, when indentured Indian laborers first arrived to work on sugar and cocoa plantations under British colonial rule, following the end of slavery.
Between 1845 and 1917, more than 140,000 laborers settled in the Caribbean nation.
The Indian community is now the country's largest ethnic group, at 35.4 percent of the population of 1.4 million. Black Trinidadians are the second largest group at 34.2 percent.
"It is a matter of great pride that the Indian community here continues to preserve our shared traditions, culture and customs with such care and devotion," Modi said.
He called Kangaloo and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar "the biggest brand ambassadors of this community."
"Our relationship carries the excitement of cricket and the flavor of Trinidad pepper," Modi said, calling Trinidad and Tobago a vital partner for New Delhi.
"India and Trinidad & Tobago rose from the shadows of colonial rule to write our destiny of progress. Our nations stand tall as proud democracies and pillars of strength in the modern world," Modi wrote on X.
"It's high time we all work together to give the Global South its rightful seat at the high table."
During his time in Port of Spain, Modi addressed the Trinidadian parliament and signed memorandums of understanding with Persad-Bissessar.
Devant Maharaj, a former government minister and leader of the nation's largest Hindu organization, called Modi a "hero" and hailed the visit.
But Trinidad's largest Muslim organization questioned the decision to honor Modi, citing his human rights record.
He will next visit Argentina and Brazil, where a BRICS summit will take place on Sunday and Monday.

Probe Substantiates Allegations Against WEF's Schwab, SZ Reports
Initial findings from an investigation into World Economic Forum founder Klaus Schwab's conduct at the organization he led for more than 50 years appear to support allegations that he manipulated economic reports published by the forum and submitted unjustifiably high expenses, Switzerland's SonntagsZeitung reported on Sunday. According to excerpts seen by the newspaper, law firm Homburger found that Schwab repeatedly intervened to influence country rankings in the WEF's Global Competitiveness Report for political purposes, the newspaper reported, citing excerpts it had seen. In one 2017 email to then-managing director Richard Samans, Schwab allegedly requested that the report be withheld to avoid straining his relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, due to the country's poor performance in the ranking, SonntagsZeitung said. Schwab also advised against improving the UK's place to prevent it being exploited by the supporters of Brexit, the newspaper said.

Colombia's Petro visits Haiti to help bolster security amid gang violence
Colombian President Gustavo Petro has travelled to Haiti for the second time this year in a significant show of support, as spiralling gang violence continues to plague the Caribbean country. Petro's visit, which began Friday, has focused on talks on security, commerce, education, agriculture and the fight against drug trafficking, the Colombian government said. Petro announced the opening of a Colombian embassy in the country's capital of Port-au-Prince. He has also pledged to help Haiti strengthen its security, offering to train Haitian officers. Haitian delegations have visited a state-owned arms manufacturing company in Colombia to learn about its defence capabilities. The Colombian government shared a brief clip of Petro speaking at the new embassy: 'The time has come to truly unite.' Translation: Finally, we have an embassy in Haiti. What forces in the Foreign Ministry were preventing the establishment of an embassy in the country from which our independence originated? Could it be because our freedom came from the Black slaves who liberated themselves? Petro landed in Port-au-Prince, where 90 percent of the capital is under gang control. During his visit, Petro met with Haiti's Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime and its transitional presidential council, which is under pressure to hold general elections before February 2026. The officials arrived less than a week after Haitian authorities killed four suspected drug traffickers and confiscated more than 1,000kg (2,300lb) of cocaine off the country's north coast. The seizure was unexpectedly large for Haiti's National Police, which remains understaffed and underfunded as it works with Kenyan police leading a United Nations-backed mission to help quell gang most of the violence is centred in Port-au-Prince, gangs have razed and seized control of a growing number of towns in Haiti's central region. At least 4,864 people have been killed from October to the end of June across Haiti, with hundreds of others kidnapped, raped and trafficked, according to a recent UN report. The two countries are additionally strengthening their ties as judges in Haiti continue to interrogate 17 former Colombian soldiers accused in the July 2021 killing of President Jovenel Moise.
