Why the FA Cup final is not being played on the final weekend of the season
Man City and Crystal Palace meet at Wembley this weekend with a new six-year deal between the FA and Premier League changing the date of the traditional climax to the English season
The FA Cup final was traditionally the climax to the English domestic football season - and the biggest game of the campaign. But this year Manchester City against Crystal Palace is squeezed in between Premier League fixtures on Friday and Sunday on the penultimate weekend of the season.
And get used to it because this is the first season of a six-year deal between the FA and Premier League agreed in April last year. There have been no replays this season - and the fifth round returned to a weekend after being played in midweek for the last five seasons.
But as part of the £133m per-season deal to support grassroots football, this year's FA Cup final will played the week before the end of the season until at least 2030.
There will be no Premier League games on Saturday. But the agreement not to stage top-flight league games on the Friday night before has been ripped up to move the Chelsea v Manchester United men's fixture to avoid it clashing with Sunday's FA Cup final. And this has seen the other Europa League finalists Tottenham getting their game against Aston Villa shifted to the same slot.
The FA Cup final used to have a traditional 3pm kickoff time preceded by hours of build-up for one of the few games then shown on terrestrial television. Now it is at 4.30pm - and the start is only earlier to not clash with BBC 's coverage of the Eurovision contest.
Despite the attraction of the Premier League and extended European competitions, the all Manchester final last season still had 8m viewers in the UK alone.
And speaking at the announcement of the new deal in April last year, FA chief executive Mark Bullingham insisted his organisation were protecting 'the magic of the Cup'.
He said: "The Emirates FA Cup is our biggest asset and generates over 60 per cent of our revenue to invest into the game, so it is critical to secure a strong format for the future.
"This new agreement between the FA and the Premier League strengthens the Emirates FA Cup and gives this very special tournament exclusive weekends in an increasingly busy calendar.
"The new schedule ensures the magic of the Cup is protected and enhanced, while working for the whole of the English game. The longer summer period also allows a much-needed player break before the start of the next season.
"We have also agreed new funding for the grassroots game, disability football and the women's and girls' game. All football begins at the grassroots, and this is recognised by the Premier League with very welcome additional financial support."

Chelsea battling Premier League rivals for Joao Pedro after bid rejected
Joao Pedro has thrived for Brighton in the Premier League since joining from Watford but the Seagulls face a tall order to keep hold of the Brazilian international Chelsea are battling it out with Newcastle to sign Brighton striker Joao Pedro. Newcastle have already had a £50m-plus bid turned down by Brighton who will not allow the Brazil international to go on the cheap. Chelsea are also keen and have held discussions over signing the 23-year-old who would add options and versatility to their forward line. That would raise serious question marks over the futures of Christopher Nkunku who has been heavily linked with Manchester United and also Nicolas Jackson. Jackson was sent off in the Club World Cup which means he has been serving a ban in two separate competitions after missing the end of the Premier League season after getting a red card. Brighton have rejected bids from two separate Premier League clubs with Liverpool and Arsenal also having been linked with the versatile forward who can play through the middle and wide. Chelsea have held discussions but are now pushing to get a deal done and it remains to be seen whether they can agree a deal. Chelsea have been very active in this window as they are still looking to get a deal done for Borussia Dortmund 's Jamie Gittens. Brighton signed Pedro from Watford in a deal worth around £30m in the summer of 2023 and will want to get a big profit. Pedro, who has scored 30 goals in 70 Albion appearances, is a long-term target of Newcastle as who were also keen in 2022. But now Newcastle face a fight on their hands with Chelsea and other Premier League clubs keen on the Brazilian. Pedro was banished from Fabian Hurzeler's squad for the final two Premier League matches of the season following an alleged training ground spat with Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke. Now his future could be elsewhere if anyone can meet Brighton's price. Earlier this month, Brighton boss Hurzeler suggested he expects to have Joao Pedro and Kaoru Mitoma back for pre-season training. Mitoma was the subject of interest from the Saudi Pro League last season but ended up staying put. "For sure. I'm really looking forward for both of them," the boss tols Sky Sports. "They're great players and they helped us a lot last season. They're expected to be back next week." Brighton have already spent big this summer, with Greek striker Charalampos Kostoulas joining from Olympiacos for around £30m. Tommy Watson and Diego Coppola have also completed moves, from Sunderland and Verona respectively. "I think they all have great potential. We keep doing our way, signing young players with big potential and trying to develop them," Hurzeler added. "That's what we'll try to do with these new signings and I'm sure they will make us better." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Crystal Palace set new price for Liverpool and Arsenal to sign Marc Guehi
Crystal Palace have reportedly set a new price tag for Marc Guehi as Liverpool step up their interest in the England star. Following their Premier League triumph, Liverpool have been splashing the cash this summer, bringing in Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong for just shy of £200million. They could yet sign a striker but their priority is to bring in a new centre-back with England U21 star Jarell Quansah set to join Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth £35m. The situation is somewhat pressing as Arne Slot only has three senior centre-backs, namely Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate, with the latter out of contract next summer and talks over a new deal not progressing. Guehi has emerged as their top target after captaining Palace to their best ever Premier League season and FA Cup glory in 2024/25 and, according to the Mirror, the Reds will open talks with the Eagles and the player this weekend. Arsenal are also interested in the 24-year-old who has entered the last 12 months of his contract and was the subject of big money bids from Newcastle and Tottenham last season The Magpies failed to meet Palace's £70m valuation last summer and while Spurs did, their offer came far too late in the January window to be considered. While it is said Guehi is willing to run down his deal if a prospective buyer does not guarantee regular first-team football, Palace do not wish to lose such a valuable asset on a free transfer. The report adds that Oliver Glasner's side still value the defender at £70m but know that no club will bid that given his contract situation. More Trending As a result they now want at least £40m but will hold out for as much as possible given that Chelsea have a 20 per cent sell-on clause in his contract. The Blues sold their academy graduate to Palace in 2021 for £18m and have been linked with re-signing him in the past, but their interest has cooled of late. If Guehi does move to Anfield his first game for his new club will, ironically, be against his old one, with Liverpool taking on Crystal Palace in the Community Shield on August 10. The south Londoners are also bracing themselves for Arsenal or Tottenham to make a bid for talisman Eberechi Eze, who has a £68million release clause.
