EastEnders' Heather Peace, 50, reveals both she and wife Ellie Dickinson are battling breast cancer in heartbreaking admission

Daily Mail12 hours ago
EastEnders star Heather Peace has revealed she and her wife Ellie Dickinson have both been battling breast cancer in a heartbreaking admission.
The 50-year-old, best known for her role as Eve Sopal-Unwin in the BBC soap, announced last month she'd undergone surgery and was going through chemotherapy following her diagnosis in October.
Now, as she begins radiotherapy, Heather shared how Ellie received the same devastating diagnosis earlier this year.
In a new interview with the Mirror, she said: 'Her breast cancer was a smaller, aggressive lump, so she had a lumpectomy and then radiotherapy.
'Of course then I come along with my 12 cm lump, absolutely ginormous, and mastectomy, chemotherapy, just about to go into radiotherapy.
'She's like "Even that you have to do bigger." It's like "Hold my beer."'
The couple, parents to Annie, 10, and eight-year-old twins Jesse and Lola, admitted the news was overwhelming as there was 'no processing'.
Heather was originally reluctant to see a doctor after noticing a change in her nipple due to her busy EastEnders filming schedule.
However, Ellie encouraged her to get checked straight away, and the actress was diagnosed with the disease just three hours after her appointment.
In May, Heather revealed her secret battle with breast cancer.
She told her Instagram followers she has completed chemotherapy and feels 'very lucky' following months of treatment.
Sharing the clip alongside a lengthy caption on Sunday, she wrote: 'This video is an important part of my recent journey, which I wanted to share with you.
'I've been on quite a road for many months now. I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the beginning of October.
'Since then I've undergone surgery and recovery over the Christmas period and today my chemotherapy journey ended. To conclude – I've just picked up my medal.'
Heather was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2023, and has continued working on EastEnders throughout parts of her treatment.
In her video, which featured the actress being fitted with a wig, she thanked the production team and highlighted the support of those around her, while revealing she has needed a wig fitted during her health fight.
'There have been so many positives,' she said. 'Thank you to the whole EE team for going above and beyond. Particularly our amazing makeup team.
'And to Alex Rouss for the original wig and (stylist) Linda for the spot on cut. I've felt totally supported by you all.'
Heather also expressed gratitude for her family, praising her wife Ellie and their three daughters – Annie, Jessie and Lola – for their love and encouragement.
She said: 'There have been so many positives… Just trying to appreciate every moment of them.'
Heather went on to extend heartfelt thanks to medical staff who cared for her.
'Thank you to the NHS. You are wonderful, skilled people. You treated me efficiently. You gave me dignity and showed me kindness. It's so appreciated,' she said.
Heather concluded her post by reflecting on how her health fight had changed her, adding: 'Life feels very different now, but it's wonderful.
'I will continue to cherish and be grateful for all I am blessed with. I feel very lucky. With love, Heater.'
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world and affects more than two MILLION women a year
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world. Each year in the UK there are more than 55,000 new cases, and the disease claims the lives of 11,500 women. In the US, it strikes 266,000 each year and kills 40,000. But what causes it and how can it be treated?
What is breast cancer?
It comes from a cancerous cell which develops in the lining of a duct or lobule in one of the breasts.
When the breast cancer has spread into surrounding tissue it is called 'invasive'. Some people are diagnosed with 'carcinoma in situ', where no cancer cells have grown beyond the duct or lobule.
Most cases develop in those over the age of 50 but younger women are sometimes affected. Breast cancer can develop in men, though this is rare.
Staging indicates how big the cancer is and whether it has spread. Stage 1 is the earliest stage and stage 4 means the cancer has spread to another part of the body.
The cancerous cells are graded from low, which means a slow growth, to high, which is fast-growing. High-grade cancers are more likely to come back after they have first been treated.
What causes breast cancer?
A cancerous tumour starts from one abnormal cell. The exact reason why a cell becomes cancerous is unclear. It is thought that something damages or alters certain genes in the cell. This makes the cell abnormal and multiply 'out of control'.
Although breast cancer can develop for no apparent reason, there are some risk factors that can increase the chance, such as genetics.
What are the symptoms of breast cancer?
The usual first symptom is a painless lump in the breast, although most are not cancerous and are fluid filled cysts, which are benign.
The first place that breast cancer usually spreads to is the lymph nodes in the armpit. If this occurs you will develop a swelling or lump in an armpit.
How is breast cancer diagnosed?
Initial assessment: A doctor examines the breasts and armpits. They may do tests such as a mammography, a special x-ray of the breast tissue which can indicate the possibility of tumours.
Biopsy: A biopsy is when a small sample of tissue is removed from a part of the body. The sample is then examined under a microscope to look for abnormal cells. The sample can confirm or rule out cancer.
If you are confirmed to have breast cancer, further tests may be needed to assess if it has spread. For example, blood tests, an ultrasound scan of the liver or a chest X-ray.
How is breast cancer treated?
Treatment options which may be considered include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and hormone treatment. Often a combination of two or more of these treatments are used.
Surgery: Breast-conserving surgery or the removal of the affected breast depending on the size of the tumour.
Radiotherapy: A treatment which uses high energy beams of radiation focused on cancerous tissue. This kills cancer cells, or stops them from multiplying. It is mainly used in addition to surgery.
Chemotherapy: A treatment of cancer by using anti-cancer drugs which kill cancer cells, or stop them from multiplying.
Hormone treatments: Some types of breast cancer are affected by the 'female' hormone oestrogen, which can stimulate the cancer cells to divide and multiply. Treatments which reduce the level of these hormones, or prevent them from working, are commonly used in people with breast cancer.
How successful is treatment?
The outlook is best in those who are diagnosed when the cancer is still small, and has not spread. Surgical removal of a tumour in an early stage may then give a good chance of cure.
The routine mammography offered to women between the ages of 50 and 71 means more breast cancers are being diagnosed and treated at an early stage.

Major soap savagely rejects Matt Lucas after Little Britain star asks for role

Little Britain star, Matt Lucas, has revealed he once asked Coronation Street bosses if he could be on the soap as new character, Teddy Pink, but admitted they 'didn't bite' Matt Lucas has admitted he desperately wanted to be on Coronation Street, but was savagely snubbed by the soap's bosses. The Little Britain star is one of the most recognisable faces on TV and has a legion of loyal fans, who have followed his impressive career since making his debut on Shooting Stars as giant baby, George Dawes, in the nineties. Matt, 51, has appeared on a string of shows over the years, but Corrie has always eluded him after he revealed his plans to rock up on the cobbles as new character, Teddy Pink, were shot down by the powers that be. Chatting to his friend and fellow comic David Walliams, 53, on the latest episode of their Making a Scene podcast, Matt said: "I would like to be in Coronation Street because I feel like that's the sort of funniest of the soaps." ‌ ‌ He continued: "And I've always wanted to be - and I told the people of Corrie this years ago, they didn't bite - someone that goes into the hairdresser and sits down and has a haircut, even though I have no hair. "And I've always wanted to be called Teddy Pink. And I said, 'I'll be in Coronation Street as long as I'm called Teddy Pink.'" David, who starred with Matt in Little Britain and Come Fly With Me, has had more success in soap land. He appeared in an episode of EastEnders in 2003 as Ray Collins - the fake registrar who performed Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) and Alfie Moon's (Shane Richie) wedding in the Queen Vic pub on Christmas Day. Telling Matt he wanted to reprise his role, he said: "I played a character in 2003 in EastEnders, marrying Kat and Alfie in the Queen Vic in front of all the characters. So I was super excited. So I've been in EastEnders. And one day, I would like to come back as that character. "Sometimes comes up, EastEnders are celebrating an anniversary or something. They'll write down people who've gone on to different things from the show. So yeah, I loved it actually." Speaking about his excitement working with late stars June Brown (Dot Cotton) and Wendy Richard (Pauline Fowler), David could not contain his excitement. ‌ He gushed: "I was so starstruck, particularly by June Brown. I was so starstruck. And she was obviously different from the character, but she was dressed as Dot and smoking away in the dressing room." He continued: "And also Wendy Richard, I was incredibly starstruck by because we've grown up with her in Are You Being Served? It's Miss Brahms. She was very sexy. Had a massive crush on her then." ‌ While Matt may not have appeared in any British soaps, he did rock up in Aussie staple, Neighbours, along with David in 2007. The pair starred as their Little Britain characters, Lou Todd and his friend Andy Pipkin - who unbeknown to Lou pretends to need a wheelchair. The hilarious scene saw Matt and David roll up in the Scarlet Bar alongside characters Steph and Toadie, played by Carla Bonner and Toadfish legend, Ryan Moloney, and had viewers both here and Down Under in stitches.

BBC pulls more than 10 shows from schedule – and some won't return for weeks

Wimbledon and Women's Euro matches have led to schedule changes on the BBC this month, with the likes of EastEnders and the One Show among the numerous TV shows affected A number of BBC shows have been affected by a change to TV schedules this month. The broadcaster is once again providing viewers with coverage of Wimbledon, alongside airing several of this year's Women's Euro football matches, too. The tennis tournament started on Monday and is set to conclude next Sunday (July 13), with it continuing to affect the schedule until then. Meanwhile, the football championship instead kicked off yesterday and that will continue until July 27. ‌ Wimbledon coverage is alternating between BBC One and BBC Two this year. The Women's Euro is instead being split between the BBC and ITV, though the final later this month will be available to fans through both broadcasters. ‌ Last week it was announced that the One Show, which airs at 7pm on weeknights, has been dropped from the BBC's schedule for four weeks amid coverage of the two sporting championships. The show is set to return from July 28. It isn't the only show affected though. EastEnders episodes aired as double-bills on BBC Two on Monday and Tuesday this week amid Wimbledon's return. There now won't be any new episodes of the soap until next Wednesday (July 9). There is set to be further changes to EastEnders' schedule later in the month though as a result of the Women's Euros. Two episodes will air on July 15 ahead of its slot the following evening being taken up by a match. There will be no episode on July 17 either, though one will air on July 18 instead. Wimbledon has also taken over BBC One's afternoon slots. It means that Escape to the Country, Pointless, Bridge Of Lies and Garden Rescue aren't airing at the moment, with all four shows set to return to the channel on July 14. ‌ BBC Two's the Edge, Unbeatable, Richard Osman 's House Of Games and Robson Green 's Weekend Escapes are also missing from the schedule until that date. Similarly, Flog It won't air on the channel on a weekday until July 14 either. Several other shows are also missing from the schedule. Absences at the moment include Lightning, Murder, Mystery and My Family, Weatherman Walking and Hidden Treasures of the National Trust, which typically have afternoon slots. ‌ The One Show is understood to be the most affected by the schedule changes. Host Alex Jones announced that the show would be taking a month-long break at the end of the last episode, which was broadcast on Friday. She told viewers: "We are taking a bit of a break for the next four weeks and we'll be back on Monday the 28th of July. But there's plenty to enjoy like Wimbledon and the Euros." A message in the credits reminded of its return date. Wimbledon is airing today on BBC One from 2pm to 7pm. It will then continue after BBC News from 8pm until 10pm tonight. Whilst the Women's Euro match between Belgium and Italy will air on BBC Two from 4.30pm, with some occasional Wimbledon coverage on that channel today too.
