Brisbane trainer Rob Heathcote eyes Melbourne spring targets for grand campaigner Rothfire
Having stabled the Stradbroke Handicap winner War Machine for the Hayes team, Brisbane trainer Rob Heathcote hopes the three brothers can return the favour this spring when he likely takes his old gladiator Rothfire to Melbourne to hunt Group 1 glory.
The seven-year-old gelding had a horrible lead-up to the $3m Stradbroke over 1400m at Eagle Farm last Saturday.
Firstly, the 2020 JJ Atkins champion suffered a stone bruise just 10 days before Queensland's premier race and battled to even make the field.
He was forced to run on a firm track – his least favourite surface – and then champion jockey James McDonald was sick during the week and was unable to ride Rothfire at 55.5kg, meaning Craig Williams received a late call-up.
Heathcote watched and heard a few horses galloping on the firm track early in the morning on Stradbroke Day and said he immediately thought 'oh, I'm in trouble here'.
He contemplated scratching his stable star but opted to push on, with Rothfire running seventh, just three lengths behind the Ben, Will and JD Hayes -trained favourite War Machine.
In another slice of bad luck, Williams copped a two-week suspension for careless riding in the Straddie.

'The good news is that Rothfire has pulled up fine and will go to the paddock now,' Heathcote said.
'He's done his job. I mean his run was huge and unfortunately for him, the track was just too firm.
'He was charging to the line and then he just feels that track. As Craig said, he could feel him wanting to let down but he just couldn't.
'He'll have a break now and I'll have a very close study of available races.
'I'm not really sure what races I'll target but obviously there are plenty of Group 1 s and he races well at Moonee Valley.
'I've now got to look at races with a bit of give in the ground.'

Heathcote could possibly send Rothfire to the $750,000 Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) and then into the $2m Manikato Stakes (1200m), both at The Valley in September.
'I'd like him to have a two or three-run prep, either in Sydney or Melbourne,' said Heathcote, who won the 2013 Manikato with his superstar Buffering.
'The advantage with me going to Melbourne is that I have a good relationship with the Hayes boys.
'Their Stradbroke winner (War Machine) stayed with me. He was stabled not far from Rothfire.
'The boys were pretty happy, Ben (Hayes) was at my stable on Sunday morning.'

Heathcote believed that Rothfire would have 'gone close' to winning the Stradbroke if not for the untimely injury, which put the tough-as-nails gelding out of work for several days.
'He's been such a wonderful horse,' Heathcote said of the 'Thriller from Chinchilla', who fought back from a potentially career-ending sesamoid injury in 2020.
'If he didn't have that stone bruise he would've gone close (to winning the Stradbroke).
'I had even considered scratching Rothfire. But his run was huge and full of courage on a track too firm, plus he missed that bit of work.'
Rothfire has shown his trademark grit in his three races this campaign - an impressive fourth in the Group 2 Victory Stakes, a tremendous runner-up finish to star mare Sunshine In Paris in the Doomben 10,000 major and finally his Stradbroke result when he had excuses.

Taree preview: ‘Big Red' is in the black
TRAINER Jake Hull will break the seal on the latest 'limited edition' foal by the unheralded and underrated stallion Red Henno at Taree on Monday. Hull's hitherto unraced filly Diva Rouge is one of only 15 named foals sired by the former Michael Tubman-trained now 12-year-old stallion, Red Henno. Red Henno has been on stud duties, albeit light ones, since the 2020 season. In that time, the stallion has fathered a total of a mere 37 foals, 15 of them named, and most of those sent Hull's way via owner/breeder – John O'Connor. 'Red Henno had three horses to the races, two of them have won and one of the others ran second so he is building a nice little record,'' Hull said. '(Offspring) Red Spectre won impressively and Rebellious Red won impressively, Qui Rouge has run a couple of seconds and is knocking on the door.' While Red Henno isn't quite a 'revelation' as yet, his early success has come as no surprise to his chief backer O'Connor and trainer Hull. 'He is by Redoute's Choice out of Kishkat so he's as well bred as good as any of them and it was just a shame that he carried injuries in his career, I am sure he could have had a lot better record than what he had,'' Hull said. Red Henno's next opportunity to add one more winner to the tally comes in Monday's opener at Taree via O'Connor's home-bred Diva Rouge who is the sixth foal out of the one-time Warwick Farm winning mare Go Diva Go. 'The horses we have had out of the mare have all been quite quick and won their fair share of races,'' Hull said. 'Diva Rouge has done everything right so far. 'I am not sure how much ability she has got, but I am happy enough with her work and her trials leading into her first attempt. 'She shows a bit of gate speed, she travels well, and she seems to have a bit more up her sleeve. 'I am not afraid to take on a heavy track if it's that wet on Monday, personally I think it will only be to her advantage.' Diva Rouge will be ridden by Ben Looker who shares an extraordinary 31.4 per cent winning strike rate with his former jockey's room colleague and long time friend, Gosford-based Hull. Diva Rouge will have company on Monday's 500km round-trip from her much older stablemate Browned Off which has made the trek himself twice before with success. The son of Australian Guineas winner Wandjina is almost 12 months without a win but to be fair has only raced three times since that Grafton victory on June 8 last year. 'He likes the track and the distance, he has raced there twice for a win and a third,'' Hull said. 'He is definitely hot and cold but he could run okay at the odds. 'He is an older horse and he is limited but he'll head round there and hopefully he can find his old form.' Browned Off can lay claim to one of the most intriguing pedigrees imaginable. His ninth dam was by The Welkin out of imported British mare, Light. If that doesn't give any clue as to her majesty, her name certainly will – Gloaming's Sister. A winner of the first ever AJC Kirkham Stakes in 1925, Gloaming Sister was foaled eight year after her namesake, Gloaming, who won 57 of his 69 races. He was second on every other occasion barring the one time when he fell after becoming tangled up in the starting tape.

Can forgive him for last start at Port Macquarie, it wasn't a bad run as it stands, and we could argue it was a better race than this one. Squatternut Bosh drew wide and was scratched from Coffs Harbour on Sunday. Wise move given she has barrier 4 in a very winnable race it seems. Birdy Girl flew home last start. B e t: Montgolfier to win, exacta 2 to beat 9. Navy Pier was scratched from an unusually strong maiden at Newcastle on Saturday and instead finds himself in an unusually weak looking maiden. He's also got barrier 3 and city-class jockey Ben Osmond to steer. Was off the map on debut, lost, spelled and has trialled well ahead of the return. Not that he is over the line but frankly there is almost nowhere else to look here. That being the case, expect very short odds about him. Navy Pier to win. Charleroi has been nominated for two races in the next few days. If he comes to Taree, he'll be very hard to beat on his form, let alone the prized draw. If he is out, all roads lead to Annoint  which has only managed one win in his 19 starts but importantly, it was at this very same track and distance. Likes the sting out too. Bellini Spritz is itching to get to a mile you would think being a Dundeel from the great family of Ethereal. Bet: Charleroi  to win or if scratched Annoint each-way. Jonny Be Swift has been to Taree twice, over this same trip too as it happens, winning one and running third at the other. Important to note that Aaron Bullock ride him when he won his maiden here and what's more, it was a heavy track. Fit horse just needs some luck early on from the wide alley. Merapi has drawn in close and barring any adverse track pattern on the day, surely it gives this mudlark her best chance to perform. Bet: Jonny Be Swift  to win, Merapi each-way, quinella 3,11. Full Commitment wears the same colours as Saturday's deserved Highway winner, Red Rags To Bulls. Like a lot of the Jeremy Gask stable, Full Commitment is a very reliable horse, noted in her record of a win and five placings from 11 starts. Is easy to like apart from the draw. Speaking of draws, assuming the inside is not off for any reason, it could be game on for King Soleil  which will jump from barrier 2 with the key rider booking of Ash Morgan. Savoca is trained by Paul Perry who also trained the sire Choisir and dam The Look. Savoca has mixed and matched it with some good horses when he was climbing the ladder; he was runner-up to Midnight Opal at start two. In terms of Monday, we know he goes well fresh, we know he handles the wet and this is his sort of trip. Smart Jazz is back home on Monday after a rather creditable run in a Highway behind a horse who he was runner-up to at Scone 11-days earlier. Zoom Outcome has a commendable record of six wins, four seconds and a third from his 33 starts which is a good place to start for those considering backing him each-way on Monday. We should also point out that he has a win and two seconds from seven runs at the track and trip and perhaps best of all, all six wins are circa the 1000m. Let's hope it is wet, the wetter the better for him. Telegraph has finished close up behind Zoom Outcome a couple of times in recent outings. He'll be coming home hard again.
