EFL star hit with 13-MATCH ban for 'discriminatory abuse regarding sexual orientation'
League Two midfielder Sam Finley has received a 13-match suspension after he admitted to making an "abusive and/or insulting" comment towards Jamille Matt during a game between Tranmere Rovers and Walsall in January.
The Tranmere star was sent off in the first-half of the game after picking up two yellow cards in quick succession, with Walsall going on to win the game 5-1 after Matt netted a brace.
Finley has also been hit with a £2,000 fine and is required to complete an education programme following a hearing by the Football Assocation's independent regulatory commission.
An FA statement read: "An independent Regulatory Commission has imposed a 13-match suspension, £2,000 fine and mandatory education programme on Sam Finley for a breach of FA Rule E3 during the EFL League Two fixture between Tranmere Rovers and Walsall on Saturday 11 January 2025.
"It was alleged that the midfielder's language towards a Walsall player around the 23rd minute was abusive and/or insulting and/or improper contrary to FA Rule E3.1. It was further alleged that this constitutes an 'aggravated breach', which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference – whether express or implied – to sexual orientation.
"Sam Finley subsequently admitted the charge against him. The Regulatory Commission imposed his sanctions following a hearing." In a statement, Tranmere said the club "condemns all forms of discrimination and will deal with the matter internally".
Players who are found guilty of an "aggravated breach" of FA rules regarding "abusive, indecent or insulting words or behaviour" typically receive a ban of between six and 12 games. However, Finley has been hit with a 13-match suspension because of previous offences.
The 32-year-old was previously banned for four games and fined £250 back in 2016 after he was found to have made a homophobic comment towards a referee while playing for AFC Fylde.
He also received an eight-match ban and an £850 fine after he was found to have made an offensive comment towards a Rochdale player while he was at Accrington Stanley in 2020.
Tranmere are battling to stay up and currently sit four points above Carlisle United with two league games remaining. They will be back in action on Saturday when they host Crewe Alexandra and Tranmere boss Andy Crosby is confident his side have what it takes to stay up.
"It will be great to be back home on Saturday, the crowd have been amazing with us home and away," Crosby said after Tranmere's 0-0 draw with Barrow on Monday. "We want Prenton Park rocking.
"I want the crowd to be right behind the players. Those feelings aren't going to go away, they're going to intensity, but we've got good players and I want them to play with some freedom, to be themselves, trust themselves, be creative in the final third.
"The players are giving everything. They desperately want to do so well for the club. Eleven games we set out what we wanted to do – no points total, just prepare for the next game, and that's exactly what we'll do for Saturday."

Andy Carroll suffers nightmare Dagenham & Redbridge debut as he's outshone by ‘Triallist B' in 5-1 thrashing
ANDY CARROLL was cheered with every touch on his Dagenham & Redbridge debut - but could not stop a Triallist B-inspired Crawley from running riot. Former England striker Carroll, once the most expensive British player in history, came on just after the hour with his new club 2-1 down. 3 3 3 The few hundred Daggers fans who turned up gave a 'wahey' every time the 36-year-old touched the ball. But League Two Crawley made their superior collective quality pay against their sixth-tier opponents, with three goals - including a late double from a player known only as Triallist B - making it 5-1. Ex-Newcastle and Liverpool striker Carroll had one half-chance with a header, but was always stretching and could not divert it on target. The former £35million man shocked the world of football on Saturday by not only moving to Dagenham but also investing in the East London club too. Earlier this week they confirmed a shock takeover by a Qatari investment group. And it saw Carroll jump on board as he returned to England from France after a spell with fourth-tier Bordeaux. Carroll said: 'I'm really excited to get started with Dagenham. 'My kids thought I was signing for Chelsea — they'll be in for a shock. 'It's a fantastic location and close to my kids, they will be able to come and see me play. 'I really enjoyed my time in Bordeaux but it's time for me to get settled with my family. 'I'm hoping my kids will bring their friends to see me play. ' I didn't want to finish playing football and I'm really excited to get involved in the leadership side and be a player. 'I've got experience in seeing how clubs are run, of all levels. I think I can add value. 'My first job is to go in as a player, I want to get them promoted. 'I was offered clubs with a lot more money, but I realised Dagenham was a project that I really wanted to get into. 'I want to help as many players and staff from my experience and background as possible. 'I was getting offers from clubs in France, Italy and Spain, but I wanted to come home. 'I could sign for a top club, but me and the managers might not see eye to eye, so I just want to be somewhere I'm going to be happy.' THIS IS A DEVELOPING STORY.. Celtic co-operation agreement plans change amid Queens Park problems
Previously spending a staggering £5.7million in the Championship Scotland's oldest senior club need to slash expenditure to around £1million a year. With Queen's unable to commit to a long term tie up, Premiership champions Celtic have now held discussions with Ayr, managed by former Parkhead captain Brown, with midfielder Jude Bonnar expected to be first to move to Somerset Park. The SFA have given clubs the green light to team up to boost the number of first team opportunities for young Scottish players between the ages of 16 and 21. Recent figures from CIES Observatory show that St Mirren offered just 0.8% of their available first team minutes to players aged 21 or under last season. Dundee had the highest figure in the SPFL Premiership with 24.8%. Under the new rules, up to three players can be placed on a co-operation list and allowed to move freely to move between the co-op club and parent club in order to increase their first team experience. Aberdeen have confirmed agreements with League Two Elgin City and Kelty Hearts of League One. Read more from Stephen McGowan: Defenders Dylan Ross and Jamie Mercer have joined City with Lewis Carrol, Joseph Teasdale and Cooper Masson heading to Fife. Director of Football Steven Gunn claims the agreements: 'create a clear pathway for promising young players to gain valuable senior football experience, learn from good professionals and be better prepared for the demands of first team football at Aberdeen.' St Mirren will team up Dumbarton of League Two and Lowland League team Clydebank. Carrick McEvoy, Thomas Falconer and Theo McCormick have already joined Dumbarton while Billy Hutchison has moved to Clydebank. St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson said: "I firmly believe in the loan system to develop our young players and something that hindered that previously was not being able to bring them back at certain stages or leaving yourselves short in numbers. "With the cooperation agreement we are able to get them into men's football and develop under other coaches. Hopefully we can also help the coaches and the clubs they are going to. It will be a great benefit for both parties. "All in all, I believe it's a brilliant way to develop young players in Scotland and doesn't compromise any young players coming back into the first-team." Newly promoted League Two side East Kilbride have also agreed a deal with Hibernian. Goalkeeper Freddie Owens and forward Dean Cleland have already moved to K Park. Rangers are expected to confirm a co-operation agreement with Championship side Raith Rovers.
