Atlanta Dream off to hot start under new coach Karl Smesko and play of Allisha Gray
NEW YORK (AP) — The Atlanta Dream made a lot of moves in the offseason, hiring Karl Smesko from Florida Gulf Coast and bringing in Brittney Griner and Brionna Jones to complement Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray.
So far the moves have paid off as the Dream have the third best record in the league behind Minnesota and New York. Atlanta (8-3) is off to one of the franchise's best marks through 11 games since coming into the league as an expansion team in 2008. The 2016 team also won eight of its first 11 games but then went on to drop its next six games.
Gray has flourished in Smesko's system, shooting a career-high 51% from the field including 42% from behind the 3-point line. She earned the league's Eastern Conference Player of the Month for May.
'I think it's the offense and just finding my shots,' Gray said. 'I feel like Karl puts in an offense and the way he pays attention to the details and really helps me. Tells me if I'm open shoot the ball. Instills that confidence in me, that's been a big part of my success.'
Griner came to the team as a free agent after spending the first 11 seasons with Phoenix after the Mercury drafted her No. 1 in 2013. With so much talent around her she doesn't feel like she has to shoulder the load every night for the Dream to win. In a 33-point victory over Washington on Sunday, she took just four shots. The game before, a rout of Chicago, the 6-foot-8 star took only three shot attempts.

New York and Minnesota both suffered their first losses of the season last week and the Lynx passed the Liberty for the top spot in the poll. Atlanta moved up to third with Phoenix and Seattle the next two. Indiana was sixth with Golden State behind them. Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Washington were next. The WNBA launched a new initiative last week aiming to bring the women's professional game closer to communities by painting the official WNBA 3-point line on park basketball courts across the country. It was debuted in New York on Thursday at a park in Brooklyn.
'I'm excited about what this initiative means in terms of access and representation,' said WNBA Head of League Operations Bethany Donaphin, who grew up in New York. 'I think it's just further evidence of the way that we want to be able to connect with young girls who are inspired by the WNBA.' Player of the week
Gray earned Player of the Week honors for the second time this season. The Dream wing averaged 23.3 points, six rebounds and 4.3 assists to help the team go 3-0 on the week. It was a difficult finish to the 2024-25 season for both the Minnesota Timberwolves and New York Knicks. Both teams fell one round short of a chance to play in the NBA Finals, after losing their respective conference championship series to the Thunder and Pacers. Not only have the MN Timberwolves failed to win a Larry O'Brien Trophy during the franchise's 36-year history, the Wolves have NEVER even been able to sew a patch graphic of one on their jerseys for an NBA Finals series. In a newly released notes piece at longtime NBA insider Ian Begley reports that the New York Knicks are eyeing up Finch — who holds the best winning percentage of any coach in Minnesota Timberwolves history, at .566 (209-160) — along with two other already-employed coaches, Ime Udoka (Rockets) and Jason Kidd (Mavericks). Ime Udoka, Chris Finch, and Jason Kidd are among the coaches currently under contract who the Knicks have degrees of interest in…Kidd, 52, has been the Mavericks' head coach since 2021. Udoka is the head coach of the Rockets, while Finch is the head coach of the Timberwolves…If the Knicks wind up hiring Udoka, Finch, or Kidd, they will be required to send compensation to their former team. What does the NBA prophecy (script?) say about the future of Minnesota Timberwolves leadership? For now, though, Ian believes that Knicks' decision-makers plan to be patient, as they search for an improvement from Tom Thibodeau, who was fired days after coaching New York to their first Eastern Conference Finals since the 1999-2000 season, not to mention two-straight East Semis before that. Now that Marc Lore (along with Alex Rodriguez and a host of billionaire minority investors) are set to take control of the organization this month, however, Connelly has confirmed he's likely in for the long haul too. We also know that Anthony Edwards — freshly equipped with a 5-year, $244.6 million maximum contract extension (which will go up even more when he makes another All-NBA team) that kicked in last season and has four years remaining — is not going anywhere either. Sky's Angel Reese named an WNBA All-Star for 2nd consecutive season
CHICAGO — Angel Reese will be the Chicago Sky's sole representative at WNBA All-Star weekend after her second consecutive selection as a reserve. Reese leads the league in rebounding with 12.6 per game while also averaging 12.4 points and 3.8 assists. Her average of 1.8 steals per game is the fifth-highest in the WNBA. Advertisement This has been a season of growth for Reese, who has been asked to shoulder a larger role as a facilitator in the Sky's new offense under first-year head coach Tyler Marsh. Those new expectations were a challenge at first, and that dynamic was clear through Reese's performance in the first five games when she averaged only 9.1 points per game while logging more turnovers (3.7 per game) than assists (2.6). But in June, things began to click. Reese dropped 17 points against the New York Liberty on June 10. Five days later, she logged a triple-double. And over the last nine games, Reese has averaged 15 points, 12.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists (while giving up 3.2 turnovers) per game, shooting at an improved 47.1% from the floor. 'I struggled in the first couple of games, but I just stayed poised and trusted in my work,' Reese said. 'I have great people in my corner. I never really question my ability or what I can do. (I was) thinking in the beginning, this was going to be my sophomore slump, but I got out of it after my first couple of games, and I'm here and helping the team win as much as I can. That's the most important thing to me.' Advertisement While balancing this new offensive role, Reese has remained a dominant rebounder, averaging 8.3 defensive rebounds and 4.3 offensive rebounds per game. In only her second season with the Sky, Reese is already ninth on the franchise all-time rebounding list with 647 career rebounds after passing Stefanie Dolson in June.
