'I must confess, I had a tear or two'

BBC News25-05-2025
We asked you earlier what you thought of your side's promotion-winning performance on Saturday and, unsurprisingly, it looks like you're feeling pretty pleased with your young squad. Here is what you had to say:Martin: Great day yesterday and hopefully the positive feeling will last. Next season may be hard. Careful recruitment will be needed to improve the squad but maintain the ethos.John: If ever a club deserved to be in the Premier League, it is Sunderland! Phenomenal support base, great stadium and top notch training facilities. Real passion all over the club.Jeff: Greatest night of my 50 years supporting SAFC.....cried my eyes out at the final whistle!!! Need a couple of proven Premier players to give it a real go next season!Craig: This is what Sunderland do: we get written off and ridiculed but slowly, steadily, we keep fighting. The play-off semi and the final were both evidence of that: we should have lost both games but our players (and the fans) wouldn't have it. Hopefully we can do the same next season when we were told we're coming straight back down before we even went up. KTF.Gary: Amazing to see the club finally back up in Premier League. The fans have been amazing and the support was clearly visible on Saturday. The stadium is ready, we just need the investment to enhance the team and keep them up.Chris: What a great achievement, over the moon. Credit to Regis Le Bris for substitutions that changed the game . We kept going To The End. The whole squad and manager are now legends, Premier League here we come.Tommy: Not sure we're ready but we'll give it a go.Alan: Crazy season from such a talented bunch of young players. I knew they had the potential to do it but never in my wildest dreams did I think they would achieve it so soon. Le Bris has done wonders to bond this group together and get them pulling in the right direction. Watch out here we come Prem. Haway the lads.AJT: Someone tell me there was a camera in the dressing room at half time...Unbelievable turnaround from the (actual) lads. Working for each other, sticking to the plan, taking the opportunities when they came. They'll have grown as footballers in those 90 minutes, but they're going to need some help next season. A lot of it.James: I believed from the moment Brown scored that fluke goal against Leeds that anything was possible with this manager and group of players.David: After an awful first half where we were definitely second best, the improvement following the substitutions made by Regis Le Bris brought an immediate impact. We simply got stuck in and had a greater sense of urgency. The spirit of everyone, fans and players alike never diminished and when young Tommy Watson beautifully curled in the winner, the crowd erupted and we knew we were home. At last, I'd been at Wembley and seen my side, whom I've supported for 63 years, win! Our fans were fantastic! It was a privilege to be there and I must confess I had a tear or two in my eyes. It's been a painful eight years, but we're back.

Hurt at Europa League defeat lingered

Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount says the pain of last season's Europa League final defeat by Tottenham lingered well into the started the final in Bilbao but, like many of his team-mates, failed to have a significant impact on the game as Spurs won thanks to a deflected Brennan Johnson result condemned United to only their second season without European football in 35 years following their 15th-placed Premier League finish, their worst performance since the 1973-74 relegation campaign."It took some time, that's for sure," said Mount, speaking at the club's pre-season training camp in Chicago."You're just thinking about little things in the game. I started, so it was like: 'What could I have done in that situation?' Or: 'Could I have made that pass better?'"You would drive yourself crazy, looking into loads of detail, but it hurts. The whole season hurt."

When is England v Spain? Euro 2025 final kick-off time and TV channel

England will get their shot at back-to-back European titles after clawing their way to the Euro 2025 final in Switzerland - and they will face familiar opponents on Sunday. Sarina Wiegman 's side , with Michelle Agyemang's 96th-minute equaliser saving the Lionesses from the brink of elimination. Chloe Kelly then tucked home her penalty rebound in the dying stages of extra time to book England's place in the final, where they will hope to emulate their Wembley heroics of Euro 2022. Kelly was the hero then, too, scoring the extra time winner in a 2-1 triumph over Germany. And England will take on Spain in a sensational rematch of the 2023 World Cup final after Aitana Bonmati's goal in extra time sent the world champions through to their first European final with a 1-0 victory over Germany in Zurich. Spain are looking to follow their World Cup triumph two years ago, where they beat England 1-0 in Sydney, with a first ever Euros title while the Lionesses will be out for revenge as they defend their title. Here's everything you need to know about the Euro 2025 final. When is the Euro 2025 final? The Euro 2025 final between England and Spain will take place on Sunday 27 July in at St Jakob Park, Basel. While kick-off times for the quarter-finals and semi-finals were 8pm, the final will start at 5pm BST (UK time). What TV channel is it on? Viewers will have a choice between BBC One and ITV 1, with both channels providing live coverage of the final. What is the England team news? Lauren James suffered an ankle injury during England's semi-final win against Italy and was forced off at half-time. The forward was later seen with ice on her ankle and Sarina Wiegman confirmed: 'She hurt her ankle. I haven't seen her yet, so I don't what it looks like over the next couple of days. But we had to take her off.' If James is unable to feature in the final, Wiegman could decide to promote Chloe Kelly from the bench after her impact against Sweden and Italy. Or if Wiegman prefers to keep Kelly as an impact substitute, Beth Mead could come into the side. The England manager also suggested that Michelle Agyemang will keep to her own impact role, with Alessia Russo set to start up front. England could be unchanged elsewhere. Esme Morgan made her first major tournament start against Italy and is now likely to feature alongside Leah Williamson in defence, after the England captain recovered from her own ankle injury. Hannah Hampton has impressed in goal while Lucy Bronze and Alex Greenwood will continue as full-backs. England's midfield struggled to move the ball quickly enough against Italy but Keira Walsh, Georgia Stanway and Ella Toone are set to remain in place. Grace Clinton and Aggie Beever-Jones were used off the bench against Italy and will be among Wiegman's options again late in the game. England possible XI: Hampton; Bronze, Williamson, Morgan, Greenwood; Walsh, Stanway; Mead, Toone, Hemp; Russo What is the Spain team news? Centre-back Laia Aleixandri should return in defence alongside Spain captain Irene Parades. Spain will field two Ballon d'Or winners in their midfield three, with Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas joined by the equally excellent Patri Guijarro in an all-Barcelona central unit. Cata Coll made a key double-save to rescue Spain at the end of normal time against Germany and will start in goal, with former Manchester United defender Ona Batlle and Olga Carmona - the scorer of Spain's goal in the 1-0 World Cup final win over England - as full-backs. Esther Gonzalez leads the golden boot standings with four goals so far and will remain Spain's No 9, with Claudia Pina - who scored both of Spain's goals in their 2-1 win over England in June - and Arsenal's Mariona Caldentey likely to join her in attack. Salma Paralluelo has struggled for form and fitness at the Euros but could have a say off the bench later on, while Athenea del Castillo has also made an impact off the bench throughout the tournament. Possible Spain XI: Coll; Batlle, Parades, Aleixandri, Carmona; Guijarro, Bonmati, Putellas; Caldentey, Gonzalez, Pina List of previous Euros winners 2022 - England (2-1 a.e.t vs Germany) 2017 - Netherlands (4-2 vs Denmark) 2013 - Germany (1-0 vs Norway) 2009 - Germany (6-2 vs England) 2005 - Germany (3-1 vs Norway) 2001 - Germany (1-0 g.g. vs Sweden) 1997 - Germany (2-0 vs Italy) 1995 - Germany (3-2 vs Sweden) 1993 - Norway (1-0 vs Italy) 1991 - Germany (3-1 a.e.t. vs Norway) 1989 - West Germany (4-1 vs Norway) 1987 - Norway (2-1 vs Sweden) 1984 - Sweden (1-1 vs England, 4-3 on penalties) Euro 2025 route to final

Arne Slot aims dig at Liverpool star as he introduces Hugo Ekitike to new team-mates

Hugo Ekitike flew out to Hong Kong after completing his £79million transfer from Eintracht Frankfurt to Liverpool - and Arne Slot had an amusing way to introduce him Hugo Ekitike has joined up with his new team-mates after flying out to Hong Kong for Liverpool 's pre-season tour – and he appeared at ease straight away. Ekitike joined after Liverpool agreed a deal worth a potential £79million with Eintracht Frankfurt. ‌ He has signed a six-year contract with the Reds, who moved quickly to land the France under-21 striker after Frankfurt rejected an offer from Newcastle, while Manchester United also made a late attempt to sign him. Ekitike has followed Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez to the club during a busy transfer window that has seen Liverpool spend £265m on seven signings. ‌ There have been lots of new faces inside the Liverpool squad this summer as they prepare to defend their Premier League title. And the way Arne Slot has tried to make them feel at home was evident in behind-the-scenes footage shared by the club on social media. ‌ Ekitike signed for Liverpool on Wednesday before flying straight to Hong Kong on Thursday. He met his new team-mates at an open training session inside the Kai Tak Stadium, with the cameras there to show their interactions. After shaking hands with many of them, Slot gathered people around to introduce Ekitike, who he first spoke to at the end of the 2024/25 season. 'As you can see, we have a new player, so we're hoping he's the first Frenchman who can score goals for us,' Slot joked while looking around at defender Ibrahima Konate. The other players reacted by shouting 'Ibou!', while the camera showed Mohamed Salah grinning as he said 'wow' repeatedly. ‌ After chatting with Konate, Cody Gakpo was seen saying: 'Oh, so you're happy to have another Frenchman, eh!' Keeping Konate happy could be important for Liverpool after the centre-back's agitation earlier in the summer. Back in June, reports emerged saying he was 'disappointed' by the club's offer of a new contract. His representatives are pushing for higher wages after bumper new deals were handed out to Salah and Virgil van Dijk. ‌ Konate, whose current deal expires in June 2026, has been linked with Real Madrid, who have developed a reputation for signing players when they become free agents. Liverpool know that all too well, having lost Trent Alexander-Arnold in that fashion this summer, while Kylian Mbappe, Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba all arrived in Madrid that way too. It seems unlikely that Konate would leave this summer, but Liverpool have been eyeing Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi. Currently, though, all the excitement is over Alexander Isak, after the striker told Newcastle he wants to explore his options in the transfer market. Liverpool made an enquiry to Newcastle about Isak last week, before signing Ekitike, and it is understood they could afford the Swedish star, even after a busy summer. With Darwin Nunez, Harvey Elliott and Luis Diaz all potentially leaving, there are plenty more deals in the pipeline this summer.
