Prologue
In the fall of 1980, when I was fourteen, a friend of my parents named Naomi Shah fell in love with me. She was thirty-six, a mother of two, and married to a wealthy man. Like so many things that happened to me that year, it didn't seem strange at the time.
Two decades later, when I finally told my mother—we were on Long Island, taking a walk on the beach—she stopped, stunned, and said, "But she was such an ugly woman." The remark wasn't as petty as it sounds. If I was aware of it then, it neither repulsed me nor affected my feelings for Naomi. It was just a thing I took for granted, like the color of her hair.
Wiry and ashen, it had the shading but not the shimmer of pigeon feathers. Naomi kept it long, so that it fell past her shoulders. I knew it by touch, for my face was often buried in it. Only later did I wonder if she considered herself unattractive, because she always wore sunglasses, as if to hide her face, large gold frames with blue-tinted prescription lenses. When we were driving together, which was often that year, she'd allow these to slide down her nose and then look at me over their bridge. She might've considered this pose winning, but it was more likely to see me better. Her mouth often hung slightly open. Her lower teeth were uneven, and her tongue, which pressed against them, always tasted of coffee.
Naomi's car was a silver Mercedes sedan—300sd along with turbo diesel nickel-plated on the back—that made a deep hum when she drove. The interior, enormous in my mind's eye, was tricked out with glossy wood paneling and white leather, back seat so wide and legroom so ample they made the driver appear to be far away. It was in this car that Naomi and I talked most often. We'd park, and then she'd lean across the armrest to press her cheek to mine, and I'd sometimes allow her to kiss me. Other times we'd move to the back. Lying there with Naomi, her nose nuzzled to my neck, I'd stare at the ceiling's dotted fabric until the pattern seemed to detach and drift like a starred sky. This car was her prized possession, and like many commuters, she had turned the machine into an extension of her body. Her left thumb lightly hooked the wheel at eight o'clock when traffic was moving, her fingertips sliding to eleven when it was slow. She preferred to sit slightly reclined, her free hand spread on her inner thigh, though after she lost her pinky the following summer, and even after being fitted with a prosthesis, she kept it tucked away.
"I was worried you'd think it was disgusting," she said, the digit hidden between the seat and her hip. She'd bought herself a diamond ring to hide the seam, and for the most part the likeness was uncanny, but at certain angles you could tell—the cuticle's line was too smooth, the nail's pale crescent too creamy to match the others. Like my father's fake teeth, which he occasionally left lying around our apartment, I was fascinated by it, though my curiosity wasn't morbid. I was a child actor, you see, a student of all forms of dissembling, and had long ago found my greatest subject to be adults.

Mobile Game Monday: CREATURES OF THE DEEP

Greetings, friends, and welcome to Mobile Game Monday, where we chat about games you can play on the go. If you like gaming on a phone or tablet , this is the place for you. Join us every week as we go on all sorts of adventures. Summer and fishing go hand in fin, but you don't necessarily have to hit the water or get a sunburn to catch some fish. Just grab your phone and relax while you explore amazing islands and catch hundreds of fish in Creatures of the Deep . RELATED: Mobile Game Monday: Forest Island Creatures of the Deep Creatures of the Deep (2022) is a fishing simulation game developed and published by Infinite Dreams. Use the Flying Bob Travel Agency to explore eight locations from Alaska to the Amazon. Cruise around these peaceful places in your little boat, then cast a line to collect over 600 items, including fish, treasure, and sea monsters. Can you collect all of the fish and discover every secret at each location? Gameplay Drag your finger to walk around the island and cruise the waters in your boat. On the water, when you see fish-shaped shadows, park your boat and drop your line in front of the shadow. The fishing mechanics are similar to those in other games. Tap to drop your line, wait while the fish nibbles a bit, and then tap again to pull in your line at just the right moment. Image courtesy of Google Play. Each destination has a unique roster of critters to catch and an NPC with quests to guide you around the island. However, there is more to completing your collection than simply dropping a line just anywhere. Sometimes you need to catch a specific fish for a quest and not every critter is the same. RELATED: Mobile Game Monday: A Tiny Sticker Tale It is important to know that some creatures only appear in certain seasons within designated areas at different times of the day. So, make sure you are looking in the right place at the right time. Upgrading your rod, along with using the correct lure and bait, ensures the catch of a lifetime. Additionally, some creatures are more dangerous than others, and every island is home to a legendary sea monster like Shredder the shark or Bessie the lake monster. As you complete quests for the quirky captains on each island, they will gradually give you tips on how to catch the big one. RELATED: July's Most Anticipated Video Games Game Modes One of the best things about Creatures of the Deep is that there is a game mode for everyone, no matter what your play style. Choose to play solo or join a clan for cooperative play. Clans can conquer seasonal challenges together and even collectively build a massive base. Image courtesy of Google Play. If you crave competition, fish in tournaments or battle others in intense pvp duels. Additionally, completing daily quests as well as competing in tournaments and monster hunts will yield epic rewards. RELATED: Mobile Game Monday: Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp Complete Customization, Leveling, and Upgrades As you level, rebuild parts of the islands to access places like the wardrobe. Here you can customize your look with any new clothing, accessories, or jewelry you have collected. Of course, the shop lets you sell extra fish, and you can use your earnings to build up your camp or upgrade your aquarium. Other buildings, like the dockyard, let you do things like customize your boat and increase your inventory. Image courtesy of Google Play. Each area requires a specific level, materials, and gold to unlock. Building materials like wood are very scarce, which makes unlocking areas very slow. Leveling is also a slow process in Creatures of the Deep, and it takes a lot of grinding to make very little progress. So if you are an impatient player who needs instant gratification, this may not be the game for you. RELATED: Mobile Game Monday: Octomaze When you do finally level, you will get an ability point to increase luck, strength, reflex, perception, or charisma. These skills make fishing easier; for example, luck will increase your chances of finding rare fish. Our Adventure Ends Here Although I enjoyed collecting all of the fish, especially the monsters, I found catching things in Creatures of the Deep a tad frustrating. The game gives you a split second to catch the fish and is very unforgiving. A slow leveling system and scarce resources only add to the frustration. However, the locations are fun to explore and beautifully designed. RELATED: Read all of the Mobile Game Monday adventures here! Consequently, I loved cruising around the maps in the little boat because the controls are so smooth and satisfying. The soundtrack also adds to the Zen experience with atmospheric nature sounds and melodious music. Ironically, I loved everything about Creatures of the Deep except for the actual fishing mechanic. Finicky fishing aside, Creatures of the Deep is worth a play, especially if you could use some relaxing downtime. Take it easy, and play it safe, gamers. Creatures of the Deep is available for free in the Google Play Store and the App Store. Mobile Game Monday: DOWN IN BERMUDA

WWE Evolution 2025 Results, Charlotte Flair Posts Timely Message After PLE

FAIRBORN, OHIO - MAY 9: Charlotte Flair speaks during SmackDown at Nutter Center on May 9, 2025 in ... More Fairborn, Ohio. (Photo by Michael Marques/WWE via Getty Images) Naomi owned an absolutely amazing night of professional wrestling at WWE Evolution in Atlanta, and long-time friend Charlotte Flair acknowledged her. In case you missed it, Naomi lost to Jade Cargill in a No Holds Barred match but cashed in her Money in the Bank briefcase and became the Women's World Heavyweight Champion to crash a classic main event between Rhea Ripley and Iyo Sky. After Naomi's big night, tributes and love poured in online, but perhaps most notably, Charlotte took to social media and posted a simple but statement-making image of the new champion. Pictures are said to be worth a thousand words, and this is an example. Almost everyone in the wrestling community chimed in to congratulate the new champion, who has been one of the most consistent performers in WWE over the past decade-plus. Naomi hasn't held a top-level singles title in WWE since 2013, but despite the long drought between singles gold, she holds quite a few important distinctions. Pro wrestling content creator Joey Karni pointed out Naomi's cross-promotional championship record. In addition to achieving top-level status with two different promotions, Naomi also became the first Black woman to win the Money in the Bank match and to successfully cash in the briefcase. Naomi had performed in four other MITB matches. Ember Moon and Sasha Banks/Mercedes Moné have been in MITB matches, but neither won. Charlotte and Naomi go way back in pro wrestling and WWE. Naomi began her in-ring career in 2009, while Charlotte started in 2012. Charlotte's place as a second-generation talent after her iconic father Ric Flair was never really in doubt. She worked hard to become arguably the greatest women's wrestler ever, but Naomi's road to her current spot has been more arduous. At the outset of her run with WWE, Naomi was reduced to less significant roles with the company. She was a Funkadactyl, which was essentially a backup dancer for Brodus Clay, a male professional wrestler who was signed with WWE at the time. Naomi battled to become an in-ring performer, then a singles performer and title contender. She and Sasha Banks rose to become WWE Women's Tag Team Champions but became frustrated with their situation, and they walked out of WWE on May 16, 2022, during a live taping of Monday Night Raw in Norfolk, Virginia. According to reports and WWE's own statement, they were scheduled to participate in a Six-Pack Challenge to determine the next challenger for the Raw Women's Championship. Citing creative differences and concerns over how they and the titles were being booked, they left their tag belts on John Laurinaitis' desk and walked out before the match aired. WWE released a public statement during the live broadcast. WWE announcer Michael Cole said, 'Naomi and Sasha had let us all down.' Both were suspended indefinitely just days later. Their merchandise was pulled from WWE Shop, and the Women's Tag Titles were vacated. Banks wound up going to New Japan Pro Wrestling before settling in as one of the biggest names with All Elite Wrestling. Naomi landed with Impact Wrestling, performing under her given name, Trinity Fatu, but she returned to WWE in 2024. Both women bet on themselves, and it seems clear they are winning. It says something when a peer and fellow legend like Charlotte gives public praise. Congratulations to Trinity for reaching the top of her industry. WWE Evolution 2025: 7 big takeaways, including the landscape of the women's division turning upside down

WWE Evolution 2025 took over the State Farm Arena on Sunday evening in Atlanta for the promotion's second-ever all-women card. Naomi stole the show with an unlikely Money in the Bank cash-in, Trish Stratus showed she still has what it takes to compete at the highest level, and Stephanie Vaquer's stock is at an all-time high with a championship match right around the corner. As we round out WWE's weekend residence in the deep south, here's seven big takeaways from a monumental evening in Atlanta. Advertisement 1. Naomi trades in her briefcase for championship gold Iyo Sky and Rhea Ripley put on an absolute war in a match that lived up to the expectations established when it was first announced. Sky and Ripley are two women who have incredible chemistry any time they're in the ring together, and Sunday night was no exception. A well-timed referee bump led to the action spilling onto the floor before Naomi's stunning cash-in. Naomi's cash-in was legitimately shocking and it totally transforms the landscape of the women's roster. Naomi seemed firmly planted in her rivalry with Jade Cargill and I assumed that was the direction for her eventual cash-in. Instead, she opens the door atop the mountain to the Women's World Championship picture, with the likes of Sky and Ripley suddenly looking up. How WWE moves from here will be fascinating. 2. Jade Cargill seems destined for the title Jade Cargill is now 2-0 against Naomi in singles matches, winning for the second time after previously defeating her at WrestleMania in April. Their No Holds Barred match was brutal and involved some great spots, with much of the action being spent with Naomi on the receiving end of a beatdown. Cargill looked like an absolute monster and continues to seemingly be groomed to be a future world champion and world-beater. Advertisement It felt like the direction this was going meant Naomi would get her comeuppance sooner rather than later, and quite possibly at SummerSlam when Cargill fights for the WWE Women's Championship at SummerSlam. Before the main event, I predicted that Naomi's days holding the Money in the Bank briefcase would be numbered — I just didn't anticipate she'd cash in on the very same night, which seems to separate Cargill and Naomi for the foreseeable future. The move could allow their rivalry to cool down, Cargill to inch closer to holding championship gold, and for WWE to eventually circle back to Naomi in the future. 3. Stephanie Vaquer is riding huge momentum When Stephanie Vaquer signed with WWE and immediately landed in NXT, it wasn't clear what her path to the main roster and superstardom would look like. She's taken the WWE by storm though, quickly rising up the ranks in NXT and capturing both the NXT Women's Championship and the NXT Women's North American title less than six months into her tenure. Advertisement With her move to the main roster, her rise has followed a similar trajectory. More than a month after she dropped the NXT Women's Championship to Jacy Jayne, Vaquer has competed in the Money in the Bank match, the Queen of the Ring tournament, and now she's earned a world championship match at Clash in Paris. If there were betting odds for this one, they would favor Vaquer holding one of WWE's women's world championships by the end of next year's WrestleMania 42 weekend. 4. Becky Lynch retains, but Lyra Valkyria belongs When it became clear which match was going to close Sunday's show, there was almost no question this one should open it. Between three absolute workhorses, Becky Lynch, Bayley and Lyra Valkyria were almost guaranteed to put on a show-stealer. Yet somehow they over-delivered in a match that set the tone for the evening. Advertisement Valkyria has been one of the more consistent performers in WWE since her arrival, and she's only upped her game since jumping into this program after WrestleMania 41. What was projected to be a sink-or-swim moment for her has been exactly that — she swam. She's stepped up in a big way with this feud, both in the ring and on the mic, to match the levels with Lynch and Bayley. Sunday night was no different as Valkyria looked the part of a main-eventer alongside two of the most consistent women in WWE. 5. Trish Stratus passes the baton to Tiffany Stratton Trish Stratus and Tiffany Stratton was everything we imagined Stratton and Charlotte Flair would be when they first locked up. The match very much felt like a passing of the guard from the former face of the women's division to the current. Stratus played all the hits and at times appeared on the verge of becoming the new WWE Women's Champion. My assumption was Stratus would walk out champion to set up a passing of the guard moment against Jade Cargill at SummerSlam. Instead, Stratton is the one receiving the push in the right direction, keeping the course as she continues to build momentum on what is a pretty decent title run. Advertisement Other thoughts: 6. No surprises with The Judgment Day retaining their Women's Tag Team titles. Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss gel really well as a tag team and it's fresh to move Flair from on her own to the support of a tag team. She received a huge response in Atlanta and this unlikely team feels like the perfect opposition to the Judgement Day. I can understand why Sunday's match wasn't a 2 vs. 2, but that should ideally be where we're headed. 7. Blake Monroe's alignment with Jordynne Grace was deservedly short-lived, as she was flying a bit too close to becoming a character she just spent more than a year building and subsequently tearing down in AEW. A right-out-of-the-gate rivalry with Grace is going to be hard-hitting though, and offers what could be a signature program incredibly early into her WWE tenure.
