Grassroots venues are critical for encouraging and developing the future stars of music; without these spaces, we wouldn't have the huge icons we know and love today.
This was the rallying cry from rising stars Prima Queen when they met Metro at London's Phoenix Arts Club, having just released their debut album, The Prize.
The duo, consisting of best friends Kristin McFadden, 30, and Louise Macphail, 27, are not from London but found a home in the independent scene here in 2017 when they began to carve out their path into the music industry.
'London's grassroots venues have done so, so much to help start our career,' shared Kristin, who is originally from Chicago but moved here for a songwriting course, on which she met Louise.
The Oats singer continued: 'One of our pivotal shows was playing at Windmill [Brixton], which is one of our favourite venues.
'We went on our first tour because the sound engineer became a fan from our set, and then told The Big Moon about us, and we got to go on tour with them.'
Now, Prima Queen are following in the Mercury Prize nominees' footsteps with their own headlining tour this year, visiting independents like London's Islington Assembly Hall and the iconic Thekla in Louise's hometown of Bristol.
Ticketing app DICE has put together a list of their 25 grassroots artists you need to see in London over the next six months.
With tickets ranging from free to £27.50, these shows will ensure a great night to suit all tastes and budgets.
Click HERE to catch the full list.
Kristin continued: 'It literally goes back to these grassroots venues, [that's] how a band can build up from nothing to start making your way into the industry.'
'You'd never be ready to play the big shows without them,' Louise agreed. 'It's like a training ground, having all these venues around London.
'Most bands go through a time where you're just playing one or more every week and making loads and loads of mistakes, and then learning from them.'
Prima Queen have joined the likes of Billy Bragg and Skunk Anansie to voice their support for London's grassroots scene following the launch of the London Grassroots Music Tube Map.
It's part of a new campaign that Metro is running alongside the Mayor of London, Transport for London and organisations including the Music Venue Trust, Featured Artist Coalition, Outernet and Universal Music.
The map will be screened for a month at the Outernet London, the largest digital exhibition space in Europe.
The interactive display of the map will be shown in the Arcade space, which links the nightclub to The Lower Third grassroots music venue on Denmark Street.
What sets these smaller venues apart of the sense of community you can feel in them, especially when you work behind the scenes as well as on the stage like Louise.
She worked for the radical art and music space Matchstick Piehouse in Deptford and was there when it tragically shut down at the end of 2023.
The venue was plunged into £36,000 of rent debt after the pandemic, but with the help of the Music Venue Trust and a huge fundraising effort, it has partially re-opened as Piehouse Co-op.
'The community brought it back,' Louise said of the space. 'The venues are crumbling, but the community is still there.'
Kristin believes the online focus can distract from that community aspect, explaining: 'Some people go viral and they have all these followers, but they struggle to fill venues.'
Neither is wrong or right, it's just totally different.
'It's sad that people are spending more time on their phones and not just going out and seeing who's down the street.'
This echoes the 'best bit of advice' Louise ever got for starting a career in the industry: to just go out and find the music.

'The way that you become successful is filling up your local venue and having a queue down the street, and then that's what leads you to the next step,' she shared before pondering: 'I wonder now, is that the same advice because it's so online?'
Prima Queen have recently played one of their biggest ever gigs at Hammersmith's Eventim Apollo, with a capacity of 5,000 standing.
The contrast between this and their 'warm up' show at the independent London venue Omera, with a 320 capacity, didn't go unnoticed.
'Obviously it's fun being on a big stage in front of lots of people,' said Kristin before Louise, showing how in sync the pair are, finished her sentence and added: 'But you can't see their faces.'
That 'magic' connection with the audience can get a bit lost, especially when the artist has in-ear headphones for the music, which almost completely mutes the crowd.
'When you're playing in smaller venues, you can really have that back and forth with the crowd,' Louise explained, sharing that their recent smaller gig became an accidental Q&A thanks to the intimacy.
The Eclipse singers would love for larger artists to start doing small gig tours too, bringing their existing fanbase into spaces they may never have seen before.
She added: 'The people that already care about music venues, really care. We just need more people who maybe aren't aware of them to be going to those spaces and putting value on them.
Ultimately, responsibility falls on the gig-goers to keep the doors open rather than the artists – if you have nobody buying tickets and drinks, then the space cannot continue to function. More Trending
'This is a space where you can see music for affordable prices,' Kristin points out, with most venues only charging around £10 to £15 per gig (as opposed to £200).
Rising electricity and daily living costs also impact the venue owners but in the face of the skyrocketing arena and stadium tour prices, going to grassroots venues could be the way forward.
Kristin agreed: 'We feel so disconnected in society right now for so many reasons, and to have these spaces to come and be seen by our friends, neighbours, and community and feel supported and support other musicians.
'I think we forget how important it is to be in those spaces.'

Lisa Faulkner makes first public statement since John Torode's MasterChef firing

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up Next Previous Page Next Page John Torode's wife Lisa Faulkner has thanked fans for their kind words after the MasterChef star was axed for allegedly using a racist slur. The TV presenter and chef, 60, was removed from the cooking competition alongside his co-host Gregg Wallace, also 60, earlier this month. Wallace stepped away from MasterChef in November last year while an in-depth investigation was conducted into the historical allegations regarding his behaviour on the show. It was found that 45 out of 83 allegations were upheld following the investigation. Wallace said he was 'deeply sorry' for his past actions but insisted that the most serious allegations were unproven. Shortly afterwards it emerged that co-host Torode's contract would also not be renewed after nine complaints were lodged against him. Among these was a claim that he 'used the N-word' on two separate occasions, which he said he has no memory of. Now, taking to Instagram, Torode's wife Lisa has made her first public statement. Lisa Faulkner has spoken publicly for the first time since her husband John Torode's axing from the BBC (Picture: James Veysey/Shutterstock) The couple have previously presented together on John and Lisa's Weekend Kitchen (Picture: Geraint Warrington/Shutterstock) The 53-year-old former actress, who has had roles in Brookside, Holby City, and EastEnders, filmed herself from what appears to be her garden. She said: 'Hi there, I just wanted to check in and say hello and I'm here. 'Just thank you for all your really lovely comments because they really mean a lot, so thank you.' Lisa, who now presents and does home cooking on her social media, met Torode in 2010 when she won Celebrity MasterChef. Despite both of them being married to other people at the time, their friendship blossomed into a relationship, with Torode reportedly winning her over with a love letter. After marrying in 201,9 the pair went on to work with each other on various cooking shows. Lisa pictured with the two presenters after her Celebrity MasterChef win in 2010, when she met Torode (Picture: Ray Tang/REX) Gregg Wallace recently unfollowed both of them on social media (Picture: Ken McKay/ITV/Shutterstock) Lisa's comments come after Torode was spotted looking glum in his first public outing since the Silkins report. He was seen on his 60th birthday on July 23 visiting an organic food store near his home in north London. The sighting came after Wallace told The Sun he has unfollowed both Torode and Lisa on social media. Speaking about Torode in his first interview since being sacked, Wallace said: 'We never really did get on that well. 'We're two very, very different characters. But we made bloody good telly together for 20 years.' Torode was recently spotted out on a walk on his 60th birthday (Picture: Sdove) Torode was axed from the BBC for allegedly using a racist slur (Picture: Ken McKay/ITV/Shutterstock) Despite the findings of the investigation, the BBC confirmed that the series of MasterChef filmed before Wallace and Torode's sackings will air as normal despite it featuring both presenters. A BBC spokesperson said: 'After careful consideration and consultation with the contestants, we have decided to broadcast the amateur series of MasterChef on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from August 6. 'MasterChef is an amazing competition which is life-changing for the amateur chefs taking part. The focus of it has always been their skill and their journey.' The spokesperson revealed that it had 'not been an easy decision in the circumstances' and acknowledged that not everyone would agree with the final result. They added: 'In showing the series, which was filmed last year, it in no way diminishes our view of the seriousness of the upheld findings against both presenters. 'We have been very clear on the standards of behaviour that we expect of those who work at the BBC or on shows made for the BBC.' Got a story? Emmerdale fans 'work out' Belle's new romance after huge clue

Emmerdale fans are wondering if things are about to change for Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor-Draper) where the world of romance is concerned. Belle has been single following a horrific ordeal that saw her abused by husband Tom King (James Chase). When Tom and Belle got together, it wasn't long until we started to see signs of controlling behaviour from him. At first, Tom's actions were small, but he then became hellbent on isolating Belle from her entire family. Over the next year, Tom was responsible for installing security cameras in the house, tracking Belle's every movement, physically and mentally abusing her, as well as pretending her dog Piper had died in an attempt to get close to her again. Belle eventually reported Tom and he was sent to prison for three years. In February of this year, Belle decided she would begin divorce proceedings, but it meant visiting Tom in prison. Fortunately, strong-willed Belle was able to stand up to Tom and ignore his attempts at getting inside her head. Since then, she has worked hard on her healing journey, and has even started running Take a Vow in the wake of Leyla and Suzy's deaths. It's clear Belle is in a much better headspace after allowing herself time to recover from Tom's abuse. As a result of things being brighter for Belle, it of course gives her the opportunity to contemplate dipping her toe back into the dating pool. Just recently, Kammy Hadiq star Shebz Miah shared a picture of him and Eden Taylor-Draper sitting on a sofa together. They were smiling at the camera and wearing smart outfits. The post has got a lot of fans talking, and plenty of them are now wondering if this could be a clue that Belle and Kammy will share a romance storyline together soon. 'Kammy and Belle?? Could this be a future relationship', a follower said in the comments section. Another wrote: 'Omg, are they getting together on Emmerdale? If so, I saw it coming a mile away.' This fan echoed the hopes of Belle and Kammy (Kelle? Bammy?) being a thing and said: 'Beautiful photo pair of brilliant actors Get them together Emmerdale and don't spoil the relationship.' Kammy Hadiq made his arrival to the Emmerdale village in March of this year. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? I'm a WWE expert – I'm shocked the Netflix documentary went so far

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video When Netflix announced new docu-series WWE: Unreal, it's fair to say there were some concerns. I've been Metro's WWE and pro wrestling expert for almost six years now, travelling the world (and logging onto Zoom) to speak to the biggest names in sports entertainment, from The Undertaker and Becky Lynch to Triple H and Rhea Ripley. Even I had my reservations. I make a living out of sharing real life stories, but how far should the curtain be pulled back on a business built on the suspension of disbelief? The new five-part series – which launches today with all episodes available to binge – had promised an unprecedented look behind the scenes, from the writers room and beyond. After watching all five episodes over two days earlier this month, I can safely say director Chris Weaver has crafted a uniquely touching and surprising look at the world of wrestling that only adds to the magic. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you. It's impressive that the team crafted something that will work for the uninitiated just as much as the diehard fanatic, succinctly explaining terms like 'heel' (bad guy), 'babyface' (good guy) and 'Gorilla Position' (WWE's backstage production hub) without patronising. Almost from the get-go in episode one, we get to see the writing room, getting a glimpse at how Paul 'Triple H' Levesque and his creative team put together hours of television a month. It almost feels a bit naughty listening into to these meetings over the entire season, as they debate Royal Rumble winners, John Cena's heel turn, and even how to motivate Jey Uso on the road to WrestleMania. Episode 1 – New Era Episode 2 – The Push Episode 3 – Worth the Wait Episode 4 – Heel Turn Episode 5 – WrestleMania There are moments fans have seen reports of in the news, but never seen with their own eyes. That all changes here. The first episode delves into the Raw premiere on Netflix in wild detail, even showing how producer Chris Park (AKA Abyss) worked with Seth Rollins and CM Punk on their January 6 main event. I found myself actually feeling a little heartbroken, as the TNA Wrestling legend got a dressing down from boss Bruce Pritchard for the match overrunning. It went down brilliantly with fans at the time, but here the executive calls it 'overwritten', leaving Abyss – a mountain of a man – almost cowering as he apologises and asks if Bruce is mad at him. It's not a moment that paints the executive in the best light. Elsewhere, we see Chelsea Green pushing back on the ending to her Saturday Night's Main Event match where she became the first ever Women's United States Champion. We delved into it with her last week, but seeing her discussions with producers – as well as hearing her journey firsthand – is fascinating. Just as engaging is the in-depth character pieces Netflix have created for each episode, putting the superstars front and centre as their true selves, with the likes of Cody Rhodes, John Cena, Triple H, Bianca Belair and more all heavily featured. One of the season's highlights comes in episode four, Heel Turn, which goes into startling detail on John Cena's turn to the dark side earlier this year. WWE's production is second to none, and their partnership with Netflix is on full display with a stunningly-presented timeline about how Triple H communicated with a close knit circle to pull it off without anything leaking. Triple H only spoke to The Rock, John Cena, Cody Rhodes and Travis Scott about the big plans, even keeping it hidden from right hand man Bruce until the very last second. The episode also showcases how WWE's veteran director had to call everything on the fly, cutting to different cameras and capturing the action despite not knowing what was coming. Cena's heel turn was thrilling to watch in the moment – but it's just as exciting follows the drama happening just behind the curtain. I won't spoil too much about the series, as it's a genuinely enthralling ride from start to finish, culminating fittingly at WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas. What I will say is that something many fans were fearful of may actually be the best thing for wrestling – and superstars like CM Punk still manage to tread the line without giving too much away. If you already love WWE, you'll love seeing how they create the magic. If you've never given it the chance, you'll gain a deeper respect for pro wrestling as an artform. You'll weep for Rhea Ripley as she breaks down her devastating shoulder injury which has left her with a lump on her shoulder until she finally decides to undergo surgery. More Trending You'll cheer for Jey Uso as he finally gets his moment at the Rumble with his son watching in the front row. And you'll gain a deeper respect for the men and women that step into the ring all in the name of entertainment. Yes, it's scripted. Yes, it's a show. But the glory, the drama and the sacrifice are as real as it gets. WWE truly is Unreal. View More » WWE: Unreal is available to stream on Netflix. Got a story?
