Why are more Hong Kong pupils opting for IB programme over DSE?
The number of students taking the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme in Hong Kong has increased by nearly 20 per cent over the past five years, with more students and parents preferring its flexibility to the city's traditional, exam-oriented university entrance system. Advertisement More than 2,600 students taking the IB exam will learn their results on Sunday, while those of nearly 55,800 Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) candidates will be out the week after on July 16. According to figures obtained by the Post from the IB body, the number of students – including those taking the May and November sessions – rose from 2,193 in 2021 to 2,406 in 2024. The figure for the May session in 2025 alone reached 2,628, which was 19.6 per cent higher than in 2021. The number of global IB exam candidates also grew by 25.9 per cent from 170,637 in 2021 to 214,761 in 2024. The figure for the May session in 2025 was over 202,000. Dion Chen, chairman of the Hong Kong Direct Subsidy Scheme Schools Council, says more DSS schools have launched different international curricula over the past decade. How amateur sport is making it to the big leagues in China
It was not quite the American Super Bowl but it was a big moment nonetheless. In the middle of last month, as two amateur football teams from two small cities in eastern China took to the field, a fleet of light aircraft flew over the stadium. The fly-past at the Yangzhou Sports Park Stadium was testament to the popularity of the competition the two teams were playing in, the Jiangsu City Football League – also known as the Su Super League. The league, which is in its first season, pits 13 teams of amateurs from various cities in Jiangsu province against each other in six home and six away matches, with the top eight teams on points entering the knockout stage starting in October. The players on the teams are diverse, with everyone from teens to farmers and middle-aged weekend warriors lining up for the matches. Since the league's first game in May, millions of viewers have tuned in online and tens of thousands of fans have gone to stadiums, attracted by the local nature of the event. So much so that fans petitioned the military's Eastern Theatre Command to send fighter jets over the stadium for the final in November.

Michelin-starred Hong Kong restaurants Amber and The Chairman team up for lunch items
At the beginning of this year's Lunar New Year, a fortune-teller told Richard Ekkebus, culinary director of the Landmark Mandarin Oriental hotel in Hong Kong, that he would reach new heights in 2025. This came as no surprise to the chef, who also happens to be a prolific mountaineer; at the time, he was already planning his next expedition. So, it was a pleasant surprise when new heights came in the form of a third Michelin star for his restaurant Amber, after 17 years of sitting on two. To celebrate the occasion and to shine a light on his industry friends in Hong Kong, Ekkebus has launched a series of crossover products with gastronomic movers and shakers – such as May Chow of Little Bao and Lorenzo Antinori of Bar Leone – that are being sold at the hotel's grab-and-go concept, LMO Freshly Baked, and will raise funds for charity. One of Ekkebus' most unexpected collaborations is with Danny Yip, owner of acclaimed Hong Kong restaurant The Chairman. The duo have created a series of East-meets-West lunch items, including Sichuan spicy peppercorn beef pie; lotus root and celtuce salad with pine nut dressing; and a char siu sauce chicken thigh sandwich with caramelised onion.
