LIV Golfer Surprisingly Disqualified From The Open Championship
The Open Championship, golf's oldest major, is set to take place from 17–20 July 2025 at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.

However, before golfers reach the famed links, they must survive two intense rounds in Final Qualifying. 36-hole 'marathons' held at venues like West Lancashire, Burnham & Berrow, Dundonald and Royal Cinque Ports.
Only the top five from each site earn a coveted spot in the 153rd Open. This year's Final Qualifying drew a strong contingent of LIV‑Golf players. Fourteen competed across the four locations.
Among that group, Majesticks GC star Sam Horsfield, 28, held high hopes after making the cut at last year's Open and thrived at Final Qualifying in 2024.
But his 2025 effort stumbled early at West Lancashire Golf Club. Through nine holes, Horsfield was seven over par, carding a 43 on the front nine.

Instead of continuing or officially withdrawing, he simply packed up and left the course at the turn, without notifying tournament officials. Under R&A rules, failure to formally withdraw constitutes a disqualification.
Accordingly, Horsfield was officially disqualified from the Final Qualifier on Tuesday.

The ruling highlights the R&A's strict adherence to protocol. Even underperformance must be handled through proper channels.
Horsfield's decision to depart without a formal withdrawal transformed what might have been a simple abandonment of his challenge into a clean rule breach.
It also highlighted the mental toll of the 36‐hole qualifier grind, especially for players traveling from the U.S. only days prior.

While some LIV peers, like Poland's Adrian Meronk, withdrew after 18 holes with official notice, Horsfield's misstep cost him his tournament standing.
As the drama at West Lancashire wraps up, attention shifts to the remaining qualifiers and who will secure the final tickets to Portrush.

However, On3's JD PicKell discussed how Auburn could right the ship this season. He believed it would all come down to Oklahoma Sooners transfer Jackson Arnold on a recent edition of "The Hard Count." Arnold played in 10 games, with nine starts, last season, throwing for 1,421 passing yards, 12 touchdowns, and three interceptions. While the interceptions do not look too bad, Arnold struggled more with fumbles last season. He fumbled the ball nine times in 2024. "Because when you play confident football, you usually play efficient football. Efficient football equates to somewhat low mistake football. Which is what plagued Arnold at Oklahoma." Advertisement Arnold was not the starter for long at Oklahoma last season. After a rough start against the Tennessee Volunteers, where he threw one interception and lost two fumbles, he was benched. Michael Hawkins Jr. started the next three games before Arnold was put back in the starting role for the remainder of the season. Fast forward to 2025, and Arnold is expected to compete for the starting job at Auburn. The Tigers added a solid weapon for the quarterback to use in former Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets receiver Eric Singleton Jr. In other recruiting news for Auburn, the Tigers were dealt a tough blow with five-star running back Ezavier Crowell after he committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide. Three-star offensive tackle Nikau Hepi was the first player from the NFL Academy Asia-Pacific campus to commit to a United States college. Hepi is a three-star prospect via 247Sports and hails from New Zealand. Arnold and Auburn kick off the 2025 season against the Baylor Bears on August 29.
