The majority of Brits believe this 'revolting' habit is perfectly fine

Metro5 days ago
Last week, a man whose naked body was inadvertently exposed to the world on Google Street View was awarded £9,000 in compensation after judges ruled his privacy was invaded.
As he was relaxing au naturel in his garden, the passing car papped him over the fence – and his backside was subsequently uploaded online for billions of people to see.
Despite the final ruling in his favour, the man was initially told off for 'walking around in inappropriate conditions.'
But now, a new study exploring the UK's attitude to nudity reveals that three quarters (73%) of the country are firmly on his side, sharing the belief that your birthday suit is perfectly acceptable garden attire.
According to YouGov's research, 39% of the British public claim they're open to being publicly naked in some form or another, while almost a quarter (23%) believe clothing is completely optional in the countryside.
These findings may come as a shock, as Brits are famously more prudish than our European counterparts when it comes to nudity – whereas many of us shy away from stripping down in the changing rooms, the Netherlands has more than 80 nudist beaches, while baring all is actually mandatory in a number of public saunas throughout Belgium and Germany.
What's the score on UK rules, though? British Naturism notes that according to the Sexual Offences Act 2003, it's perfectly legal to sunbathe starkers in your own garden, as long as you're not deliberately doing it to cause 'alarm and distress.'
One of the organisation's leading mantras is that 'being naked is good for you,' citing numerous benefits to a clothes-free existence, including improved mental, emotional and physical health, as well as improving body image issues.
'Being naked in the company of others helps people's perception of what constitutes a healthy body – it's okay to have wobbly bits and be different from most 'celebrity' bodies,' its website reads.
We took it upon ourselves to ask Metro readers: is it ever okay to get nude in your own back garden?
Referring to her enclosed garden setup, Becky Irving joked: 'You'd have to go up onto your roof and look in to see, so if the neighbours go to all that hassle and get the fright of their life seeing me in the nip, that's their own fault.'
Jorge Florez claimed 'nudity is harmless,' and that 'everybody should be able to be naked wherever they want to,' a sentiment echoed by Chris T Wilkinson who wrote: 'We are not born with clothes on.' Which, we guess, is technically true.'
'My garden, my rules, it's as simple as that,' James Hyde commented, adding: 'If I want to prance around naked in my garden I will.' Fair enough. More Trending
Charlotte Simon argued if people go snooping over fences and 'get offended,' then 'that's their problem,' but Roni Smith said that while she would sit in the back garden with just her bra on, she 'wouldn't go all out.'
Not everyone felt the same though, including Cameron Betty who quipped: 'It's all well and good till you're in the community garden of a block of 100 flats.'
'I don't like looking at my own body, so I certainly don't want to see anyone else's,' Elizabeth Trudgill added, while Jan Delaney Syme said they didn't want to see their 'revolting old neighbour's bits'.
'Some parents don't want their children introduced to their neighbour's genitals,' they wrote. 'If I lived next to an exhibitionist, they'd be getting a cold, sharp blast from the hosepipe.'

Musicians head to Berlin as part of 'Brand Scotland' trade mission

Young Scottish musicians will perform in Berlin this week as part of a UK Government effort to promote Scottish culture and attract international investment. Members of the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland (NYOS) and their guest soloist, Ryan Corbett, will perform at a business and government breakfast event at the British Ambassador's residence, hosted by Scottish secretary Iain Murray and UK's ambassador to Germany, Andrew Mitchell. The event, dubbed 'Symphony and Sausages', will see guests served smoked salmon, haggis, black pudding and homemade potato scones while showcasing Scottish music. It comes as part of efforts by the Scotland Office to boost 'Brand Scotland', promoting Scottish produce and culture in a bid to help economic growth. UK Government/Lauren Hurley Secretary for Scotland Ian Murray Murray said: 'Scotland's cultural excellence is one of our greatest assets in attracting international investment and driving economic growth. The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland represents some of our most extraordinary musical talent. I'm delighted that they are able to join me in Berlin, and this performance will demonstrate Scottish culture at its finest. 'My 'Brand Scotland' campaign is about selling all that is fantastic about Scotland to the world, to encourage both exports and inward investment in Scotland, and I'm very pleased that we have been able to fund this event in Berlin.' Brand Scotland is a key part of the UK Government's Plan for Change, bringing real rewards for people in Scotland.' The visit is part of Murray's 'Brand Scotland' trade mission to 'sell the best of Scotland to the world', forming part of the UK Government's Plan For Change. The orchestra is in Berlin to perform at the Young Euro Classic festival, premiering a new accordion concerto by Scottish composer Jay Capperauld under the baton of Catherine Larsen-Maguire. During his two-day trip, Murray will also meet German officials, including Michael Meister, Minister of State for Federal-State Relations, and representatives from Germany's 16 federal states. The breakfast is funded by a £2,700 grant from the Scotland Office's Brand Scotland fund, part of a wider UK Government programme to boost Scotland's trading relationship with Europe. Murray's visit follows the signing of a new UK-Germany treaty and comes ahead of a speech in Edinburgh where he will outline the role of Scottish culture in economic growth. The minister is also set to travel to India and Sweden as part of the 'Brand Scotland' initiative. Iconic TV channel axe all UK production after almost three decades as it becomes latest casualty of streaming

END OF AN ERA Iconic TV channel axe all UK production after almost three decades as it becomes latest casualty of streaming I USED to love going to my best mate's house to watch MTV when I was a kid in the Nineties because my parents were too tight to pay for extra TV channels. But youngsters now won't be able to do the same, as I'm told MTV UK is the latest casualty of social media and streaming. 4 MTV UK is the latest casualty of social media and streaming Credit: Alamy 4 Stars including Emma Willis got their big breaks in telly thanks to the station Credit: Alamy 4 Cat Deeley presenting on the beloved channel 4 Kelly Brook appearing on MTV UK Credit: Supplied My insiders said the station has been axed in all but name after bosses quietly closed the UK production arm of the channel. MTV spin doctors insist the station 'will still have a presence', but concede they will no longer be making original music content. Instead, generic US shows will be aired alongside the usual rolling music videos. Notable cancellations include original series Gonzo and Fresh Out UK. As well as being a huge blow to British music, it's also a major loss to up-and-coming presenting talent. Stars including Kelly Brook, Emma Willis and Cat Deeley all got their big breaks in telly thanks to the station. READ MORE ON MTV NO SHOW MTV AXE two huge Geordie Shore spin-offs - leaving cast fuming Greg James and Joel Dommett also hosted on the channel earlier in their careers. My source said: 'Everyone at MTV is gutted. To say there has been a bloodbath of cuts would be an understatement. 'Staff have been left in tears as some have been there for decades. "Those that are left fear more doom and gloom could be around the corner.' It comes after the EMAs — the European answer to the famous VMAs — was axed for this year in another cost- saving measure. A spokesman said: 'MTV UK is sunsetting local series Gonzo and Fresh Out UK, beginning this month. 'We are deeply grateful to our hosts Jack Saunders and Becca Dudley, the talented artists who have been a part of these series, as well as the teams who brought them to life. Watch emotional moment Ozzy Osbourne speak about amazing life with Sharon in resurfaced moment from The Osbournes as rocker tragically dies 'Fans can continue to enjoy global music shows like the MTV VMAs, STANS and Ozzy Osbourne: No Escape From Now on MTV and Paramount+, alongside digital music content on our MTV UK social channels.' I know nothing can ever stay the way it was . . . but this just makes me want to go back to the Nineties.

We're ditching the UK for Thailand – we can't wait to leave this ‘miserable' life, all we do is work to pay bills

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A UK FAMILY have set their sights on Thailand after growing tired of the British lifestyle. The Smiths cited the rising cost of living, crime, and the school system as their main motivations for ditching life in the Midlands. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 TikTok user Dale Smith explained why his family are leaving the UK for a new life in Thailand Credit: TikTok / @ Dale Smith told 1.9 million TikTok viewers about his family's upcoming move. He explained that he found a variety of factors have made the UK "not a nice place to live any more". The HGV driver and his wife Kim, 36, are moving with their children Noah, 10, and Molly, eight, in November. They said they want to break away from their monotonous routine and start a new life abroad, embracing the "beautiful scenery" and "incredible food" Thailand has to offer. "I feel like life is just flying by, you wake up on a Monday, you're fed up and you can't wait for the weekend – you're wishing the days away," Dale said. He added that the cost of living is continuing to rise while the UK streets are now "a state". Despite an increase in income following a change in work, Dale said all his extra money is "just going to bills". He compared the never-ending cycle to "banging your head against a brick wall". The couple's children are also excited for the move, eager to begin homeschooling life and leave the British school system. Dale and Kim plan to focus on English and basic maths, as subjects their children enjoy such as history, video editing, and photography. I fled the UK for sunny Dubai - life back home is miserable & no-one has any cash The TikToker added that he hopes his children will "learn new languages and learn about new cultures". He also pointed out that the "terrible" English weather is another push for the family to move abroad. "England is just a miserable place and we're just tired," he told his audience. The family plan to move across the globe with just "nothing but a bag of clothes" and use their savings to support them. They are also in the process of selling their three-bedroom home, their 2015 Ford Focus, and most of their possessions. How easy is it to move abroad? Brexit means British citizens now have to apply for visas to move to countries within the EU. While some countries residency restrictions are easier than others, here's what you need to do at home before moving: Notify HMRC about your upcoming move. Let your local authority know and provide a forwarding address. Contact your mortgage and utility providers and bank before leaving. If you have paid enough UK national insurance contributions, you can qualify for a state pension abroad - contact the International Pension Centre. You can sign up to the Royal Mail's redirection service. If you have outstanding student loans, contact the Student Loans Centre. If you have children, give due notice to childcares and schools. Dale added that he and Kim have been doing "loads" of research around visa applications, flights, and places they want to visit. He revealed that the they will travel to Bangkok for one week before moving down the coast to Hua Hin. The family will then stay at the scenic beachside district for a few months. Dale has been posting the family's journey on TikTok and YouTube, under the handle @ He described the upcoming new chapter as exciting but scary. More on living abroad Most expats surveyed claim living abroad is one of best decisions they've ever made. And the five things one British expat misses the most about life at home. Another family ditched the UK for Spain, and are loving the sun and relaxed culture. One British couple described themselves as "burnt out zombies" before moving to Bali. Another family left the UK for Cyprus and say they work half as much while still affording a home.
