BBC News21-06-2025
A man who allegedly threatened a US congressman with his vehicle in Ohio has turned himself in to the authorities, police have said. The driver was identified by the Rocky River Police Department on Friday as 36-year-old Feras Hamdan. He has pleaded not guilty to charges in relation the incident. In a video shared on social media, Max Miller, a Republican house representative, said a man honked his horn and forced him "off the road" in an attempt to get his attention. He alleged the man tried to show him a Palestinian flag, said "death to Israel" and that "he wanted to kill me and my family".
Police said they put out a warrant for Mr Hamdan's arrest after the congressman filed a criminal complaint. They said Mr Hamdan turned himself shortly after. The incident, which occurred in Rocky River, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland, is now under investigation by state and federal authorities, including the US Capitol Police. Mr Hamdan, who is reported to be a doctor in Ohio with a private practice, faces charges of aggravated menacing and ethnic intimidation. He appeared in court on Friday, where his bond was set at $500,000 (£371,500) by Rocky River Municipal Court Judge Joseph Burke. He was ordered to surrender his passport and is due back in court on 8 July. On Thursday afternoon, Miller posted a video on X describing the alleged incident, calling the driver "unhinged". "The deranged hatred in this country has grown out of control," he wrote in the post. Miller added that "as a Marine, a proud Jewish American and a staunch defender of Israel, I will not hide in the face of this blatant antisemitic violence".The incident comes at the heels of a fatal attack on two Democratic state politicians in Minnesota and their spouses, an incident that has raised the alarm on political violence in the US. State lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were shot and killed in their homes on Saturday in what has been described as a "politically motivated assassination." Another lawmaker, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were also shot but survived.Police have arrested Vance Luther Boelter in connection to the Minnesota attacks, whom investigators say had a list of 70 "targets" that included names of other Democratic politicians.President Donald Trump has also been the target of political violence, with two assassination attempts against him in 2024.

Truth about hero dad who leapt off Disney cruise to save daughter, 5, revealed – as glam doc seen cradling girl is named

THE truth about the hero dad who leapt off a Disney cruise ship to save his five-year-old daughter has been revealed. Police have officially shut down swirling rumours about the father's role in Sunday's terrifying incident. 7 7 7 7 It comes as the glamorous doctor seen cradling the rescued girl has now been named as Alyssa Charles. The child fell from the fourth deck of the $900 million Disney Dream around 11.30am as the vessel made its way back to Fort Lauderdale from the Bahamas. Her dad, 37, immediately dived roughly 50ft into the ocean in a desperate attempt to save her. He reportedly kept the little girl afloat for nearly 20 minutes before the pair were rescued by ship crew. Initially hailed as a hero, the dad soon became the target of online outrage amid widespread - and now debunked - claims that he had lifted the child onto a 42.5-inch railing to take a photo, causing her to fall. But on Wednesday, the Broward County Sheriff's Office officially refuted that viral theory. Sheriff Gregory Tony said the child was sitting on the railing and fell backwards through a porthole - but made it clear that the dad did not put her there. He said in a press briefing: 'After the girl's mother alerted her husband, who didn't see the incident, he jumped into the ocean to save his daughter. 'BSO detectives said after the 37-year-old father found his daughter, he treaded water until they were rescued by a tender that was launched from the ship.' Tony added that security video from the Disney Dream corroborated the family's version of events. 'This family is so blessed. It's great to be able to respond to good news rather than what could have been a tragic outcome,' he said. The girl's fall triggered an immediate man overboard alarm and emergency code "Mr MOB" across the ship, launching a high-speed rescue effort that played out in front of hundreds of stunned passengers. Witnesses described frantic scenes as life rings were hurled into the ocean and a yellow rescue craft raced from the vessel to reach the dad-daughter duo. Passenger Nikki Samsill Jackson told the Daily Mail: 'When they were rescued, dad had his arms around his child and he was treading water. 'Everybody was cheering.' Passenger Chandler, who spoke to People, said she heard a loud thud after the fall. 'It sounded like hitting pavement, nothing like if you jump into a pool,' she said, describing an 'awful' scream she believed came from the girl's mother. 7 7 Glam doctor revealed Once pulled from the water, it wasn't her dad but a mystery woman seen cradling the rescued girl that captured attention online. That woman has now been identified as Dr Alyssa Charles, the Disney Dream's lead physician. Charles, a pediatric and emergency care specialist from South Africa, was seen holding the girl gently in her lap, stroking her hair as she assessed her condition. The footage went viral, with people praising her for the heartwarming care she provided. 'She was holding her like her own!' one user posted. 'The rescuer rubbing her head,' another wrote, adding a crying emoji. Charles, who joined Disney Cruise Line in August last year, has previously worked at the Red Cross and travelled the world as a cruise doctor. Her sister Jasmine confirmed her identity in a proud Instagram post: 'That's my sister! Doctor on the rescue boat!' The girl appeared healthy after the terrifying ordeal, though her dad was reportedly injured while keeping her afloat and was taken to hospital after the ship returned to port. Police declined to specify the nature of his injuries. Disney has since praised its staff for their swift response. A spokesperson said: 'The crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water. 'We commend our crew members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions. 'This incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols.' Cruise officials are continuing to review how the girl was able to fall though cops have made it clear that no foul play is suspected. The Disney Dream, which carries up to 3,500 passengers and can reach speeds of 25mph, was last refurbished in 2024. It docked in Fort Lauderdale on Monday before continuing its five-day itinerary to Nassau and Disney Lookout Cay. The cruise is due to return to Florida on Saturday. 7

Girl, 9, bakes to death in car after mom left her with snacks and water while she worked

Published: | Updated: A nine-year-old Texas girl tragically died after being left inside a sweltering car while her mother was at work. The 36-year-old mom left her young daughter in the backseat of her Toyota Camry while she clocked in for her 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. shift at United States Gypsum in Galena Park on Tuesday. The mother, whose position at the construction manufacturing company is unknown, reportedly left her adolescent daughter with 'some water, the windows partially down, and proceeded to go to work for the day,' according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. It was unclear whether the mother had returned at all before the end of her shift. Gonzalez said: 'I don't know if anyone checked on the child throughout the day.' Harris County authorities were contacted by the worry-stricken mother at 2:06 p.m. First responders arrived at the scene around 3:15 p.m. and attempted CPR and other life-saving measures, ABC13 reported. The child was then transported to Harris Health Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital - 10 miles from the warehouse - where she was pronounced dead. The Harris County Sheriff said: 'A nine-year-old beautiful little girl has lost her life by no fault of her own.' He confirmed that the mother was detained, with charges likely pending. The white, four-door sedan had been parked in an unshaded area of the gated warehouse parking lot, where outside temperatures reached a brutal 97 degrees by the afternoon. Gonzalez said: 'The temperature is extremely high, as we know - I think it's at least 97 degrees. Any amount of time can be very dangerous and even fatal for a small child. A child's temperature increases at a much higher rate than an adult's.' He added: 'You can be sympathetic to her situation,' noting that it's still unclear whether lack of childcare or family issues played a role in the decision. 'It's never acceptable to leave a child in the car.' Gonzalez said the sheriff's office is continuing its investigation before any formal charges are filed. He said: 'The point is that the risk of death or harm - there's just no reconciling that in my mind at a personal level,' he said. 'You've got to make other arrangements, whether it be with your employer. It's just not worth it to put a child at risk like this for any particular reason. If you have hardships, by all means, work with neighbors, family, and social service agencies.' USG Corp. spokesperson Kathleen Prause confirmed the incident in a statement issued Tuesday night. 'I can confirm a medical emergency occurred today at a USG plant in Galena Park, TX, involving the child of an employee. Our thoughts are with the family of the child and all those impacted. 'Our top priority is always the safety and well-being of USG team members and our community. We are monitoring the situation closely and are cooperating fully with local authorities as they respond and conduct their investigation. We will provide updates as appropriate.'

BBC Verify Live: Huge blast in Ukraine and unpacking Trump's mega-bill

Update: Date: 10:04 BST Title: Fact-checking claims about Trump's 'big beautiful bill' Content: Jake HortonBBC Verify journalist US President Donald Trump's flagship 'big beautiful bill' is edging closer to becoming law, but tense negotiations are set to continue in Congress later. The bill has faced strong opposition from Democrats as well as from some in Trump's Republican Party over how much it will cost and the cuts it will make to health and welfare benefits. I'm currently working for BBC Verify in Washington and have been looking at claims made about the bill's impact on three key areas - the US national finances, medical cover, and taxes. On the first, the White House says the bill 'reduces deficits by over $2tn (£1.5tn)' - but several senior Democrats have insisted it would add trillions. The deficit is the difference between what the US government spends and the money it collects in taxes and other revenue. We've looked at various independent studies and interviewed six tax experts who all agree the 'big beautiful bill' will increase the deficit. I've written up our full fact-check which will be available on the BBC News website later. Update: Date: 09:47 BST Title: Video shows large blast at Russian munitions depot in Ukraine Content: Sebastian Vandermeersch and Fridon KiriaBBC Verify and BBC Monitoring We've verified footage showing a large explosion near the town of Khartsyzsk, in the Russian-occupied Donetsk region of Ukraine. Due to the size and intensity of the blast the location is likely to be a Russian ammunition depot. We have not yet had confirmation of what caused the explosion. We geolocated the video by identifying a distinctive school building in the foreground and matching it to satellite imagery of the area. Reverse image searches of screen grabs from the footage indicate it had not appeared online before yesterday. If this is confirmed as a Ukrainian strike, it would be the latest in a series targeting Russian ammunition storage sites – part of a broader strategy to disrupt supply lines and weaken Moscow's military capabilities.
