Panthers rookie K Ryan Fitzgerald has rough performance at Fan Fest scrimmage
Friday night's Fan Fest, held in front of a buzzing Bank of America Stadium crowd, featured the team's first big scrimmage of training camp. The kicking duties for the session belonged to undrafted rookie Ryan Fitzgerald, who got the nod over veteran Matthew Wright.
But unfortunately for the 24-year-old youngster, this practice wouldn't be one to remember, at least fondly.
Head coach Dave Canales was asked about Fitzgerald's performance afterwards.
"Yeah, he missed a couple," Canales told reporters. "So we're just learning about the guys that we have."
Fitzgerald successfully converted on just one of his three field goal attempts on the evening. His misses, per Joe Person of The Athletic, came from 48 yards and around 40 yards.
Canales was then asked if it was nice to see Fitzgerald work on the regular field goal posts instead of the skinny posts, which have been used in the practices prior.
"Yeah, it was good to see him with the whole environment," he replied. "And even right there, that situation was down three [points], to tie it up, to go to overtime. So a little extra added pressure."
Fitzgerald kicked at Florida State University for five seasons. He missed on only two of his 34 field goal tries over the past two years.
He's been in competition with Wright—a 29-year-old journeyman who has picked up stops with nine different teams since 2019.

A hidden gem of the Carolina Panthers' 2025 draft class may not be hidden for much longer. Safety Lathan Ransom put his stamp all over Tuesday's rainy outing of training camp. The rookie defensive back not only picked off starting quarterback Bryce Young, but also punctuated the workout with a sack of third-stringer Jack Plummer on the last play of 11-on-11 drills. And I couldn't be happier with where he's at and where he's headed." Ransom showed that discipline and preparation during his impressive collegiate career at Ohio State University. There, as a three-year starter and national champion, the six-foot, 206-pounder amassed 227 combined tackles, three interceptions, 3.5 sacks and three forced fumbles. Reporters also got a chance to talk to Ransom this afternoon, and he credited his standout session to the vibes from his teammates. "Yeah, I think the [defensive backs] brought a lot of energy today—between Jaycee [Horn], Mike [Jackson], Demani [Richardson], Tre [Swilling], all them, Nick [Scott]," Ransom said. "Lettin' us know that it don't matter if it's raining or snowing, we gotta go out there and show up." Panthers HC Dave Canales provides injury update on WR Hunter Renfrow
One of the early stars of Carolina Panthers training camp remained sidelined on Tuesday. Wide receiver Hutner Renfrow, who continues to deal with a hamstring injury, missed a third straight practice this morning. Head coach Dave Canales was asked about the 29-year-old veteran's status following what was a particularly rainy outing. "He is doin' great," Canales replied. "He's in return-to-play right now with our training department. He's running, he's cutting. I think it's just the load of practice that we're just trying to be smart on, and just get him completely healthy so we can really see him in these games. And I feel really strongly that he's there, but I think it's more of a capacity thing." After missing the entire 2024 campaign due to ulcerative colitis, Renfrow returned to the NFL this past spring on a one-year deal with the Panthers. The former Pro Bowler has shined throughout offseason workouts, and has made quite a bid for the team's initial 53-man roster. Canales was then asked if Renfrow will be available to play in the team's first exhibition game later this week. "We have not made the decision," he stated. "We need to have this practice tomorrow so that we can kind of regroup and see where our group is at, on both sides." The other side was without rookie outside linebacker Nic Scourton, who has also been nursing a mild hamstring injury. Canales said the 2025 second-round pick is in the "same boat" as Renfrow in terms of availability and recovery.
