England, France notch big wins to reach Euro q-finals
The Lionesses had bounced back from losing to France in their opener by routing the Netherlands 4-0 and they raced into a 4-0 halftime lead against Wales in Switzerland on Sunday following goals from Georgia Stanway, Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo.
Substitutes Beth Mead and Aggie Beever-Jones added more in the second half either side of Hannah Cain's stylish consolation for Wales.
The result saw Sarina Wiegman's team advance as runner-ups in Group D, ensuring England a potentially easier path to the final, after France beat the Netherlands 5-2 to win the group. Wales and the Netherlands are eliminated.
England will play Sweden in the quarter-finals and could then face either Norway or Italy.
Had they won the group, the Lionesses would have encountered Germany before a possible semi-final against World Cup winners and tournament favourites Spain, who plays host nation Switzerland in the last eight.
It was always going to be a tall order for Wales, on their tournament debut, to beat the reigning champions. They had lost nine of their 10 previous matches against England, only managing one draw against their neighbors and historic rivals.
In Basel, Delphine Cascarino's stunning six-minute spell in the second half helped France surged past the Netherlands for a third straight win to advance as group winners.
The French would have been eliminated by a three-goal loss and, when the Netherlands led 2-1 at one stage, rued a bad miss by Cascarino shooting over an unguarded goal.
But the San Diego Wave winger responded with a devastating burst of running and shooting to settle the game.
First, Cascarino stole the ball from the Dutch at halfway and ran directly at the defense to set up Marie-Antoinette Katoto for a neat finish in the 61st.
Cascarino was even better three minutes later, taking a high ball 50 metres (yards) from goal and dribbling directly at goal to unleash a rising shot from outside the penalty area.
In the 67th, Cascarino scored with a well-placed shot when the ball came to her after Katoto's shot struck the inside of both posts. Sakina Karchaoui added a penalty in stoppage time.
France will return to Basel to face Germany on Saturday, with the winner on a path to play Spain in the semi-finals.

Socceroos door open for Nestory Irankunda ahead of move to Watford as Popovic remembers Wilfried Zaha at Crystal Palace
There's a lesson from Crystal Palace that Socceroos coach Tony Popovic thinks of when he's asked about teenage sensation Nestory Irankunda. The 19-year-old winger is set for a move from Bayern Munich to English Championship club Watford as he continues to push his case for a spot in Popovic's 2026 World Cup squad. The former Adelaide United star hasn't featured in the Australian national team since last October, left out of the squad that sealed automatic qualification to the 2026 finals with wins over Japan and Saudi Arabia. But with the latest piece of the Socceroos' World Cup preparations falling into place, Popovic has left the door open for a possible recall for Irankunda. The Socceroos will play the United States on October 14, having already secured a two-match series against trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand in September and a clash with another co-host in Canada. News of Irankunda's imminent move to Watford comes after he struggled to break through for a Bundesliga debut since arriving in 2024. Frustrated with his lack of game time, Irankunda sealed a loan move to Grasshoppers Zurich and finished with one goal and three assists over 19 matches in the 2024-25 Swiss Super League season. Popovic just wants Irankunda, who had also been nursing a hamstring injury that ruled him out of action for the Australia Under 20s in June, to continue growing. Previous coaches like Adelaide's Carl Veart and Olyroos boss Tony Vidmar have been open about concerns over his perceived maturity. Asked about the five-cap forward's attitude, Popovic pointed to something he learnt while working as an assistant at Crystal Palace — where he played 123 games — under Dougie Freedman. "We had [then] 17-year-old Wilfried Zaha who was the most ill-disciplined, never came on time, wanted to walk out 10 minutes before training, didn't want to do the pre-activation," Popovic said on Tuesday. "And it frustrated me. And Dougie said, 'You've got to see. You're just a little bit blinded at the moment. You need to see the big picture'. "Let's understand the kid a bit more; where's he come from? What's his home life like? And you might understand a bit more. "As soon as Dougie made me go to his apartment and see how the boy was living, it totally changed me. "Sometimes it works out. Sometimes it doesn't, but I would never allow anyone to tell me that it's because of an attitude or a character that I'm not picking a player." Popovic insisted Irankunda, who was born to Burundian parents in a Tanzanian refugee camp, still had a future within the Socceroos squad. "It's obviously fresh news for us as well. I don't know if that's definitely done yet but if it is, wonderful," Popovic said. "He got to Bayern Munich because he has talent. It's undeniable, but what I believe [is] he's learning. "Talent's not enough. It's never been enough, and it never will be enough. "Hopefully, this next move can develop him further, and whether that's an immediate impact with us or not, it gives him a better chance of course. "The impression people sometimes have from the outside, which I totally understand, is that if a player doesn't get called up, that equates to you not liking the player — it's far from that." Popovic, who wore the green and gold 58 times as a player, including at Germany 2006, remains unbeaten as Socceroos boss after eight matches in charge. Taking over from Graham Arnold last September, the former Western Sydney Wanderers boss has enjoyed five wins and three draws — highlighted by crucial victories over Japan and Saudi Arabia. Their clash against the US will be the first between the two nations since Australia, who recently moved up two places to 24th in the world rankings, were beaten 3-1 in the final warm-up match before their 2010 World Cup campaign in South Africa. The US are currently ranked 15th in world and earlier this month were beaten 2-1 by Mexico, the third of next year's co-hosts, in the Concacaf Gold Cup final. AAP

Socceroos secure warm-up with second World Cup co-host
The pieces to the Socceroos' 2026 FIFA World Cup preparations continue to fall into place with confirmation of an international against the United States later this year. Having already secured a two-match series against trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand in September and a clash with another co-host in Canada on Friday October 10 (Saturday AEST), the Socceroos will face Mauricio Pochettino's side in Colorado four days later. It will be the first clash between the two since the Socceroos, who recently moved up two places to 24th in the world rankings, were beaten 3-1 in the final warm-up match before their 2010 World Cup campaign in South Africa. "Another important match for our preparation that quickly follows our fixture against Canada," Socceroos coach Tony Popovic said. "When looking at our schedule following direct qualification, we identified travelling to North America as a high priority. Our results over the last 10 months have now given us the chance to play matches against two of the tournament hosts, an opportunity we intend to make the most of. "The United States are another strong opponent and a great test for our squad. There will be much to take from our experience in this camp, and we're looking forward to the challenge." Popovic, who wore the green and gold 58 times as a player, including at Germany 2006, remains unbeaten as Socceroos boss after eight matches in charge. Taking over from Graham Arnold last September, Popovic has enjoyed five wins and three draws - highlighted by crucial wins over Japan and Saudi Arabia. The US are currently ranked 15th in world and earlier this month were beaten 2-1 by Mexico, the third of next year's co-hosts, in the Concacaf Gold Cup final.

Arsenal face battle race to sign Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze
Bayern Munich will go head-to-head with Arsenal in the race to sign Eberechi Eze. Arsenal, who are due to announce the signing of Viktor Gyökeres imminently, remain desperate for the Crystal Palace star. Mikel Arteta sees him as the 'final piece in the jigsaw' in a new-look line-up that the Spaniard hopes will see the Gunners finally win the Premier League. But The Sun reports that Arsenal face a major battle to land Eze in the shape of the German champions. Bayern's manager Vincent Kompany wants to reunite Eze with former teammate Michael Olise, as he plots an all-out assault on the Champions League. Bayern have just lost Jamal Musiala to a broken leg and dislocated ankle and they have shortlisted Eze as they seek to strengthen their attack. The German giants missed out on Florian Wirtz to Liverpool. They have also lost both Leroy Sané and Thomas Müller. As a result they are also said to be exploring a deal for out-of-favour Chelsea attacker Christopher Nkunku. Eze has a £68m release clause and is attracting interest this summer after a stellar season in which he scored the winner for Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final. The 27-year-old scored 14 goals and provided 11 assists for Palace last season and also netted his first England goal in a 3-0 win over Latvia in March. With Arsenal yet to make an official bid for Eze, Bayern could swoop. * Manchester United's five outcasts have all been called back to work – but they will only train once the rest of the squad have gone home. Ruben Amorim decided 10 days ago that Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia should stay away from first team training. They were given extra time off to find new clubs – but as yet nothing has been finalised. * Morgan Gibbs-White has reported to Nottingham Forest for pre-season training despite heavy links to Tottenham in recent days. * Newcastle have submitted a club-record £69.5million bid for Hugo Ekitike.
