Minnesota's Sounds of Blackness celebrates 54 years of musical magic

CBS News20-02-2025
The Twin Cities-based group Sounds of Blackness is celebrating 54 years of performing this month.
"Thankful," the group's newest song, is nominated for a NAACP Image Award.
"This NAACP Image Award is extra special because the song 'Thankful,' written by our own Jamecia Bennett and Buddy McClain, is in honor of Amir Locke, who was tragically killed a couple of years ago," said Gary Hines, the groups musical director and producer.
Bennett, the group's lead singer, says she led with her heart when writing the lyrics to "Thankful."
"We have to go in and find that in ourselves to bring that out and still give the world hope," Bennett said.
Hines has led this group for most of its 54 years and says he is proud that the ensemble still stands as a cultural speaking voice for Black America.
"From day one, Sounds of Blackness has had as our goal not only to praise God by inspiring people of all backgrounds through Black music, but also to be in the vanguard of the movement for social justice and equality," Hines said.
He says Sounds of Blackness is part of — and heirs to — the legacy of singers who have paved the way in the quest for social justice.
"Artists have always been in the vanguard of that movement, whether it was Billy Holiday with 'Strange Fruit,' protesting lynchings. Whether it was James Brown with 'Say it Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud,'" he said.
Now focused on spreading a message to the next generation, Sounds of Blackness is using all genres of music — gospel, R&B, soul, jazz, hip-hop, country and rock & roll — to reach for the nation's soul.
Bennett says she is proud to continue the group's original mission.
"It is definitely big shoes to fill to continue to minister because that's exactly what it is," she said. "To continue to minister this message of hope and love and being grateful and thankful for everyday of our lives. But also being aware and woke on what is happening today."
The NAACP Image Awards airs Saturday at 7 p.m. on BET.

Anti Social Social Club's Latest Collaboration Celebrates 20 Years of The Breakfast Club

Summary: Anti Social Social Club(ASSC) has teamed up with one of London's favourite brunch spots,The Breakfast Club, to release a limited-edition capsule that celebrates the restaurant's 20th anniversary. The collection includes bold graphic hoodies, tees and an apron that feature co-branded designs, blending London's brunch culture with ASSC's rebellious streetwear spirit. Since its inception in 2014, the Los Angeles-based streetwear brand's unique and unexpected collaborations have helped to propel its cult-like following. Key design features in the collection include ASSC's capitalised logo coupled with a 'yolk yellow' Breakfast Club logo cleanly placed underneath. (It's the same color the founders painted the café back in 2005 when they first opened, long before the avocado-and-egg-obsessed era took rise.) Playful graphics are also seen sprinkled across select pieces including cartoon characters of an egg, bacon, and a salt shaker – visuals that channel the eatery's unapologetic love for comfort-food through a contemporary streetwear lens. Adding to the overall wholesomeness of the collaboration, the café's original location on D'Arblay Street in Soho, London, served as the perfect backdrop to the campaign shoot, with both front of house staff and chefs modelling pieces from the collection. The restaurant is even updating its official uniform policy and staff across Breakfast Club locations nationwide will be wearing pieces from the ASSC collaboration, helping to kick off the company's 20th year with a fresh look. 'This might just be the coolest thing we've ever been a part of,' says Tom Williams, Head of Marketing at The Breakfast Club. The collection launches exclusively through ASSC'swebsiteon August 2.

Paris Hilton's $63M mansion buy led US home sales in June

Paris Hilton and her husband led the US real estate market in June with their pricey purchase of Mark Wahlberg's former megamansion. The mammoth Beverly Hills estate cost Hilton and her venture capitalist husband, Carter Reum, a cool $63 million. Their purchase topped out Redfin's top 10 list of the country's most expensive home sales, as did five other California-based transactions. Agents told CNBC the recent ranking reflects a pattern of luxury real estate regaining momentum in fire-ravaged Los Angeles. Advertisement 9 Paris Hilton, pictured in June. Hilton was candid about the loss in a post to her millions of Instagram followers. 'Sitting with my family, watching the news, and seeing our home in Malibu burn to the ground on live TV is something no one should ever have to experience,' the heiress and influencer wrote. The sheer scale of her family's new home makes its eye-watering $63 million price a little more understandable. 9 A sun-lit dining room. A main house and a guesthouse include a collective 12 bedrooms — as well as a wine and cigar cellar, a home theater and staff quarters. Advertisement The mansion's sellers made a tidy profit from the deal, CNBC reported, even accounting for Los Angeles' hefty mansion tax. Their success makes Mark Wahlberg's $55 million sale of the home in 2023 look sadly premature. Hilton and Reum's purchase is currently the fifth priciest home sale of 2025, according to Redfin. Nicole Plaxen, an agent with the Beverly Hills Estates, told CNBC that LA's luxury market is being driven by displaced homeowners like Hilton. Plaxen also noted a return in foreign buyers, especially from China. 9 The Palisades Fire claimed modest starter homes and A-lister mansions alike. London Entertainment for NY Post 9 Hilton closed on the home five months after losing her family's Malibu beach house. Paul Barnaby The other 50% of Redfin's chart-topping June sales took place elsewhere: Three in coastal Florida, one in Manhattan and another on Lake Tahoe's Nevada side. All 10 sold for more than $30 million. New York's appearance in the June rankings was credited to the sale of a 50-foot-wide mansion in Midtown Manhattan. The sprawling 22-bedroom residence just off Fifth Avenue was built for a cousin of J.P. Morgan during the city's Gilded Age. The seller, previously reported at real estate developer Orin Wilf, cinched a $38.2 million deal on the property. Neither Wilf's sale nor Hilton's purchase comes even close to the year's most expensive deal so far. That superlative belongs squarely with the $225 million sale of three adjacent beachfront properties in Naples, Florida. The April transaction marked the second-highest home sale ever in the US, trailing Ken Griffin's $238 million penthouse purchase at 220 Central Park South in early 2019.

BigXThaPlug talks Beyoncé featuring his song on tour: 'I became a part of the Beyhive'

Beyoncé Knowles-Carter featured music from emerging rapper BigXThaPlug in one of the interludes on her "Cowboy Carter" tour. Not only is he confident the exposure will have a lasting impact on his career, he says he's gained a community. Beyoncé recently concluded her Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin' Circuit Tour at Allegiant Stadium in Vegas on July 26 after 32 shows in nine cities across the U.S. and Europe. The tour proved to be a revolutionary spectacle filled with fashion, different music genres and cultural commentary. While the singer was known to change elements like the set list and high-fashion wardrobe, some components stayed the same at each stop — including an interlude that featured BigXThaPlug's song "The Largest." Born Xavier Landrum, the 27-year-old artist has emerged as one of pop culture's rising stars. This year alone, his crossover music has allowed him to step foot on a wide range of stages — from Coachella Music Festival to Morgan Wallen's inaugural Sand In My Boots Festival and CMA Fest. When asked about the impact of Beyoncé including his music on her tour, his initial response focused on the community aspect. "I became a part of the Beyhive," he told the USA TODAY Network, joking that he didn't need to submit an application or know Beyoncé's full discography to be welcomed with open arms. "I got to skip all of that and just be in the Beyhive, so I'm forever grateful and blessed for that for sure," he said. He expects fans' embrace to continue. "Of course it's going crazy in the blogs right now, but as far as like streams and everything — they're listening right now, but I'm not going to see (the full effect) until like maybe three months from now," he said. "Everything's going to spike up out of nowhere ... and I'm going to know exactly where it came from — the Beyhive." In the last five years, the Dallas-bred rapper has released two studio albums and a handful of EPs. BigX's upcoming project will feature country tracks and a mix of other trap and hip-hop sounds. As fans know, Beyoncé first released her eighth studio album, "Cowboy Carter," in March 2024. It has since made history and broken multiple records. As Beyoncé's first country album, she deliberately featured country legends and emerging Black country artists while putting a spotlight on country music's Black roots. BigX said by including his song on her tour, Beyoncé underscored the importance of his music. "It not only signifies what I'm doing, but it shows that I'm not the only one that is willing to do it," he said. "It makes me feel good that there's somebody out there that's trying to push what I'm pushing." He ended with a short message to the singer, "I love you Beyoncé."
