Dropped from official holiday calendar by L-G, ruling NC starts preparations for ‘Martyrs Day' in Srinagar

The Hindua day ago
Ruling National Conference (NC) on Monday (July 7, 2025) held a special meeting in Srinagar to review the preparations on the occasion of the death anniversary of Begum Akbar Jehan Abdullah, wife of the party founder Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, and 'Martyrs' Day' on 13th July.
The preparations assumed significance because J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha removed the 'Martyrs Day' from the official holiday calendar of the government after the Centre ended J&K's special constitutional status in 2019.
'A review meeting was convened at the party headquarters, Nawa-e-Subha, Srinagar, to assess the ongoing arrangements for the annual observance of the death anniversary of Madar-e-Maharban Begum Akbar Jehan Abdullah (on July 11) and Martyrs' Day on 13th July. The meeting was chaired by the General Secretary, Haji Ali Muhammad Sagar,' a NC spokesman said.
Mr. Sagar directed the party cadre to ensure a special prayer ceremony is held at the Naqsband Sahib graveyard where 22 locals, who lost their lives in the rebellion against the Dogra rule, are buried.
Top J&K government officials, including the then Governor, would join the regional parties in paying tributes to those killed by the soldiers of the Dogra monarch in 1931 in Kashmir. However, no official ceremony is held at the graveyard of those who were killed in 1931 after 2019.
There is a growing demand from the regional parties to reincorporate July 13 in the holiday calendar of J&K. The ruling NC too advocated its inclusion but failed to do so because of the special powers granted to the L-G in the Union Territory (UT).
'The government should declare July 13 as a gazetted holiday in memory of the martyrs of 1931. The 'Martyrs' Day' should be observed at the State level, as it used to be,' J&K Apni Party president Altaf Bukhari said.
'This government is in danger only because of its underperformance and its failure to fulfil promises made to the people. Otherwise, it has a strong mandate for a full five-year term,' he added.

NC decides to observe July 13 as Martyrs' Day

SRINAGAR: National Conference has decided to observe July 13 as Martyrs' Day to commemorate to the death of 22 Kashmiris at the hands of Dogra soldiers during a protest on that day in 1931. 'Our stand on July 13 is clear. We have profound respect for the martyrs of that day. We will observe it, regardless of whether it is declared a public holiday or not,' party spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar said. He said July 13 represents a collective struggle of the people of Jammu and Kashmir against the Dogra rulers and should not be given any religious colour. Party chief Farooq Abdullah said, 'These were the people who sacrificed their lives to free Jammu and Kashmir from monarchy.' The party on Monday held a meeting to finalize arrangements for the day. In Jan 2020, six months after the abrogation of Article 370, the state govt removed from the list of public holidays July 13 and Dec 5, National Conference founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah's birth anniversary. On Monday, J&K Apni Party chief Altaf Bukhari urged the govt 'to declare July 13 as a gazetted holiday in memory of the martyrs of 1931.' In March, PDP legislator Waheed Parra brought a resolution in the assembly, demanding the restoration of July 13 as a public holiday. BJP legislator Sunil Sharma objected to his resolution, claiming that the 22 Kashmiris killed by Dogra forces in 1931 were 'not martyrs, but traitors.' Sharma's remark evoked protests from National Conference, PDP, and Congress. The Speaker later expunged Sharma's remarks from the official record.

Addressing a tourism secretaries' conference in Srinagar, Sinha said while security forces had a huge role in combating terrorism in J&K, the role of society was no less. 'Terrorists' attempt to draw their sustenance from society should be foiled,' he said. 'Street protests against Pakistan-backed terrorists is a good sign to establish permanent peace in the Valley. Entire Jammu and Kashmir must rise and make sure terrorists have no place in this beautiful Union Territory,' Sinha said. Union minister for Culture and Tourism, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, was also present on the occasion. The LG said the conference was a befitting reply to terrorism and reflected J&K's march towards peace, progress and prosperity. 'God has truly been generous to Jammu and Kashmir. This land, adorned with snow-capped peaks, shimmering lakes, apple-laden orchards, temples and rolling meadows, is a living canvas of natural beauty, spirituality and peace,' he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One of the Most Successful Investors of All Time, Warren Buffett, Recommends: 5 Books for Turning... We have ensured that the benefits of tourism reach every corner of the UT and transform lives.' Sinha said the G20 Tourism Working Group meeting held in the UT was a defining moment that helped in building J&K's brand in global tourism. This was followed by major international and national events, which presented J&K as 'a destination for luxury, film, entertainment and global engagement', he added. The administration was committed to promoting sustainable tourism under SPREAD (Strategic Promotion and Revamping of Emerging Alternate Destinations in J&K), the LG said. 'This strategy aims to mitigate environmental pressure by diversifying tourist activities to lesser-known and emerging destinations.' The government hoped to bring nine emerging destinations on the tourism map and provide direct employment to at least five lakh people in the first year, Sinha said.
