Vertu: Vintage outside, opulent inside
Vertu was founded in 1998 as a luxury arm of Nokia and quickly became the go-to brand for celebrities, royalty, and high-net-worth individuals who wanted their phones to be more than just functional—they had to be fashionable. The Economist once captured Vertu's ethos perfectly: "If you can spend $20,000 on a watch, why not on a phone?"
The brand was designed to elevate the mobile phone to the level of jewelry, and Fahadh's model reflects exactly that.

More than a phone, a philosophy?
Fahadh Faasil's decision to carry a keypad phone might seem odd to some, but it aligns with the actor's minimalistic public persona. Known for his intense, layered performances in
Malayalam cinema
and beyond, Fahadh keeps a low profile off-screen. While many celebrities are launching apps or flaunting foldable tech, his old-school choice suggests a certain intentional detachment from the hyper-connected world.

Perhaps it's a nod to a simpler time, or perhaps it's a conscious effort to stay grounded while riding the high waves of stardom. Either way, it speaks volumes—quietly.
'Mareesan' gears up for release
Fahadh is all set to return to the big screen in Mareesan, a travel thriller directed by Sudeesh Shankar. The film, which also stars legendary Tamil actor Vadivelu, has already created buzz with its teaser and soundtrack. The recently released single 'Fa Fa', written by Madhan Karky and composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, blends philosophy and humour in a way few others can.
The teaser cleverly uses the iconic track 'Aaha Inba Nilavinile...' from Mayabazaar to hint at tension and adventure between the lead characters as they embark on a journey through fields, towns, and hidden corners of South India. The film, which features actors like Vivek Prasanna, Renuka, and Sithara in key roles, is scheduled to release on 25 July, 2025.

Nokia's India net sales fall 6% on-year to ₹3,148.05 crore in Q2FY25
NEW DELHI: Finnish telecom gear maker Nokia reported a 6% year-on-year decline in its India net sales to 310 million euros (~₹3,148.05 crore) in the second quarter of fiscal year 2025 (Q2FY25), mainly dragged by a fall in its mobile networks business. Nokia, which follows the January-December financial year, had posted net sales of 329 million euros in Q2FY24 for the India market. 'Net sales in Asia Pacific (APAC) decreased in the second quarter, driven by declines in Mobile Networks, particularly in Greater China and India. Network Infrastructure (NI) saw broad-based growth across APAC. Cloud and Network Services saw growth in India and Rest of APAC which was offset by a decline in Greater China,' the vendor said in its earnings statement released on Thursday. This is in sharp contrast with its Swedish rival Ericsson, which has reported a 28% year-on-year fall in sales in the market area South East Asia, Oceania and India at 5.5 billion crowns (~₹4,917 crore) in the April-June 2025 quarter, weighed down by a pause in fifth-generation (5G) network investments by Indian telecom carriers. India, however, remained second among the top five countries by sales at 6% in the January to June period of 2025 for Ericsson, a company spokesperson told ET earlier. Nokia's mobile networks' net sales slid by 17% year-on-year in Q2FY25, primarily due to a decline in the Americas, and to some extent, APAC, while Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) grew slightly. 'Mobile Networks' net sales declined 13%, primarily related to the prior year settlement benefit and also due to project timing in India,' Justin Hotard, president & CEO, Nokia, said in the earnings statement. Nokia's cloud & network services net sales increased by 10% year-on-year in Q2FY25, mainly driven by core networks. 'In APAC, growth in Asia Pacific and Japan along with India was partially offset by a decline in Greater China,' it said. The network infrastructure net sales were up by 25% year-on-year in the fiscal second quarter of 2025, which included a full quarter of Infinera's financials. Nokia's network infrastructure business comprises its home broadband and optical transmission equipment business, which serves mostly enterprises, governments and webscalers, among others, while mobile networks involve supply of telecom equipment for telcos' retail network such as 4G and 5G. READ MORE | Ericsson's sales in South East Asia, Oceania & India slump by 28% on-year in Q2FY25 Nokia lowers full year operating profit outlook Nokia's overall sales grew slightly by 2% year-on-year to 4,546 million euros in Q2FY25. 'We are facing two headwinds to our full year operating profit outlook, which are outside of our control: currency due to the weaker US Dollar, and tariffs. The currency has an approximately 230 million euros negative impact relative to our expectations at the start of the year, with 90 million euros resulting from non-cash venture fund currency revaluations,' Hotard said. He added that the current tariff levels are forecasted to impact operating profit by 50 million euros to 80 million euros, inclusive of those in Q2. 'Considering these two headwinds, we decided it was prudent at this point to lower our comparable operating profit outlook to a range of 1.6 billion euros to 2.1 billion euros from the prior range of 1.9 billion euros to 2.4 billion euros,' the chief executive said. In India, Ericsson along with Nokia and South Korean Samsung, have commercial 5G deals with top telecom carriers Reliance Jio , Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (Vi). While Vi switched on its commercial 5G services in March, and is currently focused on expansion in 17 priority circles by August, its peers Jio and Airtel already have nationwide 5G networks and provide 5G FWA to customers. Earlier, Ericsson and Nokia saw a surge in India sales from the fourth quarter of 2022 and first quarter of 2023, respectively, shortly after Airtel and Jio began rolling out 5G networks nationally from October 2022. However, both telcos have concluded their 5G network deployments in the first half of 2024 and are now focused on boosting revenues and driving monetisation of their 5G businesses.

‘Maareesan' movie review: Vadivelu, Fahadh Faasil steal the show in this slow-burn suspense flick
What do we like most about Vadivelu? If you said his comical expressions and reactions, you'd be mostly right. From Friends to Vetrikodi Kattu, Vadivelu's body language and facial expressions when delivering funny lines have filled awkward silences in many drawing rooms as they play out on television. This continues to date on Tamil comedy channels. In Maareesan, his latest feature, written by V. Krishna Moorthy and directed by Sudheesh Sankar, Vadivelu sheds all those strengths. Here, he's Velayudham, an Alzheimer's patient who has largely forgotten his past. In his introduction sequence, he is chained and calling out to someone whom he thinks is his son. Only, he isn't. The stranger is Dhayalan (Fahadh Faasil), a goofy small-time thief who has broken in. In his mind, this is a quick job — a man tied to a chain and an empty house. But there's only he spent more time with this man short of memory. The two decide to go on a road trip, and that changes things drastically. While the first half is a slow burn, reminiscent of many Malayalam films for its pace and sweet nothing-ness, an arresting interval block sets things up nicely for a thriller. Maaresan (Tamil) Director: Sudheesh Sankar Cast: Vadivelu, Fahadh Faasil, Kovai Sarala, Vivek Prasanna Runtime: 154 minutes Storyline: A small-time thief befriends a stranger in a bid to rob him The twists are many, but they all arrive slowly, like a character's change of intention and the subsequent actions. Do we really know someone fully? Maareesan explores this aspect in good measure by taking up a protagonist who has dementia. That itself is a triumph — because forgetfulness is a big ordeal. What is life without memories, the lead character asks nonchalantly, and you feel sympathetic to his state. And what is it about FaFa, as Fahadh Faasil is popularly called? How do all these mischievous shades of grey in the universe attract this actor? Slightly taking off from his performance in his Malayalam film Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum, a film that kickstarts with him swallowing a necklace that he stole, Fahadh once again aces the goofy part in Maareesan, using his shrug-off mannerisms to good effect. His camaraderie with Vadivelu — a collab that started with Mari Selvaraj's Maamannan— is heartfelt. We wish more films featuring them roll out. When the first promo material of Maareesan came out, I wondered if it would be another Meiyazhagan, that is, a film in which two people get to know each other better. Maareesan has that aspect going for it in the first half, but in far less impactful measure. The atmosphere-building is leisurely done; the two keep going off on rides and taking loo breaks. We keep getting scenes after scenes with the two, with very little happening. Sometimes I wish Vadivelu would just break into an impromptu comedy sequence, but he stays strictly in character, as he must. A flashback could have been trimmed, a song plays out for eternity, and characters other than the leads are less explored. But when it's a film about forgetfulness that cheekily weaves in a popular Ilaiyaraaja number — the lyrics of which go 'Nethu oruthara oruthara maranthom' — it deserves a look in. Maareesan is currently running in theatres
