Chargers rave about wideout McConkey, with Harbaugh saying he's 'uncoverable' 1 on 1

Yahoo6 days ago
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Wide receiver Ladd McConkey is making such an impression with the Los Angeles Chargers that coach Jim Harbaugh says he's 'uncoverable' one on one and linebacker Daiyan Henley is still arguing about a catch the second-year pro made in workouts a month ago.
McConkey is coming off a sensational season in which he set team rookie records with 82 catches and 1,149 yards receiving, while scoring seven touchdowns.
Everyone is expecting more from McConkey — except for maybe Henley during their friendly practice rivalry — as he and quarterback Justin Herbert continue to develop the chemistry that has made them one of the NFL's top pass-and-catch duos.
Harbaugh, who brought the Chargers to their former hometown for two days of training camp practices this week, said fellow receiver Quentin Johnston and Ladd are 'playing at an elite level.'
Then he added about McConkey: "Ladd, he's even better than he was last year. It's not like hyperbole. It's not. He's uncoverable right now by one guy. That's awesome.'
McConkey let out a little chuckle when asked about Harbaugh's comment.
'I don't know about that,' McConkey said Wednesday at the University of San Diego, where Harbaugh began his head coaching career in 2004. "Obviously, as receivers, like yeah, we're striving for that. But other guys, they're getting paid on the other side of the ball, too. You're going to win some and lose some. Hopefully I win more than I lose.
'It's obviously a great feeling knowing he has confidence in me,' said McConkey, a second-round draft pick out of Georgia in 2024. "You go out there and make plays, he believes in me, go out and show him what I'm about.'
After completing 332 of 504 passes for 3,870 yards and 23 touchdowns last year, Herbert has the most completions (1,945) and yards passing (21,093) by a player in his first five seasons in NFL history.
Herbert said McConkey is 'the perfect combination of athleticism and intelligence. The way he understands the game of football and how he sees defenses, I think that's what makes him like that. he's just got a great understanding of how people are going to try to guard him and where the leverage is and just the way to break it. He's done such a great job with the quarterbacks, just being friendly and always being in the right spot, so it's been huge to see.'
Offensive coordinator Greg Roman said the Chargers are 'hoping for a long, long fruitful career for Ladd,' and his relationship with Herbert will be a big part of it.
'I think we're seeing that right now. It takes two to tango and those guys getting more time on task together, more chemistry, 'Hey, if you see this, I want you to hook up here and I'll put it on your inside shoulder,' those types of things, those next-level type things," Roman said.
The coordinator said there were a few times during the first four games last year where McConkey 'wasn't perfect at all. We had to correct some things, a couple plays in particular. He learned from it and it never happened again. He got that and he moved on and he kept climbing the ladder and you saw that chemistry grow.'
McConkey said there's plenty to work on despite his success last year, including running better routes.
'When I go back and watch games, I want to just eat myself up over it because there are so many plays we left out there last year that we've been working on throughout this offseason," he said. "There's so much more to gain and we're going to continue to try and build on that and hopefully it takes off as the season goes.'
During workouts last month at the team's base in El Segundo, McConkey did a quick curl route in the end zone. Herbert threw it low and Henley, heading into his third year, went down with the receiver. Harbaugh signaled touchdown, but Henley still disputes that.
Henley was asked about a sack during practice on Wednesday and immediately pivoted to last month's disputed pass play.
"I watched the playback. I hope you watched the playback. The ball hit the ground. OK, well I've got the tape. You know how you guys are, offense, offense, offense.'
Asked about the rivalry with Henley, McConkey said: 'He hasn't come over there for one-on-ones yet, so still waiting on that one. It's all fun and games. Obviously, Daiyan's a heck of a player. but if we line up one on one, I like my chances.'
The Chargers played in San Diego for 56 seasons before moving to Los Angeles in 2017 after failing to secure a deal for a new stadium. They pay $1 a year to play at SoFi Stadium, built by Rams owner Stan Kroenke.
The Chargers were 11-6 last year before losing at Houston in the wild card round.
Tickets for Tuesday's practice were distributed to active-duty military and veterans, and Wednesday's tickets went to season ticket holders. Neither day's crowds came close to filling 6,500-seat Torero Stadium.

Giants, Jets head coaches speak about mass shooting at building of NFL headquarters

The New York City mass shooting Monday has hit close to home for sports fans. Mayor Eric Adams said in a press conference Tuesday the shooter, identified as Shane Tamura, appeared to have targeted the National Football League. The shooting occurred at the same building as the league's headquarters in Manhattan. The New York Giants and Jets play their home games just miles away from the league offices, and both teams' head coaches offered condolences. "You all saw what happened at 345 Park Ave. Tragic. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people that were affected in that tragedy, here with the Giants," Giants head coach Brian Daboll said at training camp Tuesday. Jets head coach Aaron Glenn added, "I wish it was a better morning. The thing that happened yesterday at the league office, as an organization, our thoughts and prayers go out to all the families. It's always tough to hear things like that and really try to stay focused. But you have to because you have a job to do. But you think about the families that go through that, and it's tough. It's tough." A spokesperson for the New York Police Department confirmed to Fox News Digital that Tamura had mentioned the NFL in a handwritten "suicide note," claiming he had CTE. The National Football League Players' Association (NFLPA) released a statement early Tuesday morning regarding the shooting that killed four people, including an NYPD officer. "We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred yesterday in New York City. 345 Park Avenue is a part of our football family, and we at the NFLPA extend our sincere condolences and support to the people who work in this building and to the families of those who lost their lives," the NFLPA said. "We also want to express our deep gratitude to the law enforcement and emergency personnel who responded to those impacted." Adams said the shooter was trying to get to the NFL's HQ but took the wrong elevator bank. One NFL employee was "seriously injured" in the shooting, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a memo to NFL employees obtained by Fox News Digital. The shooter was found dead on the 33rd floor, where he also killed another woman, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. NYC Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Tamura had a history of mental health problems.

Warner will be the commentator on YouTube's broadcast of the Friday night Week One Chargers-Chiefs game in Brazil, according to YouTube has not yet hired a play-by-play broadcaster. A Hall of Fame quarterback, Warner calls Monday Night Football's national radio broadcast each week and often calls European games on NFL Network. YouTube also plans to have some of its popular influencers hosting their own streams of the game. The NFL season will kick off on Thursday, September 4, in Philadelphia, with the Eagles hosting the Cowboys on NBC and Peacock. Then the Chiefs-Chargers YouTube game is the following night, the second straight year that the league has had a Week One Friday night game in Brazil.

Lions scrimmage notes: Aidan Hutchinson impresses, Brian Branch excels

ALLEN PARK, Mich. — It was scrimmage day for Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions. He was as giddy as you'd imagine. 'This will be good, it'll be competitive,' Campbell said this morning. 'First chance to get a pretty good dose without it being scripted. Here we go, man.' Campbell said he wanted to get the starters and key reserves the majority of the workload since they won't play in Thursday's Hall of Fame Game vs. the Los Angeles Chargers. The first-team offense and defense faced one another for seven drives, with the second-team getting three. Advertisement Here's what we saw. This recap focuses on the starting reps, since that's what the Lions tried to do. Here are the seven drives featuring the starting offense vs. the starting defense (with some reserves mixed in). Drive No. 1: Drive No. 2: Drive No. 3: Drive No. 4: Drive No. 5: Drive No. 6: Drive No. 7: Hutchinson, as you can see above, did some damage on Tuesday. He recorded at least three sacks (four if you count the final series) and had a run stops as well. If you're eager to chalk this up to reps vs. second-team tackle Dan Skipper, you should know that Hutchinson beat Sewell in Tuesday's practice and has gone toe-to-toe with Sewell and won throughout training camp. The most notable takeaway here is that Hutchinson looks phenomenal. There's no rust, no hesitation, no restrictions in place. He looks like the guy who led the league in pressures, sacks and win rate before his injury. And that's all you could want as a Lions fan. The Lions held a scrimmage this morning. Starting offense and defense got the bulk of the work. Aidan Hutchinson was the best player on the field. Had him with three sacks (with a fourth the team didn't credit). He looks phenomenal. — Colton Pouncy (@colton_pouncy) July 29, 2025 Gibbs wanted to wear No. 1 this year. That went to Williams, with Gibbs taking on No. 0 this year. He'll have to settle for being the No. 1 back instead. One thing that's been clear as these practices have unfolded is that Gibbs is usually the first back on the field with the starters. In past years, you'd often see Montgomery get the first bulk of carries before Gibbs takes the field. There was a clear pecking order in practice, and that often translated to games. Maybe it's nothing to read into, but there are a few factors to consider. This doesn't mean Montgomery won't be used. He's looked phenomenal himself. But it seems like the Lions want Gibbs on the field as much as possible, while maintaining a fair workload for each. Something to monitor. If you do a command-F search of this article, you'll probably find Branch's name littered throughout the scrimmage recap. He was everywhere. If you told me you thought Branch was the best player on the field, I wouldn't argue it. He spent time in the box, back deep at safety and in the slot at nickel. His PBU vs. St. Brown was one of the plays of the day — in man coverage, asked to cover an All-Pro WR who wins routinely — and did it without much trouble. He shot out of a cannon for a sack on the fourth drive. It's July 29. If Branch stays healthy, he'll be an All-Pro this year. Check back on this in early January.
