Soccer-James double helps England bounce back at Euro 2025 with 4-0 win over Dutch
ZURICH (Reuters) -England's Lauren James scored twice, while Georgia Stanway and Ella Toone also found the net to put the defending women's European champions firmly back in the driver's seat at Euro 2025 with an emphatic 4-0 victory over the Netherlands on Wednesday.
Four days after a lacklustre 2-1 loss to France made Wednesday a must-win match, England came out firing on all cylinders in front of a festive crowd that included Britain's Prince William.
James put England on the scoresheet in the 22nd minute when goalkeeper Hannah Hampton picked out Alessia Russo with a stunning long ball. Russo slipped it to James on the edge of the box who worked the ball onto her left foot before unleashing a screamer into the top corner.
Stanway doubled England's lead seconds before halftime when the Dutch struggled to clear the ball and the midfielder was there to fizz a first-time shot past wrong-footed goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar.
An unmarked James completed her double in the 60th with an easy shot from inside the box, and Toone added more misery for the Dutch seven minutes later. Russo held up the ball in the penalty area before sending it to a running Toone, who calmly slotted home.

Soccer-Jonker believes Dutch women still among world's best despite historical loss
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - UEFA Women's Euro 2025 - Group D - England v Netherlands - Stadion Letzigrund, Zurich, Switzerland - July 9, 2025 Netherlands coach Andries Jonker looks on REUTERS/Annegret Hilse/File Photo ZURICH (Reuters) -Outgoing Netherlands coach Andries Jonker vowed to prove his team are still one of the best in women's football despite their crushing 4-0 defeat by England at Euro 2025 on Wednesday that left them on the brink of elimination. The Dutch, champions in 2017, suffered their heaviest defeat in a major tournament as the Lionesses dominated at Stadion Letzigrund and neutralised the Netherlands' all-time leading goalscorer Vivianne Miedema. Jonker, however, remained confident ahead of a decisive final group-stage clash with France on Sunday. "We thought we could play toe-to-toe against England," Jonker told a press conference. "We wanted to play for victory. We want to play to qualify for the quarter-finals. That this is the biggest defeat at a major finals? I don't care." The Netherlands adopted an aggressive formation with Jill Roord and Chasity Grant joining Miedema in attack, but the strategy faltered. When asked whether a more defensive approach would have been prudent against the Euro 2022 champions, Jonker defended his tactics. "Potentially, we can be a part of the top (teams), but what is the definition of the top?" Jonker said. "Spain, in my view, is the top. They are the very best, the number one. Eight, nine to ten countries follow and we can be a part of those, but not today." The Netherlands, ranked 11th in the world, face a must-win match against France to keep their quarter-final hopes alive. When teams finish level on points, qualification is based on head-to-head records ahead of overall group results, so, assuming England beat Wales, the Dutch would need to beat France by at least three goals to go above them in a three-team "mini group". Should England fail to win, any victory for the Dutch would send them through. (Reporting by Lori EwingEditing by Christian Radnedge)

Rugby-Former England captain Farrell named for Lions tour match against AUNZ
FILE PHOTO: Rugby Union - Rugby World Cup 2023 - Third Place Play-Off - Argentina v England - Stade de France, Saint-Denis, France - October 27, 2023 England's Owen Farrell in action REUTERS/Sarah Meyssonnier/File Photo MELBOURNE (Reuters) -Former England captain Owen Farrell has been named in the replacements for the British & Irish Lions' tour match against an Australia-New Zealand Invitational XV in Adelaide on Saturday. Lions head coach Andy Farrell brought son Owen into the squad last week following Elliot Daly's broken arm, which ruled the versatile back out of the three-match test series against the Wallabies. Though boasting 118 England caps and three previous Lions tours, the 33-year-old playmaker's inclusion was polarising given he has not played a test since 2023 and is coming off an injury-plagued season in French club rugby. Andy Farrell, who defended Owen's inclusion last week, said on Thursday his son was no different to other teammates in needing to catch up fast to the Lions' playbook. "He's the same as everyone else who's had to get up to speed pretty quickly," Farrell told a press conference in Adelaide on Thursday. "Everyone had to at the start and a few have come in since. I think the art of this stage of the tour is mentally being as switched on as you possibly can. "There's not that much training that you can do. We're at a captain's run tomorrow and that's the preparation for this game." With only a couple of days' break following the laboured 36-24 win over the ACT Brumbies, Farrell has overhauled his squad while retaining a few players from Canberra. Winger Mack Hansen and loose forward Henry Pollock, who each played off the bench against the Brumbies, were included in the starting 15. England playmaker Marcus Smith has also been retained on the bench after replacing injured fullback Blair Kinghorn when he came off in the first half in Canberra with knee trouble. Farrell said he was hoping for good news on Kinghorn ahead of the first Wallabies test in Brisbane on July 19. "Whether it's going to be long term or shortish term, I don't think it's as bad as what could have been," he added. "It was something innocuous, really. Just a rugby accident that was unfortunate." Hugo Keenan will start in the number 15 jersey in Kinghorn's place in Adelaide, with lock Tadhg Beirne to captain the side as Maro Itoje is rested. Farrell's team will face 14 test players in the AUNZ line-up coached by Les Kiss at Adelaide Oval, their final run-out before the Wallabies. "As a unit, how they gel together, there's a little bit of unknown there," Farrell said of their opponents. "It looks like a formidable side, doesn't it, that's going to be hard to stop." Team: 15-Hugo Keenan, 14-Mack Hansen, 13-Huw Jones, 12-Sione Tuipulotu, 11-Duhan van der Merwe, 10-Fin Smith, 9-Ben White, 8-Ben Earl, 7-Jac Morgan, 6-Henry Pollock, 5-Tadhg Beirne (capt), 4-James Ryan, 3-Will Stuart, 2-Luke Cowan-Dickie, 1-Pierre Schoeman Replacements: 16-Ronan Kelleher, 17-Andrew Porter, 18-Finlay Bealham, 19-Scott Cummings, 20-Josh van der Flier, 21-Alex Mitchell, 22-Marcus Smith, 23-Owen Farrell (Reporting by Ian Ransom in Melbourne; Editing by Christian Radnedge)

Selangor FC focuses on local talent and heritage players for growth
SELANGOR Football Club (Selangor FC) remains dedicated to nurturing local football talent while also seeking heritage players abroad to strengthen its squad. State Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi stated that this hybrid approach aligns with modern football trends and enhances the club's competitiveness. Mohd Najwan explained that Selangor FC aims to balance the recruitment of heritage players with grassroots development to ensure long-term success. 'Selangor FC believes this hybrid approach can elevate the team's performance while maintaining the club's identity among Selangor's fans,' he said during the Selangor State Assembly. The discussion followed a question from Noor Najhan Mohamad Salleh (PN-Sementa) regarding whether the Selangor Football Association (FAS) would follow the Football Association of Malaysia's (FAM) strategy in recruiting heritage players. Mohd Najwan acknowledged that heritage players from Europe could improve the squad but stressed that local talent development remains a priority. He highlighted ongoing initiatives, including coach and referee training, amateur team development, and structured state-level leagues, to bridge the gap between local and foreign players. Selangor FC, FAS, and the state government have collaborated on programmes to strengthen football development. 'These efforts ensure that the best local players receive high-quality training and exposure,' he added. The club has also formed partnerships with European and Asian clubs to provide international training opportunities for local players. – Bernama
