Japan's Iwai wins Mexico crown for first LPGA title
The 22-year-old from Saitama fired a final-round six-under par 66 to finish 72 holes on 12-under 276 at Mayakoba resort.
She matched the biggest LPGA victory margin this year in defeating runner-up Jenny Bae by six strokes with South Korea's Kang Hae-ji third on 283.
"I'm so happy," Iwai said. "My mentality was so calm every time. It was just calm, good play."
Iwai became the third LPGA winner of the season from Japan, after Rio Takeda won the Blue Bell in China in March and Mao Saigo took the Chevron Championship last month, and the 20th Japanese player overall to win an LPGA crown.
Iwai, who won her eighth Japan Tour event in March, earned her LPGA Tour spot with a runner-up showing in last December's qualifying tournament and won as a rookie just five months later.
Dominant early in the final round, Iwai opened with a birdie and reeled off four more in a row starting at the third hole.
"Nervous in the morning, but I played the first hole and I was calmed down," Iwai said.
She added birdies at the par-three 10th and par-five 13th to reach 13-under and stretch her lead to eight strokes.
Bae, a 23-year-old American rookie who began the day with a one-stroke lead over Iwai, opened with back-to-back bogeys, went bogey-birdie at the par-five fifth and par-four sixth and closed the front nine with another bogey to tumble out of contention.
Iwai made her first bogey of the weekend at the 14th hole and Bae made birdies at 13 and the par-three 15th but added a bogey at 17 as Iwai's lead only slid to seven strokes before Bae closed with a birdie.
"I'm pretty happy with this week," Bae said. "It just tells me that I have a long ways to go but also I'm also getting there, too.
"I definitely realized that I've gotten more patience. I think that's a really key thing out here, just being able to focus within all the stress and pressure. I think that was really good.

Dryburgh and Porter grab lead at LPGA pairs event
Scotland's Dryburgh and Australian rookie Porter teed off on 10 at Midland Country Club and grabbed four birdies in their first nine holes. They answered their lone bogey of the day at the second with a birdie at the par-five third to finish the day one stroke clear atop a crowded leaderboard on which six duos shared second place on three-under 67. They were tied with China's Liu Yan and Zhang Yahui, England's Jodi Ewart Shadff and Taiwan's Heather Lin, South Koreans Im Jin-hee and Lee So-mi, Americans Megan Khang and Lexi Thompson, and American Jennifer Kupcho and Ireland's Leona Maguire. Defending champions Jeeno Thitikul of Thailand and Yin Ruoning of China shook off an early bogey and nabbed three birdies in a two-under 68 that left them in a seven-way tie for eighth. "We did not wake up yet, it's too early," Jeeno said.

'Battle of Seattle' as Inter down nine-man River to advance
Teenage striker Francesco Esposito and Alessandro Bastoni scored the goals to settle a physical contest which saw River finish with nine men. The final whistle was marred by an ugly melee which saw players from both sides clash as they sprinted off the pitch, with missiles being thrown by River's fans at Seattle's Lumen Field. "We got the job done, that's the most important thing," Inter manager Cristian Chivu said afterwards. "That game was very tough for us -- in the first half they had a lot of aggression, a lot of intensity. But in the second half we controlled the game better and in the end won." Earlier, the 19-year-old Esposito bagged his first goal for Serie A giants Inter with a lovely strike in the 72nd minute to put the Italians 1-0 up. The tall teenage striker collected a pass from Petar Sucic, elegantly lost his marker before drilling a shot into the bottom right-hand corner past River goalkeeper Franco Armani. Bastoni then bagged Inter's second deep into injury time to seal a win which sets up a last 16 meeting against Brazil's Fluminense next Monday. River's campaign ended in disarray, with defender Lucas Martinez Quarta sent off for denial of a goal-scoring opportunity in the 66th minute. Argentina international Gonzalo Montiel then followed his team-mate off the field in injury time after picking up a second yellow card Inter and River Plate had gone into the game with the Group E standings on a knife edge. But after Monterrey swept into an early 3-0 lead against Urawa in Pasadena, the stakes soon became clear in Seattle, where the winner would advance provided the result in California held. Osaka, Azarenka advance on grass at Bad Homburg
Japan's Osaka battled past Serbian qualifier Olga Danilovic 7-6 (8/6), 7-6 (7/4) as Belarusian Azarenka beat Germany's Laura Siegemund 6-2, 6-2. Azarenka, 35, next meets Poland's Iga Swiatek in the second round. Osaka fired 16 aces with Danilovic hitting 10 in a big-serving battle which lasted just over two hours. "It's my first grass-court win of the year, so I'm really excited about that," said Osaka, a wildcard to the main draw. "I think I have potential (on grass), but everyone else is also really good. "I can never take it for granted, the wins. Just super excited that I won today." The victory halts Osaka's three-match losing streak after Rome, the French Open and Berlin as she continues her comeback from maternity leave last year. The four-time Grand Slam winner advances to a second-round meeting with fifth seed Emma Navarro of the United States. Osaka saved four break points, while Danilovic fought off six, with the Japanese player coming through two tight tie-breaks.
