John Linehan can rattle off almost two dozen factors that Zoo New England's dynamic pricing contractor, Digonex, uses to recommend what to charge guests.
"It's complicated," said Linehan, president and CEO of the operator of the two zoos in eastern Massachusetts.
Before adopting dynamic pricing, the organization was changing prices seasonally and increasing entry rates little by little. "As we watched that pattern, we were afraid some families were going to get priced out," he said of the earlier approach. "I'm a father of four and I know what it is like."
Now, Zoo New England's system provides cheaper rates for tickets purchased far in advance. That, coupled with the zoo's participation in the Mass Cultural Council's discounted admissions program for low-income and working families, "puts some control back in the consumer's hands," Linehan said.
The zoo is one of many attractions embracing pricing systems that were earlier pioneered by airlines, ride-hailing apps and theme parks. While these practices allow operators to lower prices when demand is soft, they also enable the reverse, threatening to squeeze consumers who are increasingly trimming their summer travel budgets.
Before the pandemic, less than 1% of attractions surveyed by Arival, a tourism market research and events firm, used variable or dynamic pricing. Today, 17% use variable pricing, in which entry fees are adjusted based on predictable factors such as the day of the week or the season, Arival said. And 6% use dynamic pricing, in which historical and real-time data on weather, staffing, demand patterns and more influence rates.
The changes come as barely half of U.S. museums, zoos, science centers and similar institutions have fully recovered to their pre-Covid attendance levels, according to the American Alliance of Museums. That has led many to pursue novel ways of filling budget gaps and offsetting cost increases.
"There's a saying: 'No margin, no mission,'" Linehan said, "and we charge what we need to make ends meet while delivering on our mission."
Entry costs are climbing even at attractions that aren't using price-setting technology. The broad "admissions" category in the federal government's Consumer Price Index, which includes museum fees alongside sports and concert tickets, climbed 3.9% in May from the year before, well above the annual 2.4% inflation rate.
In 2024, the nonprofit Monterey Bay Aquarium raised adult ticket prices from $59.95 to $65 and recently upped its individual membership rate, which includes year-round admission, from $95 to $125. "Gate admission from ticket sales funds the core operation of the aquarium," a spokesperson said.
While the Denver Art Museum has no plans to test dynamic pricing, it raised admissions fees last fall, three years after a $175 million renovation and a survey of ticket prices elsewhere, a spokesperson said. Entry costs went from $18 to $22 for Colorado residents and from $22 to $27 for out-of-state visitors. Prices rise on weekends and during busy times, to $25 and $30 for in- and out-of-state visitors, respectively. Guests under age 19 always get in free thanks to a sponsored program.
Like many attractions, the art museum posts these prices on its website. But many attractions' publicly listed ticket prices are liable to fluctuate. The Seattle Aquarium — which raised its price ranges last summer by about $10 ahead of the opening of a new ocean pavilion — also uses Digonex's algorithmic recommendations.
During the week of June 8, for example, the aquarium's online visit planner, which displays the relative ticket availability for each day, offered out-of-state adult admissions as low as $37.95 for dates later in the month and as much as $46.95 for walk-in tickets that week. In addition to booking in advance, there are more than half a dozen other discounts available to certain guests, including seniors and tribal and military members, a spokesperson noted.
At many attractions, however, admission fees aren't even provided until a guest enters the specific day and time they want to visit — making it difficult to know that lower prices may be available at another time.
"Some attractions are doing a daily analysis of their bookings over the next several days or weeks and making adjustments" to prices continuously, said Arival CEO Douglas Quinby. Prices might rise quietly on a day when slots are filling up and dip when tickets don't seem to be moving, he said.
Digonex, which says it provides automated dynamic pricing services to more than 70 attractions worldwide, offers recommendations as frequently as daily. It's up to clients to decide how and whether to implement them, a spokesperson said. Each algorithm is tailored to organizations' goals and can account for everything from weather to capacity constraints and even Google Analytics search patterns.
Data-driven pricing can be "a financial win for both the public and the museum," said Elizabeth Merritt, vice president of strategic foresight at the American Alliance of Museums. It can reduce overcrowding, she said, while steering budget-minded guests toward dates that are both cheaper and less busy.
But steeper prices during peak periods and for short-notice visits could rankle guests — who may see anything less than a top-notch experience as a rip-off, said Stephen Pratt, a professor at the University of Central Florida's Rosen College of Hospitality Management who studies tourism.
"Because of the higher prices, you want an experience that's really great," he said, transforming a low-key day at the zoo into a big-ticket, high-stakes outing. "You've invested this money into family time, into creating memories, and you don't want any service mishaps."
That could raise the risk of blowback at many attractions, especially those grappling with Trump administration cuts this summer. Some historic sites and national parks have already warned that their operations are under pressure.
Consumers should expect more price complexity to come. Arival said 16% of attractions ranked implementing dynamic pricing as a top priority for 2025-26. Among large attractions serving at least half a million guests annually, 37% are prioritizing dynamic pricing, up from the 12% that use it currently.
For visitors, that could mean hunting harder for cheaper tickets. While many museums are free year-round, others provide lower rates for off-season visits and those booked in advance. It's also common to reduce or waive fees on certain days or hours, and many kids and seniors can often get discounted entry.
Here are a few other ways to keep admissions costs low:
"It may take a bit of research," said Quinby, "but it's still possible to find a good deal."

Inflation rises to 2.7% as companies shift tariff costs to consumers

Inflation rose last month as companies passed on to consumers the cost of tariffs, affirming a Federal Reserve stance of holding borrowing costs steady this year while assessing the impact from Trump administration changes to trade and other policies. The consumer price index increased at a 2.7% annual rate in June compared with 2.4% the prior month, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Tuesday, well above the Fed's 2% inflation target. Imported goods led the price gains during June, with apparel, household furnishings and appliances rising 0.4%, 1% and 1.9%, respectively. The report delivered 'a knock-out punch to tariff-inflation deniers,' Pantheon Macroeconomics Chief U.S. Economist Samuel Tombs said in a client note. 'Tariff costs are strikingly visible,' he said, noting that the price of goods excluding food, energy and autos rose 0.5%, the most in three years. The newest sign that inflation persists above the Fed's target prompted traders in interest rate futures to all but rule out a central bank reduction to the federal funds rate during a July 29-30 policy meeting, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. Traders raised odds of no change to 97% from 94% on Monday. The inflation report will probably do little to settle a debate among policymakers over whether import duties will fuel a one-time or sustained increase in price pressures. Price gains in services and other categories remained subdued in June, with airline fares and accommodation prices falling 0.1% and 2.9%, respectively, the BLS said. Rents increased just 0.23%, slightly above the 0.21% gain in May, which was the smallest increase since mid-2011. Also, the price of new vehicles declined 0.3% in June while the price of used cars and trucks fell 0.7%, the BLS said. Fed Chair Jerome Powell and other policymakers have favored resuming cuts to the main interest rate only after confirming that import duties will not trigger higher inflation beyond a few months. 'Continued overall solid economic conditions enable the Fed to take the time to carefully assess the wide range of incoming data,' Boston Fed President Susan Collins said Tuesday in a speech. 'Thus, in my view, an 'actively patient' approach to monetary policy remains appropriate.' At the same time, two Fed governors appointed by President Donald Trump have suggested this month that tariff-induced inflation will pass and expressed openness to considering a reduction to the benchmark rate as early as the next meeting. Trump for weeks has pressured Powell to reduce the federal funds rate, which he says would lead to a reversal in the federal government's mounting borrowing costs. "Consumer Prices LOW. Bring down the Fed Rate, NOW!!!" Trump said Tuesday in a social media post after release of the inflation data. He has repeatedly said Powell should slash the federal funds rate — which now ranges from 4.25% to 4.5% — by as much as 3 percentage points. The call for lower borrowing costs from Trump and White House officials prompted criticism Tuesday from JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon. 'I think the independence of the Fed is absolutely critical,' Dimon said after the bank announced quarterly earnings, according to the Wall Street Journal. 'Playing around with the Fed can have adverse consequences, the absolute opposite of what you might be hoping for.'

Here's how Trump's tariffs could be impacting prices for US consumers
US inflation heated back up in June, rising to its highest level in four months, as price increases — including those from tariffs — packed a bigger punch. Consumer prices rose 0.3% last month, pushing the annual inflation rate higher to 2.7%, the highest since February, according to the latest Consumer Price Index data released Tuesday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Tuesday's data came right in line with economists' forecasts for the headline CPI to rise from the 0.1% monthly and 2.4% annual increases reported in May. They expected higher gas prices would help lift the overall index (which was the case) and anticipated that a broader suite of goods would show the effect of businesses passing along higher import costs to consumers (which was also the case). 'Tariffs are starting to bite,' Heather Long, chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, told CNN in an interview. 'It wasn't as bad as expected, but you can see it in the data.' Excluding gas and food, which tend to be quite volatile, core CPI came in below expectations by rising 0.2% from May and 2.9% for the 12 months ended in June. However, that's an acceleration from 0.1% and 2.8%, respectively, the month before. Stocks were mixed Tuesday morning. The Dow was down 250 points, or 0.5%. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 was mostly flat and the tech-heavy Nasdaq rose 0.65%. 'While it's a relief to see Tuesday's CPI in line with expectations, it still showed that inflation was hotter in June than it was in May,' Skyler Weinand, chief investment officer at Regan Capital, said in an email. In recent months, President Donald Trump has enacted a sweeping trade policy of tacking steep tariffs on most goods that come into America. The sheer breadth of the tariffs as well as the fits-and-starts approach to their implementation has roiled markets and caused heightened uncertainty among businesses and consumers as to how much prices would move higher. However, inflation has remained relatively tame in recent months due to a variety of factors, including ongoing disinflation trends in housing and other key services, falling gas and travel prices (in part due to weakened demand from uncertainty), and businesses loading up on pre-tariff inventories. Economists cautioned that the tariff-related price hikes wouldn't come quickly nor in one fell swoop and would likely start to hit consumers more as the year went on. 'It's really been an inventory story,' Long said. 'Businesses have done an excellent job of managing inventory, particularly the large retailers heading into April' when the bulk of the tariff hikes were put into place. The larger retailers were carrying about three months' worth of extra inventory, Long said. 'And so, you do the math in your head and you're thinking, 'OK, this summer, right?'' she said. 'They're eventually going to run out of inventory or run down their inventory and have to bring in more items with the tariff costs.' On a relatively scattered basis, some items with high exposure to tariffs (the United States imports about 80% of toys from China, for example) have become more expensive, both private sector and federal reports such as CPI have shown. In May, for example, the CPI report showed very few widespread impacts from higher tariffs; however, prices were on the rise for a smattering of goods — such as toys, appliances, sporting goods and tools — typically imported or heavily reliant upon imported materials and components. Monthly economic data can be quite volatile, and economists frequently caution that it's important to take a longer view. However, some of the pricing trends seen in May also showed up in June and, in some cases, in a bigger way. Commodities excluding food and gas: This index strips out the oft-volatile food and energy categories and is being closely scrutinized in the wake of higher tariffs. Prices rose 0.2% in June after being flat in May. Apparel: Trump's tariffs were expected to raise the cost of most clothing, but the hardest hit items were expected to be some of the most basic (cheap T-shirts, socks, sneakers and undies). Overall apparel prices nudged up just 0.4% in June after declining in May and April. Appliances: Prices here leapt 1.9% in June after rising 0.7% in April and 0.6% in May. It was the highest monthly jump in appliance prices since August 2020, when homebound Americans upped their purchases of home goods during the Covid pandemic. Last month, the Trump administration extended the 50% tariffs on steel and aluminum to 'derivative products,' including consumer appliances such as dryers, washing machines, refrigerators, ovens and garbage disposals. Computers, peripherals and smart home assistants: Prices heated up in this category for the third-consecutive month, rising 1.4%, the highest monthly increase since January 2024. While Trump gave a reprieve for tech giants, exempting some smartphones, computers and electronics from tariffs, those products and parts are still exposed to the higher base tariff on Chinese imports. (Notably, Trump also has promised to levy higher tariffs on semiconductors, the chips that power scores of everyday items.) Sporting goods: The pace of price hikes accelerated here, with the index rising 1.4% in June, up from 0.3% in May. The June increase is the largest in 18 months. Tools, hardware and supplies: During much of 2023 and 2024, prices fell for this category. In June, prices rose 0.7%, marking the fifth-straight month of increases. Toys: For the second month in a row, prices rose by 1.4%, a back-to-back jump only seen during periods of abnormally high inflation (2022, 1980). And more price hikes could be coming down the pike, Hasbro CEO told CNN's Audie Cornish this week. Video equipment: Prices surged a record 4.5% in June after rising 1% in May in this category that typically has seen more deflation than inflation since 1998, when the BLS started tracking it. Windows and floor coverings and other linens: After rising 0.3% from May to April, prices in this category surged 4.2% higher in June, a record-high increase (BLS started tracking this category in early 1999). The US textile industry has shrunk considerably in recent decades, resulting in a high reliance on imported linens. The June CPI was expected to be a 'turning point' where steep tariffs would make an even bigger mark within the inflation data. However, the extent to which tariffs could drive inflation higher and how long that may last, remains an open question. 'We do have to bear in mind that goods are still only 25% of the core CPI, and so it takes a pretty meaningful increase in those goods prices to really lead to a spike in core inflation,' Sarah House, senior economist at Wells Fargo, told CNN earlier this week. The price increases seen on the goods side have been kept in check by disinflation (slower price increases) or deflation (outright price declines) in other components of the CPI — dynamics both long in swing prior to tariffs and others attributed to tariff-related fallout. 'I think you're still seeing, in many ways, the long tail of the pandemic in the services numbers — things like auto insurance continuing to subside on trend as vehicle price inflation has cooled off' as well as housing-related price hikes, House said. 'And in some ways, the recent inflation numbers have captured some of the downside effects on demand, for example, the drop in oil prices and the drop in travel services.' Economists such a Navy Federal Credit Union's Long cautioned that the tariff-related impacts remain early days. 'This feels like inning No. 1, the early stages of what will likely be more and more items showing that price increase,' she said. She noted how prices on coffee and oranges — categories already hit hard by climate-related impacts and also expected to feel added price pressure from tariffs — spiked in June. Trump's latest tariff threats on Canada and Mexico could reignite fears of higher food prices, she added. 'You don't buy a new washing machine every week, but you do buy fruits and vegetables,' she said. Trump on Tuesday cheered that consumer prices were low and White House officials downplayed the effect of tariffs on overall inflation. Trump urged for the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates 'now!' 'I think one thing that Wall Street, a lot of economists, (the) market in general, got wrong early on was that tariffs were going to cause a substantial price level rise, which just hasn't happened,' US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in an interview on Bloomberg prior to the CPI's release Tuesday morning. However, while the June CPI data 'screams' that Fed officials will likely take a 'wait and see' approach on further rate cuts when they meet later this month, there is some growing pressure for easing later this year, said Long, the Navy Federal Credit Union economist Long said. 'There is strain on the middle-class consumer right now and middle-class families: The housing market is frozen … the job market is frozen outside of a handful of sectors like healthcare,' she said. 'And it would be really helpful to the overall economy to see the Federal Reserve take a little bit of pressure off in September. I know it's a hard call looking at this data, but just from the middle-class perspective, some relief in September would be really helpful.' The CPI report is the first of two major pieces of inflation data due out this week. On Wednesday morning, the BLS will release the Producer Price Index, which is expected to show a continued pickup in wholesale-level inflation. $4,400 tax deduction update sparks warning for millions of Aussies: 'Kick in the teeth'
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has confirmed it will not be increasing the motor vehicle cents per kilometre deduction rate for the new 2025-26 financial year. Taxpayers can claim 88 cents per kilometre under the method, up to 5,000 kilometres per year, which works out to a maximum deduction of $4,400. An ATO spokesperson told Yahoo Finance the cents per kilometre rate would not be increasing this financial year. The rate is updated to reflect recent average operating costs for cars and the annual movement of the private motoring subgroup of the Consumer Price Index. 'The cents per km rate will not increase and the Income Tax Assessment (Cents per Kilometre Deduction Rate for Car Expenses) Determination 2024 will remain effective at 88 cents per kilometre for the 2025/26 year,' the spokesperson said. 'With fuel skyrocketing, it doesn't even allow people to cover their costs. It's going to force people to actually keep a logbook because the cents per kilometre method is just not going to be worth it for anyone,' she told Yahoo Finance. 'Even if you're travelling less than 5,000 kilometres, my advice is to keep a logbook because you may find that it's actually going to be better for you, just purely with the cost of fuel, let alone repairs and everything else.' The ATO increased the set rate to 78 cents per kilometre in the 2023 financial year, 85 cents per kilometre in 2024, and 88 cents per kilometre in 2025. Car-related travel claims made up the bulk of work-related claims in the 2023-24 financial year. Some 3.6 million people claimed about $10.3 billion in car expenses. There are two methods that you can use to claim motor vehicle expenses for work-related use of your car — the 'cents per kilometre method' and the 'logbook method'. The cents per kilometre method lets you claim up to 5,000 kilometres at a set rate of 88 cents per kilometre. It covers all car expenses, including registration, insurance, maintenance, repairs and fuel costs. While you don't need to keep a logbook, you need to keep track of where you've gone, why and how often. The cost of driving to your workplace cannot be claimed. The logbook method lets you claim more than 5,000, but you need to keep a logbook for 12 weeks straight of the income year. You need to track all kilometre use, both personal and work use. You also need to keep all your running costs for the year, including registration, insurance, services, repairs and fuel (which can be estimated over a four-week period). Raso said Aussies should start their logbooks now, as this method would likely give them a better tax deduction than the cents per kilometre method. 'Unless we're talking under 1,000 kilometres, you should really get a logbook going now,' she told Yahoo Finance. 'It goes for 12 weeks straight [so] right now is the best time to actually get that going.' Raso said you needed to have a starting and ending odometer reading. The logbook will be valid for five years as long as you don't change cars, jobs, the usage of the car or your home or workplace address. If you use an app for your logbook, such as Driversnote, or if you use a book you can also claim this cost on your tax return.
