Los Angeles Restaurants Step Up Amid the Ongoing Anti-ICE Protests
The Los Angeles Times reports that a street food vendor who sells aguas frescas and bacon-wrapped hot dogs assisted protesters over the weekend. As protesters found themselves battling tear gas, vendors Cinthia Soriao, Edgar Hernandez, and Sesarin Hernandez poured milk into their eyes. The Los Angeles Times report also states that the vendors fed protesters, as did other hot dog vendors.
Across town at Compton's Pupuseria La Ceiba, workers aided deputies who were hit with tear gas. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department emailed Newsweek the following statement: 'Without hesitation, the restaurant employees stepped in to assist the deputies, helping them decontaminate from the effects of the tear gas.'
Restaurants temporarily close during protests
Citing safety concerns during nearby protests, ICE roundups, and police activity, Mermaid bar closed its doors temporarily on Monday, June 9. Other Downtown restaurants followed suit, including Chinatown's Lasita and Redbird.
The Ranch House at Calamigos Guest Ranch reopens
After closing during the Palisades Fire, one of Malibu's restaurants reopened in early June. Calamigos Guest Ranch's on-site restaurant, the Ranch Club, is located 12 miles away from Pacific Palisades, which was devastated by January wildfires. Until late May, access to portions of Pacific Coast Highway was closed except to residents, construction and cleanup crews, and emergency responders, leaving Malibu somewhat isolated. The Ranch Club team took the time to revamp the restaurant's interior and adjust its menu. The family-owned restaurant is typically open to members only, but is now available to the public on specific nights. Reservations are available on Resy.

Singapore's Gan warns firms that US tariffs may stay after Trump

'We cannot bank on the possibility that the tariffs will go away after four years with a different US administration,' he said in a speech at a conference in the city-state Thursday. 'There is growing bipartisan consensus within the US on the use of tariffs to achieve fair and balanced trade with the world.' The levies may be here to stay and exports to the US will cost more for some time, Gan said. 'Businesses must be prepared for greater scrutiny over their production and supply chains,' said Gan, who is also Singapore's trade minister. The remarks follow Trump's announcement of a trade deal with Vietnam after weeks of diplomacy and as trading partners race to cut agreements with the US ahead of a July 9 deadline. The pact with Vietnam risks provoking retaliatory steps from China, according to Bloomberg Economics. 'The US wants fair and balanced trade with the rest of the world,' Gan said, adding that Washington has asked these countries to buy more goods from the US. 'That does not mean the US is not concerned about free trade, or more specifically, trade barriers against its exports – in fact, the US is also looking to address non-tariff barriers in these discussions.' Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in April expressed disappointment over the proposed 10% tariff on exports from Singapore, saying 'these are not actions one does to a friend.' ICE: Mexican cartel member taken into custody in Lakewood
LAKEWOOD — A Mexican national, who is also an active Cartel del Noreste gang member, was taken into custody Monday in the township, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Jose Heladio Bonilla-Sanchez, who ICE described as a 'criminal alien,' had been deported from the United States three previous times. The agency said the individual is in ICE custody 'pending removal and federal prosecution for illegal reentry.' Details about the arrest were not immediately available. The Mexico-based Cartel del Noreste, formerly known as Los Zetas, is one of the most violent drug trafficking organizations in Mexico and a U.S.-designated foreign terrorist organization, according to the U.S. Department of Treasury. The Cartel del Noreste exerts significant influence over the U.S.-Mexican border, especially near the crossing between Nuevo Laredo, Mexico and Lardeo, Texas, according to the Treasury Department. Organizations opposed to the Trump administration's Immigration and Customs Enforcement actions have said they plan to carry out planned demonstrations on Friday in Los Angeles, regardless. Last month, several protests turned violent, prompting President Donald Trump to dispatch National Guard troops and Marines to the city, where local police and Gov. Gavin Newsom said the soldiers were not needed to help them enforce the law. The city announced that it would postpone its annual Fourth of July block party "in light of recent events affecting a portion of downtown Los Angeles and the ongoing circumstances impacting the region," NBC News reported. More than 1,600 people have been arrested during ICE enforcement operations since the National Guard and Marines arrived in the city to bolster local efforts to remove undocumented immigrants from businesses and locations that knowingly hire or harbor them. The Los Angeles chapter of 50501, a group that organized a "No Kings" rally last month in opposition to Trump's enforcement tactics, has said it plans an all day demonstration outside City Hall on Friday, pushing back on the administration's immigration actions. "This isn't a celebration, " the group said in a statement. "It's a stand." Prompted by high profile immigration enforcement-related arrests, other, smaller communities that have large immigrant populations are also reconsidering Independence Day celebrations, including East Los Angeles, the Boyle Heights neighborhood, Lincoln Heights and El Sereno, all of which have historically been home to large immigrant populations. More than 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines remain stationed at federal office buildings in Los Angeles while other Guard soldiers have been redeployed to prepare for a busy wildfire season as hot, windy weather and low humidity have combined to create tinder dry vegetation and other dangerous conditions. Legal action to remove more federal troops from Los Angeles remains pending in court. Fear and uncertainty of surprise ICE enforcement actions have cast a shadow of fear and uncertainty over events that still remain planned in Southern California and other places with a high concentration of immigrant populations, including cities in the Midwest and on the East Coast.
