Top students of Classes X and XII exams to spend a day with DC/SSP in Punjab
Under the initiative, top-performing students of Classes X and XII examinations from each district would be provided an opportunity to 'spend one full day with their respective Deputy Commissioner (DC) or Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP)' to offer them meaningful exposure to real-world governance, discipline, and public service, a government statement said.
This initiative, conceptualised under the leadership of Administrative Secretary Anindita Mitra, aims to bridge the gap between merit and opportunity by empowering children from humble and rural backgrounds to envision themselves in positions of leadership. The programme will include participation in the morning routines of officers, which will provide exposure to administrative and policing functions, observation of departmental meetings, and interactive mentoring sessions, the statement said.
A total of six meritorious students — three each from Classes X and XII — will be selected from every district, with emphasis on gender balance and rural-urban diversity. The students will be divided into two groups — one to spend the day with the Deputy Commissioner and the other with the Senior Superintendent of Police.
During the day, students will observe real-time administrative and policing activities such as grievance redressal sessions, cyber cell operations, planning meetings, field visits to development projects or de-addiction centres, and other relevant engagements. A joint lunch with the officers will also be organised, offering the students an open platform to share their aspirations and receive career guidance.
After the programme, students will get a Certificate of Participation, a motivational book or diary, and a group photograph with the officer. A detailed feedback and mentoring session will be held to reflect on their experience.
The district administration will facilitate logistical arrangements, including transportation and meals. Female officers or mentors will accompany girl students where required, and prior parental consent will be obtained for all participants.
To document the initiative's impact, each district will create a short write-up with student reflections, which will be compiled into a 'District Merit Booklet'. Schools will also invite participating students to share their experiences with peers, thereby fostering a culture of aspiration and ambition across the student body.

Stress on universal access to quality education
District Education Officers (DEOs) met at a review meeting, conducted by the Department of School Education, at the MCRHRD Institute on Wednesday. Apart from DEOs, regional and deputy directors and key officials in the department discussed and analysed performance, systemic gaps, and strategies to improve the quality of education in schools. Adviser to Government K. Keshava Rao stressed on universal access to quality schooling for every child, and urged school managements to be 'leaders with a heart'. Secretary (Education) Yogita Rana explained the government's commitment for inclusive learning and lauded its efforts for the recent rise in enrollment and infrastructure measures. She called for a sustained enthusiasm in the entire department to bridge the existing gaps. Director of School Education E. Naveen Nicolas encouraged the DEOs and reminded them about their crucial role in converting State-level policies into impactful local outcomes. In-depth reviews on enrolment growth by Samagra Shiksha; Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR), Aadhaar validation issues, and Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) 2024‑25 enhancements, and urgent needs in classrooms, science labs, and sanitation facilities, were also held. The meeting deliberated on the progress in Telangana's Performance Grading Index, student learning outcomes as per PRS‑2024, and improvements in Foundational Literacy and Numeracy, Assessment at Scale (AxL), and the Learning Improvement Program (LIP). Officials also discussed students' preparation for SSC exam, PM SHRI model school upgrades, optimising teacher deployment, and plans for establishing new schools in underserved zones, environmental education through Vanamahotsavam, mid‑day meal compliance with PM POSHAN, and timely disbursement of textbooks and uniforms.

Dharwad district Kannada Sahitya Parishat waits for land lease renewal
Dharwad: While there is loud talk of promoting and protecting the interest of Kannada language, the organizations working for Kannada are not getting due support from the government. Dharwad District Kannada Sahitya Parishat (DDKSP)which has its office and Sahitya Bhavan located near RN Shetty Stadium in Dharwad is waiting for the lease of the land to be renewed. It has been 31 years since the lease has lapsed and till date, the efforts to get it lease renewed have continued. It was in 1989 that the state govt granted 1.1 acre of land on lease for five years near the district stadium to the DDKSP to carry out its activities. When Shivanand Gali was the president of the DDKSP, it was planned to construct Sahitya Bhavan and a committee under the chairmanship of HK Patil was constituted. A new building came up and was inaugurated on Oct 19, 1995 by which time, the lease period was over. The office bearers of DDKSP made no effort then to get the lease period renewed and Sahitya Bhavan had continued to function. Over the period, the premises saw buildings housing a meeting hall, president's office and a library. In 2021, Dharwad DC sent notices to all the properties which had been given by the govt on lease and the lease period of which had expired. The DC had asked the occupants to vacate the premises. Following this DDKSP office bearers met the DC and requested to renew the lease. Sources said the application still remains in govt files and has failed to elicit any response from the revenue department. DDKSP president Lingaraj Angadi said he has been running from pillar to post to get the lease renewed but to no avail. "We have paid the annual land rent till 2022-23 and are waiting for the govt to respond. Recommendations for renewal of lease by ministers and legislators and Kannada luminaries have not worked," he lamented. DDKSP plans to construct an open-air theatre and expand the facilities but the delay in getting the lease renewed has put a brake to plans. In 2019, Dharwad hosted 84th All India Kannada Literary Meet and there was a saving of Rs 26 lakh after the meet. DDKSP wants to utilise the amount for expansion of facilities at Sahitya Bhavan as the KSP Bylaw provides for the host district to utilize the savings for development of infrastructure. Angadi said the amount which is in the joint account of DC and DDKSP cannot be withdrawn as the audit of the income and expenditure of Sahitya Sammelana is not yet complete. "Dharwad is considered the cultural capital and a hub of Kannada literature, education, art and music and deserves all support from the government. The elected representatives from the region should prevail upon the govt to clear the hurdles and get the necessary clearance for lease renewal," said writer Prof Veeranna Rajur.
