Continued poor hitting has Braves fending off trade deadline questions after series loss to Angels
Continued offensive woes are making a case Atlanta could be sellers instead of buyers at the trade deadline.
Atlanta came within two outs of its second shutout loss in losing two of three games to the Los Angeles Angels. The Braves dodged what would have been their fourth shutout loss in their last seven games when Jurickson Profar hit a ninth-inning homer, but it was far too little to save the listless offense Thursday night in a 5-1 loss to the Angels.
The Braves were shut out by the Angels 4-0 on Tuesday night in the series opener.
The Braves (39-47) are fourth place in the NL East.
Manager Brian Snitker hoped the return of Profar from an 80-game drug suspension would spark the struggling offense, and Profar hit homers in back-to-back games. That wasn't enough to save Atlanta from its first home series loss to the Angels since 2005.
'So hopefully that will be an added thing for us,' Snitker said of Profar's return as the starting left fielder and No. 5 hitter. 'If we get some guys going around him.'
The Braves were limited to three hits, all singles, in seven innings by Angels right-hander José Soriano, who didn't allow a baserunner to reach second base. Matt Olson had one of the hits, a first-inning single to right field that extended his streak of reaching base safely to 33 games.
While Olson has boosted his batting average from .234 on May 27 to .267, others continue to struggle. Michael Harris is hitting .215 and Ozzie Albies is at .224 after each was held without a hit.
Those struggles add to speculation it may be time for the Braves to shake up the lineup at the trade deadline.
'Nobody wants to hear that,' Olson said. 'We're in here competing every day. We still have playoffs on our mind and I understand there's going to be some outside noise when you have a record like we do but we still feel like we've got a good unit in here. We're just not playing as well as we want to.'
The Braves also are burdened by a depleted rotation.
'That's on me,' Elder said.
'It's tough to get the offense on a roll when you're always coming from behind."
Elder's poor outing came one day after right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach landed on the 15-day injured list with a fractured right elbow on Wednesday. The rotation previously lost Chris Sale (broken rib), AJ Smith-Shawver (Tommy John surgery) and Reynaldo López (shoulder surgery) to injuries.

Dream end Lynx's 14-game home winning streak with 90-86 win
Brittney Griner scored a season-high 22 points and the hot-shooting Atlanta Dream handed the Minnesota Lynx their first loss in 15 home games this season 90-86 on Sunday night. The Lynx trailed 83-70 with three minutes to go but pulled within three on Napheesa Collier's basket with 11.3 seconds left. Jordin Canada's free throw at 7 seconds iced it. Alanna Smith added 12 points, Courtney Williams 11 and Natisha Hiedeman 10. The Lynx franchise-record home winning streak was the fourth-longest in WNBA history. Atlanta was 5-of-20 shooting in the third quarter when Minnesota cut a 14-point halftime deficit to as little as three. But in the other three quarters the Dream shot 29 of 45 (71%). The Lynx shot 56% but after Collier it was 48%. They were also outscored by nine at the foul line. The Lynx end a five-game homestand on Wednesday when the defending champion New York Liberty visit for the first meeting of the season between the two WNBA finalist from last season.

James Pearce, other Falcons went "a little too far" in practice scuffles Sunday
Falcons first-round pick James Pearce was in the middle of the fray during Sunday's training camp practice. Pearce scuffled with left guard Matthew Bergeron and right tackle Kaleb McGary on back-to-back plays during a drill pitting the first-team offense against the second-team defense. Pearce's fellow edge rusher Leonard Floyd got involved both times as well and defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich said after the session that the rookie's "anger got the best of him a little bit. "We're trying to develop a culture, a style of play for sure, and part of that is the violence with which we play and aggression, the urgency and all that," defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich said, via Marc Raimondi of "Today, at times, it went a little too far and we've got to learn how to manage that. You're going to get agitated and, especially when you're playing really good defense, the offense is going to get very agitated, so you've got to anticipate punches being thrown, things being said, people getting pushed. In those moments, you got to thrive and not retaliate and so it's a good lesson to be learned today." The Falcons are over a week away from their first preseason game, so Pearce and the rest of the club are going to have to try to find ways to make cooler heads prevail for a little while longer before they'll have a chance to let out their aggression on players in other jerseys.

Brittney Griner leads way as Dream hand Lynx their first home loss of the season, spoil Napheesa Collier's 32-point night
The Minnesota Lynx are perfect at home no more. Brittney Griner led the Atlanta Dream to a 90-86 win over the Lynx on Sunday to hand Minnesota its first home loss of the season. The Lynx had previously won 14 straight at home to start the 2025 campaign. The Dream had to fend off a stat-stuffing 32-point effort from Napheesa Collier and a furious late comeback effort from the Lynx to secure the win. But they did both to improve to 15-10 and keep pressure in the East on the New York Liberty (17-7), whose first-place lead over the Dream now stands at 2.5 games. The Lynx still maintain the WNBA's best record with the loss that dropped them to 22-5 and 14-1 at home. Atlanta seized early control of the game and raced out to a 46-32 lead. Griner repeatedly outmatched her opponents in the paint as Atlanta built the lead en route to 22 points, four rebounds and three assists. She scored 17 of her 22 points before halftime and finished the night shooting 8 of 13 (61.5%) from the field. The second half was a different story. Collier, who scored 11 points in the first half, took the game over after the break. Minnesota cut its 14-point halftime deficit to 60-54 by the end of the third quarter, and Collier kept the pressure on en route to 32 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, four steals and two blocks. She one-upped Griner's offensive efficiency with a 14-of-18 (77.8%) effort from the floor, including a jumper that cut Atlanta's lead to 86-89 with 11.1 seconds remaining. But Jordin Canada hit a free throw that pushed Atlanta's lead back to two possessions at 90-86 with 7 seconds remaining, and the Dream ran out of time and chances to complete the comeback. With the win, the Dream cap a six-game road trip with a 3-3 record. They'll return to Atlanta to face the Golden State Valkyries on Wednesday in their first home game since July 7. They'll finish the season with a back-loaded slate of home games that features 11 of their last 19 games in Atlanta, including seven of their last nine. The Lynx will have a chance to start a new home-winning streak on Wednesday in a showdown with the Liberty featuring the two best teams in the league. The Liberty might play that game without All-Star Breanna Stewart, who's dealing with a leg injury but will reportedly travel with the team.
