Alcaraz steps in to help fainting fan on scorching Centre Court

Carlos Alcaraz rushed to help a spectator who collapsed during his opening match at Wimbledon, pausing play on Centre Court as temperatures soared. The defending champion handed over a bottle of water and watched as medics and members of the crowd came to the woman's aid during a break in his match against Fabio Fognini. Spectator Cara McKelvey, 30, a council worker from Lancashire, was sitting directly behind the woman. She told PA news agency: 'She was in her 70s, just with one of her mates, and had been watching the whole match. 'It was so hot when the sun was beating down. She just fainted. 'The whole team were really good, they all came round. 'A spectator even ran over and said, 'I'm a doctor,' and started helping out. 'They treated her and moved her onto a chair. ' Moments later, Alcaraz jogged across the court and handed over a cold bottle of water from his bag as medics rushed to assist. Ms McCelvey added: 'Bless him, it was so sweet. 'Alcaraz passed over his bottle – I was like, oh my God, that's Carlos Alcaraz's bottle.' A video seen by PA news agency shows Wimbledon staff sheltering the woman with umbrellas while another fan waves a handheld fan over her face. Play was suspended for several minutes before the woman was helped away for further treatment. Umpire James Keothavong told the crowd: 'Ladies and gentlemen, unfortunately there has been an incident with a spectator. 'Health and safety is our priority. We will be pausing the match.' It comes as temperatures soared to 32.3C at Wimbledon on Monday – the hottest opening day on record.

Wimbledon fans make feelings clear after change to BBC coverage - 'It stinks'

Wimbledon fans tuning into the competition on Monday were not totally happy with the BBC's coverage of Carlos Alcaraz's tense first round win against Fabio Fogini Wimbledon fans have been left torn after spotting a major update to the competition's iconic scoreboard on the BBC. The latest edition of the competition got underway in SW19 on Monday. Reigning men's champion Carlos Alcaraz was among those in action as he took on Italian star Fabio Fogini. And fans tuning into the game were left surprised as they noticed a subtle tweak to the BBC's live coverage. ‌ Usually, the channel's coverage displays the scoreboard as the number of sets won per player, as well as the scores in the one currently in play. That is at odds with the coverage of the Australian Open, French Open and US Open that displays the scores in each set. But this time around, the BBC brought their coverage in line with other tournaments by displaying each set's scores. And fans struggled to make their minds up over whether the change was positive or not. One said: "Sacred grass, classy whites. Tennis' purest theatre. It's Wimbledon time. With sleek new scoreboard graphics,' another said: " Wimbledon score graphics are so fresh. Minimalist, elegant and instantly iconic." Some fans were completely against the change however. One fan wrote on Twitter: "The new Wimbledon graphic stinks,' with another adding: 'New Wimbledon score graphics? Not sure I like it…' The scoring was not the only alteration, with the player's names also being listed in seeding order. While the new graphics got fans talking, the main headline was certainly the tennis. Alcaraz only just squeezed through against Fogini, winning three sets to two, while a fan also fainted in the middle of the pair's showdown. The reigning men's singles champion offered his water bottle in an effort to aide her recovery. ‌ Alcaraz has now been sent a warning by Oliver Tarvot, who he will take on in the next round. He said: 'As a kid, it's what you dream of. I came here when I was a little kid. It's what you work for. Obviously, it's a pretty long-term goal. 'But for it to happen so suddenly has been really special. I've come here and not really set myself any expectations. I'm quietly confident that I can win against anyone. Alcaraz isn't an exception to that. 'Obviously, he's done an incredible amount in the tennis world. He's a difficult guy not to respect. But just go out there and try and treat it like another match.' Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Oliver Tarvet ‘quietly confident' he can beat anyone

The 21-year-old San Diego University student is ranked down at 733 but he took full advantage of a wild card into qualifying by winning three matches to earn his place at the All England Club. And he looked right at home on the lawns of SW19, producing an assured performance to claim a 6-4 6-4 6-4 win over fellow qualifier Leandro Riedi from Switzerland. The prize is a crack at defending champion Alcaraz, who only scraped past Fabio Fognini, and Tarvet said: 'As a kid, it's what you dream of. But just go out there and try and treat it like another match.' By reaching the second round, Tarvet's prize money has gone up to a guaranteed £99,000, but much of that may have to go unclaimed. He is planning to go back to university in the United States for his final year, and the rules of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, which runs college sports, requires players to stay amateur. Tarvet can claim 10,000 US dollars (approximately £7,300) as well as the expenses he has incurred during the tournament, and he hopes he can find a way to keep most of his winnings. 'Maybe I hire someone to help me out with the expenses, make sure the NCAA are happy,' he said. 'It's very important for me. I have a lot of goals at USD still. DREAM @Wimbledon DEBUT FOR OLIVER TARVET 🙌 Oliver's great run from qualifying continues and he'll now face the winner of Carlos Alcaraz vs Fabio Fognini#BackTheBrits 🇬🇧 | #Wimbledon — LTA (@the_LTA) June 30, 2025 'I've got to find £60,000, £70,000 of expenses – tennis is an expensive sport so hopefully I can make that happen.' There was no mistaking the joy Tarvet felt at his achievement, though. The St Albans player punched the air with a wide smile plastered on his face after serving out the victory, in which he did not face a break point and made so few unforced errors that Riedi described him as a British wall. 'I'm not here for the money,' added Tarvet. 'I'm here for the crowd and the experience and just to stamp my mark. I think I've done a pretty good job so far.'
