Four of 6 killed in Haridwar temple stampede from UP
'Among the four killed from the state, two have been identified as Aarush (12) of Bareilly and Vicky (18) from Rampur. Two others, whose age has not been confirmed yet, included Vakil of Barabanki and Shanti from Budaun', the UP government statement said.
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed his condolences to the victims' families. He announced that the UP government will give ₹2 lakh each aid to the families of each of the UP victims.
The Uttar Pradesh chief minister instructed the officers concerned to coordinate with the Uttarakhand government to bring back the bodies of the victims to their homes.
The stampede at the hilltop temple occurred around 9am when rumours of an electric current where the stairs to the temple begin sent people into panic, ultimately killing at least six people and leaving many injured, according to Uttarakhand Police.
In his message on X, Adityanath said, 'The loss of life in the unfortunate accident on the Sri Mansa Devi Temple road in Haridwar, Uttarakhand is extremely sad and heartbreaking...My condolences are with the bereaved families. I pray to Maa Mansa Devi to grant salvation to the departed souls, strength to the bereaved families to bear this immense sorrow and speedy recovery to the injured. Om Shanti!.'
Vicky Saini from Rampur's Bilaspur died during treatment, while his elder brother Sachin sustained injuries. Vicky was pursuing his second year of graduation at Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Government College in Kuakhera. On Saturday night, he and Sachin set out for Haridwar on a motorcycle to fetch Ganga water as part of the Kanwar Yatra.
After reaching Haridwar in the early hours of Sunday, the brothers took a dip in the Ganga and went to offer prasad at the Mansa Devi temple. While exiting the temple premises, there was a stampede-like situation following rumours that an overhead electric wire suddenly snapped and electrocuted several devotees. Vicky suffered severe injuries in the incident.
Teams from the police, NDRF (National Disaster Response Force), and local administration launched a rescue operation and transported the injured to a nearby hospital. Vicky succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
The victim's family left immediately for Haridwar. According to Savita Devi, the village head of Majhra, Vicky was the youngest of four siblings. His father, Tikaram Saini, works as an accountant at a cement shop. The family is also concerned about Vicky's mother, Shakuntala Devi, who is unwell and has not yet been informed about her son's death.
Rajendra Singh, uncle of the deceased, said Vicky had left home the previous night to collect 'Daak Kanwar'. 'He bathed in the Ganga and offered prasad at Mansa Devi temple. The accident occurred as he was returning. We appeal to the government to support the grieving family,' he added.
After the tragedy about 35 people were rushed to hospital, and six of them died. As it was a Sunday, a large crowd of devotees had gathered at the temple atop the Shivalik Hills at a height of over 500 feet. Videos from the spot showed a massive rush of people, including children and women, making their way to the temple. Outside the hospital, worried family members waited for news of their loved ones. Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said a magisterial probe has been ordered.

Brother-sister duo killed in accident on way to school, cousin injured
A brother-sister duo was killed and their cousin was critically injured when a speeding unidentified vehicle ran over them on the Badaun-Meerut highway on Monday. The incident took place near Silahari village under Sahaswan police station limits of Badaun district when they were going to school, said police, adding that the driver fled the scene immediately after the collision. DM ordered an inquiry and warned of strict action against defaulters. (FOR REPRESENTATION) According to police, the victims have been identified as Anshu (12) and Ankit (11), children of Prempal Singh from Kaknasi village in the Zarifnagar police station area. Their injured has been identified as their cousin Khushboo (12), daughter of Prempal's elder brother Mahipal. They were on their way to school in Nagla Choi village, around three kilometres from their home when the accident occurred. All three children studied in the same school, with Anshu and Khushboo in Class 2 and Ankit in Class 1. The children were taken to the community health centre (CHC), where doctors declared Anshu and Ankit dead on arrival. Khushboo, who suffered serious injuries, received emergency treatment and was later referred to a higher medical center for specialised treatment, informed KK Saroj, additional superintendent of police. He also instructed officials to identify and arrest the absconding driver at the earliest. Police conducted post-mortem examinations and handed over the bodies to the family and a case has been registered against the unidentified driver based on a complaint filed by Prempal, police added. During investigation, Prempal informed that he was uncertain whether the school was open after the weekend, so he called a teacher, Pramod, who confirmed that classes were being held. Based on this information, the children left home around 7:30 am on a bicycle. The district magistrate had ordered the schools in Budaun to remain closed from Saturday to Monday due to traffic diversions related to the Kanwar Yatra but some schools defied the order and remained open. DM Avneesh Rai said that the matter has come to his notice and he has ordered an inquiry, stating, 'Strict action will be taken against schools violating the official orders.' District Basic Education Officer (BSA) Virendra Singh said an investigation has been initiated and a clarification will be sought from the school management, adding that the recognition status of the school will also be examined. Varanasi: Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to his parliamentary constituency on Aug 2, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday took stock of preparations at the PM's proposed public meeting site in the Banoli area of Kalikadham locality in Sevapuri assembly constituency of Varanasi. Budaun: Two siblings on the way to school here on Monday died and a third child received critical injuries when their cycles was hit by an unknown vehicle, police said on Monday. The incident occurred around 7.30 am near Silhari village when the three children were going to school on their bicycles, they said. The district magistrate had ordered the schools in Budaun to remain closed from Saturday to Monday due to traffic diversions related to the Kanwar Yatra but some schools defied the order and remained open. DM Avneesh Rai told PTI that the matter has come to his notice and he has ordered an inquiry. "Strict action will be taken against schools violating the official orders," he said. District Basic Education Officer (BSA) Virendra Singh said an investigation has been initiated and a clarification will be sought from the school management. "The recognition status of the school will also be examined," Mr Singh added. Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) KK Saroj said Ankit (11) and Anshu (12), residents of Firozabad Narauta village that comes under the Zarifnagar police station limits, died in the accident. Khushboo (12), also from the same village, was seriously injured and referred to the district hospital in Budaun after initial treatment at the Sahaswan community health centre (CHC), police said. "The three children were on their way to Nahar Singh Inter College in Nagla Choi village when they were struck by an unknown vehicle near Silhari. The two siblings died on the spot and the third student was critically injured," ASP Saroj said, adding that legal proceedings, including post-mortem, are underway.
