More than 72 million Americans will be traveling to their destinations for the 4th of July. AAA says Denver is ranked number seven for travel, so expect traffic if you leave on Wednesday. I-70 will be one of the busiest travel highways in the state.
If possible, AAA recommends leaving on Thursday because they say there won't be as much traffic on the highways. If you do have to leave on Wednesday, it is recommended to leave during the early morning hours or the late evening hours. Drivers will see traffic, but will not be stuck in it as long.

Hyoung Chang/TheAAA says to check your vehicle before any big road trip. The top three calls they receive include flat tires, dead batteries, and people locking their keys in their cars. These are all situations that can be prevented, especially on busy highways like I-70 and I-25, where you don't want to be stranded.
"The summer is where people head westward or they head into the great wide open," said Skyler McKinley, Regional Director of Public Affairs for AAA. "Denver is the perfect launching point for that. People might fly into Denver and even use Rent-A-Car to join Coloradoans like us on I-70 and I-25. They will be part of the traffic that we are a part of and head off to their destinations where they stimulate the high-country economy."
Always remember to fill up your vehicle before heading on a big road trip. You don't want to run out of gas on the way there.

As you hit the road, don't forget the express lane basics. Cross the line, pay the fine. Pay attention to roadway signage warning of upcoming entrances and exits.

Hochul announces more drones, staff to patrol for sharks on Long Island beaches

Beachgoers on Long Island will see increased patrols, enhanced aerial surveillance and more safety measures starting this weekend as part of the state's effort to protect swimmers and monitor for sharks and other potentially dangerous marine life, Gov. Hochul announced Wednesday. Ahead of the Fourth of July weekend and in preparation for beach season, Hochul said the state would increase the number of drones patrolling the Long Island State Park beaches and add additional drone operators to patrol the waters for unsafe conditions. State officials say lifeguards with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) continuously monitor the water from the shore, surfboats and personal watercraft for signs of dangerous marine life, including sharks. NYS Park Police and other staff also patrol the beachfront, using drones to scan for sharks or large schools of fish that might attract them. As part of the new measures announced Wednesday, six drones have been added to the existing fleet of 22, bringing the total to 28 drones in operation. The number of certified drone operators has also increased from 40 to 48, officials said. One 'large enterprise drone' will also be in use by Park Police, equipped with thermal imaging, laser range-finding and high-quality cameras to enable nighttime surveillance and patrols in adverse weather conditions. This drone can also drop personal flotation devices in emergencies, according to the governor's office. 'Our Long Island State Park beaches are cherished by New Yorkers and visitors alike — perfect places to get offline, get outside and enjoy the outdoors,' Hochul said Wednesday in a news release. 'We are continuing to strengthen our shark surveillance capabilities and safety tactics at these beaches to help protect these treasured summertime traditions.' When sharks are spotted, swimming will be suspended until at least one hour after the last confirmed sighting, with swimmers cleared from the water. State Parks staff, in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Conservation, will verify sightings, as lifeguards and NYS Park police will 'stay on high alert and patrol the waters for dangerous marine life,' officials said. Additionally, the Long Island Coastal Awareness Group — more than 200 individuals from municipalities, agencies and private beach operators from Queens through Long Island — will be notified so they can take appropriate action in their respective jurisdictions. Last week, a 20‑year‑old woman was reportedly bitten by 'unknown marine life' — likely by a juvenile sand tiger shark — while waist-deep in the surf at the Central Mall beachfront of Jones Beach State Park, the OPRHP said Friday. She sustained non-life-threatening lacerations to her left foot and leg and was treated at Nassau County University Medical Center Hospital. _____

Drivers get a head start on their holiday travel in Massachusetts

AAA anticipates travel during the week of July 4th will be busier than ever before and many were getting a head start on their holiday travel Wednesday in Massachusetts. "Across the country, we expect to set a record with 72.2 million people traveling over the July 4th holiday period," said Mark Shieldrop, a spokesperson for AAA Northeast. The organization says Wednesday was the busiest day of the week and by the afternoon, Massachusetts travelers were already experiencing congestion on the roads. "I just came from the North Shore, and it's getting heavy. And going southbound, it was heavy coming from the North Shore down to here," said traveler Bob Lamacchia at the rest stop on I-95 in Newton on Wednesday. Two days before the actual holiday, traveler Mark Pardes adds, "I was surprised—people have left today. It is busy out there." In Massachusetts, AAA anticipates more than 2 million trips throughout the week. "That's people leaving, people coming, people passing through," Shieldrop said. Nicky Yochem and her son Conrad are among the 18.5 million travelers that TSA expects to fly this week. "We're here visiting my brother from Minnesota," Yochem said. "I think we're going to do some barbecuing and we're going to do some swimming in a friend's pool." To avoid travel stress, planning ahead is key. "If you give yourself more time, that gives you less pressure so you can just kind of mosey along and enjoy the ride," Shieldrop said.

Starboard Value builds over 9% stake in Tripadvisor, WSJ reports

(Reuters) -Activist investor Starboard Value has built an over 9% stake in online travel firm Tripadvisor, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday. Shares of Tripadvisor rose over 10% in extended trade after the news. According to the report, the Jeff Smith-led investment firm has a stake valued at around $160 million based on Wednesday's closing prices. The investment is expected to be revealed in a regulatory filing on Thursday, the report added, citing people familiar with the matter. Tripadvisor and Starboard did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. The stake would make Starboard one of Tripadvisor's largest shareholders, according to WSJ.
