911 calls reveal shooting on Wellington Court in Hamilton happened following argument, huge fight
Jul. 8—What appeared to be a neighborhood block party, complete with a fireworks show, turned into a large fight and ended with one man shot in the torso, according to the nearly dozen 911 calls examined by the Journal-News. One of the callers described it as "a massive fight" with "10 to 15 people throwing hands with each other." Another caller believed it was as many as 20 to 25 in the donnybrook, though police reported it as 20. Neighbors and those who were attending the block party at 37 Wellington Court ― though some 911 callers said it was at 36 Wellington — called the Butler County Sheriff's Office dispatch for help just after 11 p.m. on Friday when a gun was fired. Callers told dispatchers there were multiple gunshots, and after they were fired, a handful of people scattered, including the believed gunman in a black sedan. The victim is a 20-year-old Hamilton man and was transported by medical helicopter to UC Medical Center for treatment. The victim was still hospitalized and in serious condition as of Tuesday, according to police. A second person was injured, also a 20-year-old Hamilton man, with minor injuries. The gunshots are believed to be a result of an argument, according to a Hamilton police report. No one has been taken into custody from this incident, police told the Journal-News on Tuesday. There were nearly a dozen people calling after the shooting, some of whom were at the party and close to the victim. "We all already have somebody shot, please hurry," said the caller. "He's awake, he's breathing, he's talking." This caller also said the alleged shooter was believed to be in a black sedan. Another caller said once the gunshots rang out, "three or four people got in cars and fled off," and though the fight waned, the screaming continued. One of the first callers said she could hear from her residence "talk of guns," but couldn't decipher any conversation. "They're screaming so hard, I can't tell what they're saying," she told the dispatcher. Dispatchers told the callers who were at their homes and not at the party to stay inside. Detectives are continuing to investigate the incident and what led up to the shooting, and anyone with information can call the Hamilton Police Department's detective section at 513-868-5811, ext. 2002.

Mary Lou Retton's shocking mugshot, bodycam footage of DUI arrest released
The bodycam footage from Mary Lou Retton's DUI arrest earlier this year has been released. The former Olympian, 57, appears in the shocking video, released Tuesday, wearing a bright yellow shirt and and brown shorts, as she's pulled over by police. The officer then gives her some instructions for a sobriety test as she murmurs, 'Oh my God.' The former gymnast appears to become a bit combative, huffing, 'Oh, come on,' when the officer demands that she continue trying to balance herself for a few more seconds. Although Retton was pulled over in West Virginia, she told the cops she only had a Texas-issued license — but that it was not on her at the time — and that she only had her passport. The former athlete informed the officer that she was refusing the breathalyzer test, despite that meaning she would obtain an additional charge for declining to do so. The entire ordeal, which took place in an AutoZone parking lot on May 17, resulted in Retton getting handcuffed for driving under the influence. She became emotional and told a loved one, 'Oh my God, Gia. They think I'm drunk,' as the latter tried to advocate on her behalf to police. The officers still escorted Retton down to the station, however, and upon her arrival there, she told a policeman, 'I mean, really. …I know, you know [who I am].' While at the station, the former gold medalist got her mugshot taken, which was also released Tuesday. She appeared to be crying and very upset while posing for the photograph. In the bodycam footage, the mom of four continued to break down. Reps for Retton did not immediately respond to Page Six's requests for comment. Retton's arrest first became public in late May. At the time, online records showed that she had been booked in Marion County for 'driving under influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or drugs; penalties.' Per a police report, she drove her Porsche 'all over the roadway' with a container of wine beside her. Retton received a $100 fine and told 'Entertainment Tonight' after a court appearance in June, 'I take full responsibility for my actions. What happened was completely unacceptable. I make no excuses. 'To my family, friends and my fans: I have let you down, and for that I am deeply sorry. I am determined to learn and grow from this experience, and I am committed to making positive changes in my life. I truly appreciate your concern, encouragement and continued support.'

PSL general manager Andile Ncobo remains behind bars as state opposes bail in domestic violence case
PSL manager Andile "Ace" Ncobo appeared in court for a bail application after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, Anney Xala, following an argument at their flat on 28 June. The state opposed bail, citing that Ncobo has a propensity to commit offences, as he was already on bail for separate R15 million fraud and money laundering charges involving PetroSA donations. Judgment was reserved until Tuesday, 8 July, with the court considering his high salary of over R200,000 per month and willingness to reside at an alternative address. PSL general manager and businessman Andile 'Ace' Ncobo appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrates' Court in Ekurhuleni for a formal bail application following his arrest for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, Anney Xala. Xala, who is 27 years old, accused Ncobo of slapping her after a verbal argument at their flat in Kempton Park on 28 June. During the bail application on Monday, it was revealed that the couple had been together for six years and that Ncobo earns a monthly salary of over R200 000 from the PSL. His lawyer, Leon Khoza, argued that Ncobo would not evade trial should bail be granted, even under strict conditions, noting that he was already complying with bail conditions for fraud and money laundering charges in Cape Town. While reading Ncobo's affidavit in court, Khoza declared that his client was not on parole for any offences. 'I humbly submit that the interests of justice do permit my release on bail, based on the following factors: that there is no likelihood that if I am released on bail, I will endanger the lives of the public or witnesses or that I will evade trial or intimidate witnesses,' his affidavit read. Ncobo also declared that he was willing to reside at an alternative address pending the finalisation of the matter. According to a police officer close to the case, who asked to remain anonymous because he was not authorised to speak to the media, 57-year-old Ncobo was being held at the Modderbee Correctional Centre in Benoni. However, state prosecutor Takalani Mukhumo was adamant that the state opposed bail, citing that Ncobo had a propensity to commit offences. There are no guarantees that if the accused is released on bail, he will not commit any other offence as he has done, considering that he committed this alleged offence whilst being on bail for the fraud and money laundering case in Cape Town. Takalani Mukhumo Mukhumo also told the court that despite Xala's request for withdrawal of the case, the state was proceeding with the charges against Ncobo. 'Your Worship, the state is opposed to the withdrawal of the charges as requested by the complainant. This would be tantamount to an abuse of the criminal procedure, and the case is of a serious nature,' he said. Judgment was reserved as the case was postponed until the following day, Tuesday, 8 July. Meanwhile, in May, Ncobo and his wife, Salome, appeared in the Bellville Magistrates' Court in Cape Town on fraud and money laundering charges relating to a R15 million donation for school construction projects in the Eastern Cape. The state alleges that Ncobo and his wife embarked upon a scheme to obtain money from Petroleum Oil and Gas Corporation of SA SOC Limited (PetroSA) fraudulently in favour of themselves, their family members and/or entities in which they had a vested interest. PetroSA operated a corporate social investment (CSI) programme, which was responsible for administering and granting monetary donations to needy and disadvantaged schools, institutions or disaster management programmes. The programme focused on education, health, community enhancement and the environment. PetroSA agreed to donate R13 million to rebuild the school. A King's Gangatha Building Trust, unregistered, was established to facilitate the funding and rebuilding of the school. Ncobo oversaw and managed the construction, which started in November 2008 and was completed in September 2009. The school never authorised him to act as its representative or to be appointed as project manager to oversee and manage the construction. He was granted R50 000 bail, while his wife was granted R30 000 bail. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) has been investigating the matter for over a decade.
