Odisha Government Orders Investigation After Fatal Puri Rath Yatra Stampede

Additionally, significant personnel changes have been implemented, including the replacement of Puri Superintendent of Police Pinak Mishra and Puri Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain with Chanchal Rana. Two officials, DCP Vishnu Pati and Commandant Ajay Padhi, have been suspended for dereliction of duty.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced substantial financial support for affected families, providing ₹25 lakh compensation to each family that lost a member in the stampede. The Chief Minister expressed profound grief over the tragedy and pledged that stringent action would be taken against responsible parties while implementing measures to prevent future incidents.
Emphasizing Odisha's cultural heritage, the Chief Minister described the Rath Yatra as a source of regional pride and committed to maintaining both the safety and sanctity of this significant religious festival. Arabinda K Padhee, Chief Administrator of the Shree Jagannatha Temple Office, reported that the festival's traditional elements, including the chariots' journey to Shree Gundicha Temple, were completed according to established customs. He acknowledged devotees' cooperation and requested continued support for upcoming ceremonies, particularly the important Sandhya Darshan ritual scheduled for July 4.
State Director General of Police YB Khurania noted that the Pahandi Bije ceremony concluded peacefully, with millions of devotees across the nation witnessing the sacred proceedings without additional disturbances.
The annual Rath Yatra attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from throughout India, making crowd management a critical challenge for authorities. Kruti currently resides alone in the same house where her father was killed. Her mother, Pallavi, is in judicial custody, having been arrested for the murder of the retired senior officer. Her brother, Karthikesh, no longer lives in the house. In the immediate aftermath of Om Prakash's death, police had to break open Kruti's room to take her into custody for questioning. While initial suspicions during the investigation included the possibility of Kruti's involvement, it was her mother who was ultimately named the prime accused. The retired officer was reportedly in the middle of a meal when he was fatally attacked, a detail that emerged during the course of the police investigation. Congress Placates Cop In Siddaramaiah 'Slapgate' Row, He's Back On Duty
Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah seems to have seen off two crises in 48 hours. Less than 24 hours after surviving a power grab by his deputy, DK Shivakumar, the Congress veteran was bailed out of a potential showdown with the state police force after a senior cop - whom he almost slapped during a party event in Belagavi in April - stood down his protest. Additional Superintendent of Police Naryana Baramani reported for duty Wednesday after talks with the Chief Minister, Home Minister G Parameshwara, and high-ranking police officers. "I expressed my feelings to my superiors... they spoke to me. So did the Chief Minister and Home Minister (G Parameshwara) ... after which I have decided to report to duty," he said. After his meeting, Mr Parameshwara - to whose office the police report - promised a "good posting" for ASP Baramni and called his resignation letter a "spur of the moment reaction". "The Chief Minister had no intention of insulting (the officer)," he said. Sources said the Karnataka government had rushed to placate ASP Baramani after he sought VRS, or voluntary retirement, in a three-page letter that has been widely shared online, and in which he said "neither the Chief Minister nor any officer from his government or my department tried to console me". Puri stampede: Odisha Government seeks information from public
The Odisha Government on Thursday (July 3, 2025) requested the public to share any information related to the Puri stampede that left three people dead and 50 others injured. The stampede took place near the Shree Gundicha Temple during a Rath Yatra event on June 29, 2025. The State Government through a public notice urged the people to share information, video footage or any other materials related to the stampede which took place early on Sunday (June 29, 2025) for a proper and transparent inquiry into the incident. Day after stampede, thousands make beeline to have glimpse of sibling deities in Puri The public notice issued by the Planning and Convergence Department, also mentioned that any individual or organisation can share their information regarding how such an incident took place. "The members of the public are urged to share information, video footage or any other material through the e-mail by July 20," an official said. This apart, the notice said the interested persons can meet and share information with Development Commissioner and Additional Chief Secretary Anu Garg at the State Guest House in Bhubaneswar after 3 p.m. on July 9 and at the Special Circuit House in Puri on July 10 after 3 p.m. The State Government has also provided two landline telephone numbers (0674-2536882/2391970) of Bhubaneswar to facilitate the people to pass on their information to the team engaged in the inquiry of the stampede tragedy. The State Government hours after the tragedy had ordered an administrative inquiry into the stampede with Development Commissioner and Additional Chief Secretary Anu Garg as its chief. Mr. Garg has already undertaken a preliminary investigation by visiting the place of the accident and also holding talks with different stakeholders including police. She is mandated to submit a report to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi within 30 days. Meanwhile, the government on Wednesday formed a four-member OAS officers team to assist Mr. Garg to carry forward the inquiry and meet the one-month deadline. After preliminary inquiry, Mr. Garg said she would find out what led to the stampede situation and identify the people responsible for the incident. "I would also see what more measures could be taken to avoid such incidents in future," the Development Commissioner said. She would also examine all CCTV footage, go through the deployment orders and whether the SOPs were being followed. After the stampede, the State Government immediately transferred the Puri District Collector and the SP. Two senior police officers have also been suspended on charges of dereliction of duty. Senior IAS officer Aravind Agarwal has been assigned the charge to supervise the Rath Yatra affairs in Puri. Senior IPS officer Soumendra Priyadarshi has also been given the overall charge of streamlining police arrangements for the Rath Yatra.
