"I was talking to Shubman...": PBKS' Harpreet Brar speaks on how he joined India's net session at Birmingham

India Gazettea day ago

Birmingham [UK], June 29 (ANI): As Team India gears up for the second Test against England, the left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh was joined by Punjab Kings (PBKS) teammate, and spinner Harpreet Brar and Chandigarh pacer Jagjit Singh Sandhu.
The second Test will kickstart from July 2 onwards, and left-arm pacer Arshdeep, who is India's leading T20I wicket-taker, would be eyeing a potential Test debut after a poor show from Indian pacers, except for Jasprit Bumrah, at Leeds.
Speaking in a video by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Brar said that his wife lives near Birmingham, and skipper Shubman Gill texted him, prompting him to come to practice.
'My wife is from Swindon. It is very close to Birmingham, it is a 1-1.5 hour drive. I was talking to Shubman; he texted me yesterday. So I thought, let us go and practice there,' he said.
He also expressed happiness with Arshdeep's journey over the years, saying that he feels 'proud' of his performances.
Brar impressed in PBKS' runners-up finish in the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year, taking 10 wickets in eight games at an average of 19.00.
Arshdeep clearly enjoyed the arrival of Brar and Sandhu, saying, 'When you come to a foreign country and see familiar faces, you can enjoy together.'
Sandhu, the 28-year-old pacer, has played 24 first-class games, taking 82 wickets at an average of 24.13 and scoring 317 runs at an average of 16.68 with a fifty to his name.
Recalling his journey with the Indian team players, Sandhu said, 'Rishabh Pant and I played Under-19 Zonal one-day cricket together. When it was my last U19 season, Gill had his first. I played with Akash Deep in the Duleep Trophy, played with Washington Sundar in the U19 zone as an opponent. Arshdeep is also my junior, used to tell him how to bowl, take a run-up and all. Today he was asking me things as well.'
India's Test squad for England series: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav. Pragg recently won his third title of the year at UzChess Cup Masters. read more Indian Grandmaster Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa has impressed everyone with his strong performances in 2025. After winning three titles this year, including the recent UzChess Cup Masters, he is being lauded for his aggressive playing style. Praggnanandhaa's longtime coach RB Ramesh has revealed the reason behind this change. Speaking to The Indian Express, Ramesh said that Pragg was playing too safe in 2024 and that they had discussed bringing more adventure into his games. Ramesh also mentioned that Pragg has been working on new openings and trying different strategies, which has worked well for him so far. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Pragg is quite good in attack, but he was playing too solid in 2024. At least that was my impression. We discussed this and talked about being more adventurous, which you can see now. His chess was always quite good. Now he's also been adding new openings and trying a lot more variety of openings in games,' Ramesh told IE. Ramesh further revealed that there's another key person in Pragg's team, who is helping him with training. Ramesh said Grandmaster Vaibhav Suri has been working closely with Pragg for the past several months, but they had kept it private until recently when he started travelling with him for tournaments. 'Vaibhav has been helping us longer than this year. But we did not want to go public earlier (and reveal his association with Pragg). He has been with us for some time, but only recently he has started accompanying Pragg for tournaments and that has been very helpful,' he added. What's next for Praggnanandhaa? Praggnanandhaa recently joined Team Liquid ahead of the Esports World Cup 2025, strengthening the team's lineup that includes five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen and American GM Fabiano Caruana. However, to take part in the tournament, Pragg will need to earn his spot by competing in the Last Chance Qualifiers, where only four players will make it to the final EWC lineup. 12 players, including Carlsen, have already confirmed their spots for the event. Arjun Erigaisi of Generation Gaming is the only Indian to have qualified so far.

MS Dhoni moves to trademark ‘Captain Cool'

Mumbai: MS Dhoni got a step closer to turning the 'Captain Cool' moniker he enjoyed when he was India skipper into a trademark. His application under the trademark law for exclusive rights over the epithet was 'accepted and advertised'. Ahmedabad: Chennai Super Kings' captain MS Dhoni during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 cricket match between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings, at the Narendra Modi Stadium, in Ahmedabad, Sunday, May 25, 2025. (PTI Photo/Shahbaz Khan)(PTI05_25_2025_000368A) (PTI) Accordingly, the 'Captain Cool' tag proposed to be used by Dhoni for 'sports training, providing sports training facilities, sports coaching services' was added to the Trademark Journal of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks in Kolkata. The application initially faced an objection as a company, Prabha Skill Sports Pvt Ltd. had applied for the tag. Dhoni's legal team successfully argued that his reputation and identity were tied to the moniker much before and it was well-established through media recognition, public usage and consumer perception. 'This matter serves as a relevant case study in how personal branding and acquired distinctiveness can be effectively leveraged in trademark prosecution, even when facing earlier conflicting marks,' Mansi Aggarwal, the lawyer representing Dhoni, posted on LinkedIn. It is understood that it will become a registered trademark if, after advertisement, it is unchallenged over a four-month window. Optimisation of personality rights by famous sportspersons is less common in India. US basketball great, LeBron James has 'King James' trademarked across varied segments, from sports equipment to clothing. The other great American basketballer, Michael Jordan, has the 'Jumpman' logo, which depicts him mid-air to slam dunk, protected, not only on his line of Nike shoes but also on a wide range of merchandise. Jamaican sprinter and multiple Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt has extensively trademarked his iconic victory pose, at home and across jurisdictions. Dhoni first earned the sobriquet of Captain Cool when he led an Indian team of young hopefuls to the T20 World Cup in 2007. Handing the final over to Joginder Sharma with 13 runs to defend and succeeding, his composure as captain in the tournament showed his ability to stay calm in pressure cooker situations. Dhoni led India to the 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy, besides captaining Chennai Super Kings to five IPL titles. With the bat, pressure never got to Dhoni in a run chase as he masterminded last over wins, and often last ball wins, in run chases. With a poker face as the camera panned on him in crunch situations, the 'Captain Cool' title grew on Dhoni. Now, he wants to cash in.
