Dana Carvey talks 'delicate' process of playing mentally 'compromised' Biden on 'SNL'

Dana Carvey is looking back on the "delicate" process of spoofing former President Joe Biden.
The comedian, 70, chatted with Julie Bowen in an episode his "Fly on the Wall" podcast released June 26 about impersonating Biden during the 50th season of "Saturday Night Live." The "Modern Family" star asked Carvey if he has any regrets about the impression "now that you know that Biden is severely diminished," referring to reports about the 46th president's alleged cognitive decline.
"I knew that he was compromised mentally," Carvey said. "I mean, it was obvious. But it was a delicate thing in the comedy world. A lot of people did not want to do anything that would ding him in an awkward way."
Bowen objected to that notion, shooting back, "But it's comedy!" The "Wayne's World" star agreed and defended the impression by explaining his approach. "If I can make Biden funny to everybody, then I am where I want to be, and to make it funny, it had to be recognizable," he said. Still, Carvey noted there are "certain things I did not include" in the impersonation.
He went on to add that it was a "real challenge" to make the Biden impression "acceptable."
Carvey's podcast cohost David Spade also argued that it was "easier to make fun of" Biden while he was in office, as opposed to if he were a private citizen. "Once he's president, then he's more fair game," Spade said.
Carvey debuted as Biden on "SNL" opposite Maya Rudolph as Kamala Harris in September, two months after Biden exited the 2024 presidential race due to concerns about his mental fitness. He continued to play Biden on "SNL" during the lead-up to the election.

Carvey, who previously starred on "SNL" from 1986 to 1993, told Bowen he "fell in love" with his Biden impression, which took two years to perfect. The initial versions depicted him as "sweet," but the impression lacked "pop or energy," he explained. Then, Carvey added, "I heard him whisper and yell, and I thought, 'Oh, here we go.'"

Carvey also revealed that Biden's staff told him they loved the impression and even invited him to the White House for lunch, but the meeting never happened.
Carvey previously broke down his role as Biden on his "Superfly" podcast in September, saying he felt there was a lack of Biden impressions out there in comparison to impressions of Trump. "Biden is trickier," he said.

Fox News Channel's Panel Show ‘The Five' Just Made Cable News History

More Erik McGregor/LightRocket via Getty Images) Katie Pavlich couldn't resist raving at one point during Thursday's episode of The Five that the House of Representatives' passage that same day of President Trump's domestic policy bill represented a 'big, beautiful win for America.' Appropriating the same rhetorical flourish that Trump himself popularized in reference to the nearly 900-page budget reconciliation package, Pavlich then went on to poke fun at Democrats for 'throwing a hissy fit' over their legislative loss. In response to a tweet from President Biden that was put on the screen for viewers of The Five, Pavlich continued: 'Joe Biden campaigned on being a moderate and governed like a far-left lunatic, essentially, and a lot of this bill takes back a number of things that he implemented during his term.' That kind of sharp commentary, mixed with rapid-fire hot takes about the day's news from a rotating panel of hosts, is the simple formula that Fox News Channel's 5 p.m. talk show has parlayed into cable news dominance. And enough viewers keep tuning in to the show to hear panelists break down the news that it's not only become a ratings juggernaut for Fox — The Five also just made television history in the second quarter of this year: It's now the first non-primetime program ever to finish as the most-watched cable news offering for 15 consecutive quarters. The Five, Fox News' ratings giant Look even closer at the second quarter ratings data, and the trend gets even more interesting: At a time when CNN just saw its worst quarter in history in terms of viewership in the key demo, the parent network of The Five just finished its second highest-rated second quarter in history among weekday total day viewers, behind only 2020's coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic. Fox News now owns 62% of the total day cable news audience and 63% in primetime. Both CNN and MSNBC, meanwhile, not only saw double-digit declines in their audiences during the quarter, according to Nielsen data — those two networks are also set to be spun off by their respective parent companies, while The Five alone grew its viewership in the 25-54 demo 52% year-over-year. It's hard to overstate just how crucial the show has become to Fox's daily program schedule. In the second quarter, The Five also surpassed a slew of major broadcast programs, with Nielsen estimates revealing that The Five outperformed everything from the CBS Evening News to NBC's Law & Order, and CBS' NCIS: Origins — programs that boast a much larger reach in terms of broadcast households. Yet despite being available in far fewer homes as those broadcast giants reach, The Five consistently outranked them, delivering an average of 3.9 million total viewers and 410,000 viewers in the key 25-54 demo. Those numbers reveal two important facts: The Fox talk show is capturing not only traditional cable news audiences but also viewers in the younger, more sought-after demographic. And it's still doing so almost 15 years after its debut. The fact that the show has seen a steady number of guest hosts cycle on and off the panel over the years is also further evidence that the formula itself is strong enough to keep viewers coming back. Considering the fact that when The Five originally premiered in July 2011 it was as a replacement for Glenn Beck's show and only meant to run during the summer, the show's success is all the more remarkable. It quickly outperformed expectations, winning its time slot and scoring a permanent renewal just a few months after its debut. Since then, the ratings trend line for The Five has only really flowed in one direction — up and to the right.

John Cena Speaks Out on COYOTE VS. ACME Being Saved: 'I'm Glad It's Out of the Dusty Box' — GeekTyrant

For a while it looked like Coyote vs. Acme would be another casualty of WB's corporate write-offs, but after months of fans rallying and behind the scenes wrangling, the animated/live-action hybrid film is officially back on track for a theatrical release. Now, star John Cena is finally opening up about what it feels like to see the project pulled back from the brink. Speaking with ScreenRant, Cena shared how rewarding it was to see Coyote vs. Acme finally get the shot it deserves. 'Rewarding, certainly for everybody a part of the project. Anytime you put your heart and soul into something and it gets shelved, it is tough. Again, it ain't my sandbox, so I completely understand those decisions, but the fact that companies could talk together and the movie could get shown. 'We do what we do to try to entertain, and I know the audiences that were able to see Coyote vs. Acme were entertained. So hopefully that audience grows larger… I just saw it for the first time very recently. It's a bunch of fun and man, I'm glad it's out of the dusty box.' For those who've followed the story, it's been a frustrating ride. Coyote vs. Acme is a finished film from Warner Bros. that was quietly canceled last year, written off for tax purposes just like Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt . What made this one sting even more is that it was reportedly good. Test screenings scored high, and the cast, which includes Cena and SNL alum Will Forte, were proud of what they made. But none of that seemed to matter until Ketchup Entertainment stepped in, securing the film's rights with a nearly $50 million deal and giving it a second chance. Forte, who's been one of the more vocal voices on the matter, didn't mince words when discussing how it felt to watch the project be cast aside. 'My thoughts are that it's f-cking bullsh-t. It is such a delightful movie. It deserves so much better…I can't tell you possibly why the decision was made to not release it, but it makes my blood boil. I don't want people to forget what they did to us.' But now that the film is officially back, Forte's tone has shifted, at least a little. 'I never thought it would happen so it just came out of nowhere and I'm so thrilled. Thank you Ketchup Entertainment, I'm so excited for people to see this movie. I'm gonna promote the crap out of it, just tell me what you want me to do and I'll go, I'll do whatever — go to the top of Mount Everest, I'm there.' Still, even with the comeback, Forte made sure to underline the emotional toll the shelving took on the cast and crew: 'Don't let us make this thing that we fall in love with and then not show it,' he said. There's no official release date yet, but with distribution locked in and stars like Cena and Forte ready to go full Road Runner on the promo trail, it's only a matter of time before Coyote vs. Acme finally gets its moment.

Julie Bowen thought ‘Happy Gilmore 2' would recast her with a ‘younger' actress

The modern Happy Gilmore family is back. Julie Bowen is shocked that she's making her return as Virginia Venit in 'Happy Gilmore 2.' 'I didn't think they'd bring me back at all,' the actress, 55, revealed to Michael Rosenbaum on Tuesday's episode of his 'Inside of You' podcast. 9 Julie Bowen on the 'Inside of You' podcast. 'I read and they were relieved,' the 'Ed' actor recalled. 'They were visibly relieved. I go, 'What's going on?' They're like, 'Yeah, some of these girls are just so aggressively sexy.' And I was like, 'That's a bad thing?'' In September, Sandler opened up about reprising his role during a sit-down on 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.' 'We worked hard on the script, man. We didn't want to let anybody down.
