NEW DELHI: India captain
Shubman Gill
struck a sensational maiden Test double-century, and stand-in pacer Akash Deep followed it up with a fiery spell to leave England reeling at 13/2, courtesy of two wickets in two balls, on Day 2 of the second Test at Edgbaston on Thursday.
Gill's magnificent 269 formed the backbone of India's imposing first-innings total of 587. In reply, England finished the day at 77/3, trailing by a massive 510 runs.
The 25-year-old Gill, leading the side in only his second Test as captain, shattered the record for the highest score by an Indian batter in a Test match in England — surpassing Sunil Gavaskar's iconic 221 at The Oval in 1979.

(89) and Washington Sundar, forging crucial partnerships of 203 and 144 runs for the sixth and seventh wickets, respectively.
Speaking after the day's play, Jadeja lauded Gill's exceptional knock and revealed how the two discussed building a long stand in the middle.
"You didn't see how much Shubman Gill has grown? (Laughs)," Jadeja told reporters.
"Shubman scored 269 runs. He was unlucky because aaj lag nahi raha tha ki wo out hoga [it never looked like he was going to get out today]. We were actually talking about building a long partnership," he added.

Jadeja also spoke about Kuldeep Yadav, who was left out of the playing XI at Edgbaston as the team opted for additional batting depth following the loss in the opening Test at Headingley.
Tracing Moeen Ali's steps in Birmingham
"Whenever Kuldeep Yadav gets an opportunity, he'll do well — he's a wicket-taker. I spend time with him, but whenever we go out, we never discuss cricket. A player should always focus on controlling the controllables," Jadeja said.
When asked about England assistant coach Jeetan Patel's comments that the hosts still had a chance to win the second Test, Jadeja offered a cheeky response:
"Log press conference mein kuch bhi bol dete hain [People can say anything in a press conference]," he quipped.

NHL trade news: Edmonton Oilers sign veteran forward Curtis Lazar to $775K deal in 2024 free agency return

Veteran forward Curtis Lazar rejoins Edmonton (Image via: Getty Images) Veteran forward Curtis Lazar is heading back to Edmonton, this time in an NHL jersey. The Oilers have signed the 30-year-old to a one-year, $775,000 contract during the 2024 NHL free agency period, bringing the former WHL standout full circle as he returns to the city where his junior hockey journey first began. Curtis Lazar signs one-year, $775K deal to join Edmonton Oilers The Edmonton Oilers' decision to bring in Curtis Lazar is more than a feel-good reunion. It's a calculated depth move ahead of the 2024–25 NHL season. Lazar, originally drafted 17th overall by the Ottawa Senators in 2013, spent five seasons with the Edmonton Oil Kings in the WHL, winning a Memorial Cup and WHL Championship before turning pro. Now, more than a decade later, Lazar brings veteran presence, playoff experience, and two-way versatility to a team looking to maintain its Stanley Cup contention status. Known for his high work ethic and defensive responsibility, Lazar is expected to fill a fourth-line forward role under head coach Kris Knoblauch. The 2023–24 NHL season wasn't kind to Lazar. Playing for the New Jersey Devils, he battled through injuries and recorded just 2 goals and 3 assists in 48 games. However, the Oilers see upside in his ability to contribute in penalty-killing situations, win board battles, and provide leadership in the locker room. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brain tumor has left my son feeling miserable; please help! Edmonton Oilers sign Andrew Mangiapane to $7.2M deal after Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl recruitment push

Oilers land Mangiapane after McDavid, Draisaitl pitch (Image via: Getty Images) The Edmonton Oilers made one of the most talked-about moves in 2025 NHL free agency by signing forward Andrew Mangiapane to a two-year, $7.2 million contract. However, it was the Oilers who sealed the deal—thanks to their leadership group taking matters into their own hands. According to Mangiapane, both McDavid and Draisaitl personally reached out during the free agency period, which had a major impact on his decision to sign with Edmonton. 'People pulling you this way and that way and wanting you here or there. But when you have those two caliber players calling you, you tend to listen,' Mangiapane said during an appearance on Oilers Now with Bob Stauffer.
