Pixies create a 1990s time machine at MGM Music Hall at Fenway
Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up Pixies frontman Black Francis invited guests to step into a time machine set to 1990. Matthew J. Lee/Globe Staff Advertisement The galloping Western/surf chug 'Cecilia Ann' burst out of the gate, and 'Velouria' didn't roar so much as scream, while the short and sweet 'Allison' played as a beach-party rave. Joey Santiago spat out little curlicues on his guitar as bassist Emma Richardson dug a trench deep enough for 'Is She Weird' to move through, and Santiago's ringing two-note figure in 'The Happening' repeated so much that it began to sound like shattered glass. The guitars were mixed hot enough throughout to give them a visceral, tactile charge. Advertisement 'Havalina' signaled the end of 'Bossanova,' but there was no time to linger on what might have been a nearly serene comedown; 'Here comes 'Trompe le Monde,'' said Francis. (The ringed planets hanging behind the band as their only stagecraft rotated to become the giant eyeballs of that album's cover.) The warped, art-rock wallop of the title track, and the dead-eyed roar and strangled leads of 'Planet of Sound' unspooled quickly, and when manic screamer 'The Sad Punk' slowed down, it felt drunk, with the instruments wobbling against one another. Since the abrupt ending of 'Trompe le Monde' closer 'The Navajo Know' would have made for an unsatisfying sendoff, Pixies sweetened the pot, first with the dreamy and harsh spiral of 'In Heaven' and then with gimmes 'Here Comes Your Man' and 'Where Is My Mind?' plus 'Into the White,' a b-side trifle that they still played the hell out of. Pixies drummer David Lovering. Matthew J. Lee/Globe Staff The house lights came on in full during that last song and remained up for the wild 'Debaser,' where David Lovering's drums felt like they were going to spring right off the stage and the crowd exploded every time Francis spat out the lyric 'chien!' They didn't need it to be dark to imagine that it was still 1990. They were already there. Momma opened with a pitch-perfect recreation of '90s-style alt/indie that they could have thawed out from 30 years ago. Their gauzy churn might have landed them a gig at the 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer' rock club the Bronze, with a touch of Veruca Salt in their dissociated harmonies. PIXIES With Momma. Actress Kate Beckinsale announces mother's death: ‘I don't want to post this'
On Thursday, July 17, actress Kate Beckinsale took to Instagram to make a heartbreaking announcement. In the post featuring several pictures of herself and her beloved mom, Judy Loe, Beckinsale announced Loe's death. 'I don't want to post this,' Beckinsale, who is best known for her roles in 'Underworld,' 'Click,' and 'Serendipity,' began the caption of her post. 'I am only posting this because I have had to register my mother's death certificate and it will soon become public record.' Beckinsale revealed that her mom 'died the night of July 15th in my arms after immeasurable suffering.' Loe was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in July 2024. (Warning: The below links contain language some readers may find offensive.) Over the last year, Beckinsale has continued sharing moments with her mom on social media — from playing practical jokes on Loe to celebrating her 78th birthday in the hospital singing a song during treatments. On Mother's Day, Beckinsale told her mom that 'any journey you are on, I am on it with you, as you have always been with me.' 'I have not picked all the best photos, nor the best videos, because I cannot bear to go through my camera roll yet,' Beckinsale continued on Instagram. 'I deeply apologise to any of her friends who are finding out this way or through the press, but I cannot go through her phone. I am paralyzed.' Beckinsale said her mom 'was the compass of my life, the love of my life, my dearest friend. The vastness and huge heart of this tiny woman has touched so many people who love her dearly.' 'She has been brave in so many ways, forgiving sometimes too much, believing in the ultimate good in people and the world is so dim without her that it is nearly impossible to bear,' Beckinsale wrote. 'Mama, I love you so much. This has been my greatest fear since finding my father dead at five and I am here,' she concluded her statement. 'Oh my Mama. I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. I am so sorry.' On July 9, just a week before Loe's passing, Beckinsale shared an emotional video of herself in the hospital, caring for her mom . In the video, Beckinsale was seen singing to her mom. 'When my mum was 14, she was in a harmony group with her best friends Mary, Sylvia, (known as Fuzzy to this day because of an unfortunate perm decades ago) and Chris,' Beckinsale shared. 'Mary unfortunately is no longer with us but up until very recently even though they are in their now late 70s they would get together and still absolutely kill it.' 'I am a very poor substitute not being a very good singer but I want my mum's dearest and oldest friends in her hospital room with her, so Fuz and Chris, please know I'm trying to keep the Four Teens going as best as I can from a distance.'

Jason Aldean's wife provides update on son Memphis after ‘long night in the ER'
Jason Aldean's son has a good sense of humor — even in an emergency room. The 48-year-old country music star shares two children — son Memphis, 7, and daughter Navy, 6, with his wife Brittany Aldean, whom he has been married to since March 2015, according to People. On July 16, Brittany Aldean shared an update on Memphis following his recent visit to the ER. 'Memphis is doing great. Thanks to all those checking in' she wrote in an Instagram Story over a photo of Memphis wearing a sling around his left arm. The update comes one day after Brittany Aldean revealed that Memphis broke his collarbone. 'It was a long night in the ER, but Memphis is ok. He fractured his collarbone and will be in a sling for a couple of weeks,' she wrote in an Instagram Story on July 15, per Taste of Country. 'Just rest and extra lovin', he'll be healed before we know it,' she added. Brittany Aldean later shared a video of her and her husband comforting their son as he was lying down in a hospital bed. 'How [are] you feeling, buddy? Do you feel better? I hope it's not broken, but I think maybe you're probably gonna have to get a little sling,' Jason Aldean said to his son, according to Parade. He then jokes that his son should tell his friends that he was wrestling alligators when the injury happened. According to Taste of Country, Memphis joked back and started to wonder how many alligators he could take on if he was healthy. Jason Aldean also playfully suggested his son tell his friends that he was getting jumped before beating everyone up. 'I'm not going to tell them that. They're definitely not going to believe me,' he replied, per Parade. Jason Aldean sparked controversy in 2012 when he was spotted 'getting cozy' with his future wife at a bar while he was still married to his then-wife Jessica Ussery, according to Us Weekly. The former couple divorced in 2013 and Jason Aldean's relationship with Brittany Aldean was confirmed by Us Weekly the following year. Jason and Brittany Aldean tied the knot in 2015 and welcomed Memphis in December 2017 — followed by Navy in 2019. On Dec. 1, Jason Aldean took to Instagram to celebrate his son's seventh birthday. '7 years with this little guy has been a blessing. Happy birthday lil man. Hope you have the best day ever! I love you so much buddy,' he wrote in the caption alongside old and current photos of Memphis. The following month, Jason Aldean took his son for a 'boys day' trip. 'Memphis crushed his first offshore trip! Had a blast with the boys on 'the bounty.' Thanks for making it a really cool day for him,' he wrote alongside a video of the father-son duo's fishing adventure. On May 11, Brittany Aldean posted photos of her family of four in honor of Mother's Day. 'It's the most challenging yet rewarding job in the world,' she wrote of motherhood in the caption. 'I hope everyone feels appreciated today and always.' As for Jason Aldean — he left a heartfelt message in the comment section. 'Happy Mother's Day babe. You are an AMAZING mama and we all love you so much,' he wrote.
