MUSCAT: The Oman Football Association (OFA) has officially appointed Portuguese veteran Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the national team.
Queiroz, a globally respected name in football coaching, brings decades of international experience to the Sultanate of Oman. He replaces Rasheed Jaber and is expected to lead the team through its next phase of competitive development. Hamad al Azzani will assist the new coach.
Born in Mozambique, Queiroz has held prestigious coaching roles throughout his career. He served as head coach for national teams including Portugal, South Africa, Iran and Colombia. His most notable international tenure was with Iran, where he made history as the country's longest-serving manager and the only one to guide them to two consecutive Fifa World Cups — in 2014 and 2018.
On the club level, Queiroz also boasts an impressive résumé. He had a stint as head coach of Real Madrid and worked closely with legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson as assistant coach at Manchester United. His partnership with Ferguson coincided with one of the club's most successful periods.
The Oman Football Association's decision to sign Queiroz is seen as a bold move to elevate the national team's profile and performance on the international stage. In a statement posted on X, OFA thanked Jaber for his work as head coach of the national team and wished him the best.
