Cubs acquire former All-Star starting pitcher Michael Soroka from Nationals

The Cubs are the latest team to shore up their pitching staff.
Chicago made a move to acquire starter Michael Soroka from the Nationals on Wednesday night, less than 24 hours before the MLB trade deadline, The Post's Jon Heyman confirmed.
The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal first reported the deal.

The soon-to-be 28-year-old is a former All-Star and was a coveted arm at the deadline.
Soroka hasn't had a great season in 2025, but there's plenty of reason to like what he brings to a team as a likely backend starter for Chicago, which sits in second in the NL Central at 63-45.

Soroka has posted a 4.87 ERA across 16 starts this season, but his advanced metrics suggest that he has pitched better than those numbers illustrate.
His expected ERA, which estimates ERA based on the quality of contact allowed rather than simply the outcome, is in the 75th percentile this season, according to Baseball Savant. The expected batting average of hitters he faces ranks even better, sitting in the 84th percentile.
His strikeout rate, walk rate and barrel rate all sit in the 69th percentile or better.

Soroka just now finding a groove for the first time in several years, as he's struggled with injuries. He suffered two Achilles tears and a forearm injury in recent years.
His move to Chicago this trade deadline is actually a return of sorts, as he spent 2024 with the White Sox on the South Side of the Windy City. He pitched to a 4.74 ERA and a 0-10 record on nine starts and 25 total appearances for the White Sox.

Before his injuries, Soroka's career was blossoming in Atlanta, as he made the All-Star Game in his second year and was top-6 in Cy Young voting with his 2.68 ERA.

In return for Soroka, the Cubs sent their No. 13 and 14 prospects to Washington, infielder Ronny Cruz and outfielder Christian Franklin, according to Heyman.
The 18-year-old Cruz was drafted in the third round in 2024 and primarily plays shortstop. He hit .270 with a .745 OPS across nearly 200 plate appearances in rookie ball.
Franklin was a fourth-round pick in 2021 out of Arkansas and is hitting .265 with an .820 OPS across 321 at-bats in Triple-A this season.

Chicago Bears will honor late Virginia Halas McCaskey, Steve McMichael on uniforms during 2025 season

The Chicago Bears lost two franchise icons earlier this year. The organization will be paying tribute to both of them on the field this season. The Bears will honor the late Virginia Halas McCaskey with a jersey patch and the late Steve McMichael with a helmet decal. McCaskey, formerly the owner and matriarch of the Bears, died on Feb. 2. She was 102. Her initials are at the front and center of a football-shaped patch that's stitched onto the left breastplate of the Bears' 2025 jerseys. The football is orange, and McCaskey's initials are navy blue. The patch is strikingly similar to the one Chicago used during the 1983 season to commemorate McCaskey's father, George Halas, who founded, owned, coached and played for the Bears over the course of a Pro Football Hall of Fame career. "We thought it would be appropriate if her patch mirrored her dad's from 1983," George McCaskey, son of Virginia and current Bears owner, told the team's website. "So it's the same size, the same color combination. The only thing that's different, of course, is the initials. We thought that was the right thing to do." The "VMH" patch will make its debut on Aug. 10 when the Bears kick off preseason action at home against the Miami Dolphins. Also in honor of McCaskey, Chicago won't wear alternate or throwback uniforms this season. Per the team website, the Bears will wear navy jerseys and white pants at home and white jerseys and navy pants on the road. Players will be outfitted with the franchise's famous navy helmets for every game. On the back of each of those helmets will lie a football-shaped decal, with McMichael's No. 76 featured under the laces. That same logo will be painted on the grass of Soldier Field for every Bears home game this season. McMichael, a Hall of Fame defensive tackle who played for the organization from 1981-93, died at 67 years old on April 23 after battling ALS. McMichael was part of the 1985 Bears, who went 15-1 before winning Super Bowl XX. The decal logo will also be painted on the grass at Soldier Field for every Bears home game. Even though the 2025 season marks a new era for the franchise, with George McCaskey taking over as owner and Ben Johnson taking over as head coach, the Bears are faithfully remembering their past, too.

Cubs chairman says team's performance convinced him extending Hoyer's contract was right thing to do

Associated Press CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts came into the season thinking about extending president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer's contract. The team's performance convinced him it was the right thing to do. 'We went into the season thinking about an extension,' Ricketts said Friday. "I think the team was playing well enough that Jed had really proven he put a good ballclub on the field. I've always been comfortable with Jed. He makes good baseball decisions, and he's really built a good organization.' The Cubs agreed to a multiyear extension with the 51-year-old Hoyer on Monday. His contract was set to expire at the end of this season, his 14th with the Cubs. Hoyer was hired as general manager in 2011 and replaced Theo Epstein as president of baseball operations following the 2020 season. Led by breakout All-Star Pete Crow-Armstrong, Chicago was second in the NL Central and a game behind Milwaukee at 63-45 entering Friday's matchup against the Baltimore Orioles. It lost two of three at Milwaukee this week. The Cubs added depth to their lineup and pitching staff before the trade deadline. They acquired utility player Willi Castro from the rebuilding Minnesota Twins and veteran left-hander Taylor Rogers from the Pittsburgh Pirates. They also got right-handers Michael Soroka from the Washington Nationals and Andrew Kittredge from Baltimore. 'I think the way he's methodically gone about developing the right players and bringing them up, looking for the right guys to add, being thoughtful about who he signs," Ricketts said. 'I think all those things have added up. He's had a good first four years. And then of course going into this season, when we got off to a great start, that just spoke to his decision-making and his judgment, and so we were confident a few weeks ago that an extension was the right thing to do.' ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 2
